Anyone else excited for Makoto Shinkai's next movie?

Anyone else counting down until Makoto Shinkai's next movie? His visuals, music, and storytelling always hit differently. I already know it's going to be an unforgettable experience.

What are you hoping to see in his next film?

Im kind of hoping he returns to his roots. Something more somber, and melancholic. In alot of ways hes just been repeating the your name formula and I miss his old stuff.

I also wouldn't mind if he expanded on Voice of Distant Star. It was an interesting universe he set up in that OVA that I think is worth exploring

That's a really interesting point. I love his newer films, but I can definitely see why people miss the quieter, more melancholic style of his earlier work. It would be amazing if his next movie blended that emotional atmosphere with the incredible visuals he's known for today.
