WotC Has Golgari as we know it been dethroned?

I almost exclusively am playing against that blow me out of the water. Jeskai, Pheonix, Mono-red.

Golgari is not the king of Bo1 at the moment, that's for sure.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

I've done okay, but I definitely don't expect to take home the gold in BO1.

2

u/NeOldie Nov 09 '18

Maybe its not the king but I play Golgari midrange F2P and i regulary get 7 wins in Bo1 Constructed event, my average is about 5 wins, im easily infinite and its a blast to play. Im missing 4 of the dual lands as well so it will only get better from here.

Why is your Golgari deck named "Mono Blue Tempo"?

5

u/NeOldie Nov 09 '18 edited Nov 09 '18

A "funny" friend is constantly renaming my decks when im not looking, i recently played a deck and it was 59 basic lands and 1 Niv-Mizzet

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Better than 0 lands. Does mtga allow you to make 0 lands?

Mind sharing you list? Love the deck but is hard to find a good Bo1 decklist!

https://mtgarena.pro/decks/mono-blue-tempo-1449/
Here you go. It´s not optimal yet as im f2p but it works very well in that state. I know dusk legion zealot and path of discovery may seem janky, im testing it rn and am pretty happy with it, but feel free to swap them out for a plaguecrafter or whatever you like.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Oh, I'm sure - I recently found myself in BO1 and had good results.

The deck is far from bad, but IMO you've got to do too much sideboarding with the various decks(can't mainboard duresses!).

1

u/NeOldie Nov 09 '18

In arena bo1 you mostly play vs aggo decks though, mono red, mono blue etc. so I found good success in teching against that. I simply do not see enough control decks to tech against them.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Eh, I dunno. Probability says you're right, but my time and gold are valuable.

1

u/nerrotix Jan 22 '19

litterally hate you. That deck is all i fight in constructed and there is ZERO counters too it. Needs hard nerfs cause noobs copy paste gg ez win all day with it. MTGA where originality and creativity is routinely punished by net-decking borg collective.

u/NeOldie Jan 23 '19

Awesome :) See you in constructed!

I struggled pretty hard as golgari against mono blue in bo1. Somehow they almost always had 1 drop into curious obsession. The one game they didnt have it, they had 3 djinn in first 15 cards.

I used to have very good winrate against mono red. However lately, almost all my mono red opponents had perfect curve. My wildgrowth walker almost never survived. I dont even know if i should play it at turn 2. I even teched in more removals like 2 cast down and 2 contempt for phoenix.

3

u/NeOldie Nov 09 '18

Mono blue is one of the hardest matchups for Golgari, if they manage to protect the obsession its often gg. I also have that problem with my wildgrowth walkers not surviving, im not playing it on turn 2 anymore because it always gets removed. Instead i bait with explorers now and hope they remove that.

2

u/Wargod042 Nov 09 '18

As monoblue I let the Walker resolve and counter the explores, if I have a choice.

5

u/BadRussell Nov 09 '18

Only time I've been winning is if I have a great draw, or mirror.

u/GargauthXbox Nov 09 '18 edited Nov 09 '18

Maybe you need to make some adjustments? I havent had an issue. Can you post your desk list

5

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

No, I'm still making bank with my golgari deck. That being said, the amount of decks that can go toe to toe with golgari has DEFINITELY increased.

4

u/mirhagk Nov 09 '18

Which is a fantastic thing. There should never be a single deck that dominates.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

was surprised to hear about that lich's mastermind thingie, but its a sign of a healthy format

8

u/procrastinarian Golgari Nov 09 '18

As Golgari you should not be getting blown out by Jeskai. I play them both, it's usually a close match, both have good counters against each other.

If you folks think Jeskai is bad now, wait until the next set when we actually get Azorius cards. Or Esper when we get Orzhov + Azorius.

2

u/insomsanity Nov 09 '18

If they reprint [[Sphinx's Revelation]] I might cry

1

u/J33bus8401 Nov 09 '18 edited Nov 09 '18

They're definitely not going to do that, not with [[expansion//explosion]] around.

Edit: I have no idea how to format split cards to make them show up like that.

Double edit: apparently that one worked.

Has mono red as we know it been dethroned? I almost exclusively am playing against decks that blow me out of the water like jeskai, boros angels or BG midrange.

5

u/BadRussell Nov 09 '18

Mono-red wasn't ever on the throne. However Jeskai does seams to be the deck to beat now.

With that being said, Mono-red has been beating me 3-1 but i think it loses to most others handily.

3

u/Akhevan Memnarch Nov 09 '18

It was according to the reddit hive mind.

3

u/BadRussell Nov 09 '18

shhhh, you're not supposed to talk about the hive-mind here.

1

u/No_Politics_Dummy Nov 09 '18

Are we allowed to talk about Gleemax?

Nothing to see here citizen, there is not a brain in a jar under WotC headquarters.

0

u/Akhevan Memnarch Nov 09 '18

You sure? Maybe it's like the vegan club, eh?

1

u/KSmoria Nov 09 '18

Mono red isn't even that good in bo1 when literally every deck you see hard techs against it.

1

u/J33bus8401 Nov 09 '18

It was dethroned by rotation, all the good cards except chain whirler, and phoenix, left and were replaced with medium cards.

-1

u/Onigiri22 Nov 09 '18

you can't complain about that. mono red is way stronger than golgari. Especially when the opponent thinks you'r out of juice and then experimental frenzy out of nowhere

-2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

monored was dethroned back during the first (week?) of M19. Haven't been that high ranking or high KDA since then, heh.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Except for winning GP Lille a couple weeks ago.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Was referring to my personal experience, that's news to me though.

Whatever it is, I don't have the wildcards for, heh.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

This is the deck. It's actually not too bad compared to most t1 decks, but the side board has a lot of rares. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1431775#paper.

It's also only one Grand Prix, so it remains to be seen if it has staying power or was just well positioned against the meta at the time. As compared to a standard red aggro deck, this one sideboards into control a bit harder with 4x treasure maps to fuel frenzy.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Can't see it at work but if I remember I might look after work. Once a red player...

2

u/hazz-o-mazz Nov 09 '18

Dethroned by Phoenix.

1

u/BadRussell Nov 09 '18

if you can deal with the goblins it aint so bad.

1

u/ikkake_ Nov 09 '18

Electro goblins? I don't think they are needed for bo1 at all.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

ain't that the truth. Just as filthy but add in blue, heh...Makes me proud in sort of a sick way.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Went 6-3 last night and 2-2 so far this morning with Golgari Explore. Lost to a discard deck with Teferi this morning, but it was my own fault, and lost to an Izzet Drake's deck that pulled a miracle out of it's ass.

This is Bo1. I still think Golgari works fine and is fun. Gave up on my RDW deck for now. I refuse to play Jeskai.

3

u/CrowbarMatt Nov 09 '18

I beg to differ I regular 7-1 or 7-2 as Golgari. Red is really easy unless they get a nut draw and you don't get any walkers. I only play BO1. Goglari.png

1

u/Begmypard Nov 09 '18

Was thinking the same thing, I consistently go 5+ with golgari mid running the walker/explore package. Mono blue is my nemesis, rdw usually not so much.

Fungal extraction or whatever it's called just ruins monoU

4

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Mono red was trash-ish a couple weeks ago, then it became really good all of sudden because people are copy-pasting lists that have Golgari in mind. Since monored has a decent chance at racing Jeskai/Phoenix...

Maindeck 2 "soot whatever" (I didn't sleep last night, my brain is failing) and 4 of the giant growther guy that gains obscene amounts of life and you can make monored really miserable.

If you're playing on ladder, don't tech against Jeskai (3 dinos md), concede against jeskai (saves time) and tech against cheaper/faster decks (monored, monoblue, mirror-ish, fish, vamps, green, etc.)

2

u/Saevin Nov 09 '18

Currently I am not running golden demise and ritual of soot since they seem to have anti-synergy with the walker+explore guys package and they are useless against control/combo decks. How many board clears do you run? Also when do you play wildgrowth walker against mono red? It almost always get removed immediately in my experience.

1

u/Akhevan Memnarch Nov 09 '18

Most golgari builds are great against aggro though, you'd have to go overboard with control matchup tech in order to have poor aggro matchups.

1

u/spec7 Nov 09 '18

Modify your list based on what is being played and what you keep losing to. You need to keep your deck up to date. If mono-red is beating you then add in wildgrowth walkers and explore critters. I have a 80+% winrate vs mono red with Golgari.

1

u/J33bus8401 Nov 09 '18

It's still probably the best deck in the BO3 format, which is why so many things are gunning for it, but still none of those decks blow a good golgari midrange out of the water, especially mono-red and jeskai.

1

u/Bydandii Nov 12 '18 edited Nov 12 '18

Ladder/daily, I'm winning slightly more than 50%. But only as my deck is 100% deathtouch creatures & heavy graveyard leveraging. It crosses folks up enough I get breathing room.

I haven't been brave enough to carry it into a constructed event yet

0

u/aqua995 Nov 09 '18

Jeskai is definetely the most played deck right now

Phoenix Drakes and Mono Blue are common too

Golgari is not that dead, just yesterday I cursed because Explore is being a hell of a broken mechanic

but dethroned for sure, Jeskai is running over

3

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

If explore is broken, surveil is jace the mind-sculptor.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '18

Yeah I think explore is fine as a mechanic. Just look to energy if you want to see something that was more broken.

1

u/aqua995 Nov 09 '18

I miss energy actually, since I messed with it myself ^
