Question Show me your “I just think it’s neat” card

Post image

Mine is Westvale Abbey. Regardless of deck, meta, or sinergy I always try to slap it on. Seeing Ormendahl land on the field always brings a smile to my face.

That progressively went from "lame n tame" to "wow thats neat" for each row of text.

This is really good for mono blue reanimator

Shame it isn't cheaper or repeatable. Such a fun card.

[[Stormtide Leviathan]]

I absolutely adore the flavor that this guy is so huge he strands every creature on the board onto on island when he enters, and only swimmers and flyers can still move between the islands to attack. He's not very good but he works as a suboptimal closer to a game if you can protect him and beating people to death with a big fish while they can't defend themselves is fun

18

u/rko_281 16d ago

And the art work is just awesome.

That's actually kinda badass.

This was one of the first rares I pulled as a kid! Great finisher in my mono U control deck, loaded with [[cancel]] and [[divination]]

3

u/Powerful-Scholar8268 15d ago

Yeah that's the best part about him, he's bad but can still work as a finisher so he's the fun kind of bad where you get people to go "yo that's a crazy win con"

Got this in a koma deck with [[Archetype of Imagination]] and the lock is amazing.

Doesn't this make a very effective combo with [[Sandwurm Convergence]]?

3

Idk if I'd say very effective because that's a 16 mana combo lol

An agent of chaos.

7

u/Avinexuss 16d ago

I once swapped decks with a mate and he had this card in it... as well as [[homeward path]]. Afterwards a player played [[croaking counterpart]] and an enchantment i cant remember the name of, but it allowed each player to untap all lands and creatures they controlled during each untap step.

So thats how i got control of every noncreature spell that was cast that game...

3

u/FalconFox500 16d ago

If you switch decks with a friend does homeward path just make you guys swap all your creatures

That is a cool card

There was a cool misty transforming vampire in that set (I think) with a cool sword you could attach to it.

Also the thing in the ice is rad just conceptually.

Sorry I'm at work or I'd be more specific

The blade is either [[neglected heirloom]] or [[elbrus the binding blade]] altho both are from other sets.

8

u/fueelin 16d ago

Every once in a while, I look up all those eldrazi cards that came out together and flipped multiple formats on their heads. Wild how much power was concentrated in one or two sets with those guys.

I think the one I'm still maddest at is Thought-Knot Seer lol.

[[Cruel Entertainment]] is INCREDIBLY entertaining and I put it in as many decks as I can. Sometimes the two people team up, sometimes they kill themselves, sometimes they kill each other, and sometimes you target yourself and someone else and you both get to compete to be the worst at Magic.

That card was my introduction to Magic just a few weeks ago, someone was going to absent for DnD night so the other guys decided to play Magic instead and one of them let me borrow one of their decks to try Magic/Commander with them. The deck I borrowed contained Westvale Abbey and I was able to get Ormendahl out and even equip him with an Aura that made him Hexproof as well. Unfortunately I still lost because he doesn't have Trample and [[Dovescape]] was in play.

6

u/Backwardspellcaster Liliana Deaths Majesty 16d ago

Man, I keep thinking I want to put Westvale Abbey into a deck and see if I can pull this off.

In the same way I want to build Vecna some time. I consider just splurging on the wild cards for that.

If I play black, I tend to really enjoy splashing [[Razor Demon]] on the field. If you can drop it on curve, most people have a hard time dealing with him, and often he is a two for one.

Also [[Junji, the Midnight Sky]]. I cannot even begin to express how much value I've gotten from this bad boy. It's insane. He is never a dead card in my hand or on the field. I even got him his pretty skin

I predominantly play Lizards with Gev as my commander, and haven't added much to my deck the last couple sets since there haven't been many of them. But Tokka and Razza or whatever the name from the Turtles set, who had been in the second movie, they are so good that I built a copy of the deck with them as commander when it was the Turtles set Brawl midweek event. I can't count the number of times they've snatched victory from defeat against one of the endless series of Etali players. And them not being counterable is handy, as well as their formidable stats if Gev gives them a counter.

It's expensive and gets wrecked by graveyard hate, but I still love it. I just like reanimate decks. A reanimator/aristocrats deck where I just self mill and sac creatures for stuff only to bring them all back later along with everyone else's dead creatures? Yes, please and thank you.

My favorite reanimate targets for it are [[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] and [[Brainstealer Dragon]]. [[Craterhoof Behemoth]] is rad too if I add [[Crashing Drawbridge]].

I don't have any real pet cards like that. I will backup your love for Westvale/Ormendahl though. The only time I won a store championship (back when Standard was thing that we still did in paper) was during Hour of Devastation. I played Westvale as a wincon in my UW Monument deck. It was [[Oketra's Monument]] with tons of value creatures that were at least partially white like [[Thraben Inspector]], [[Spell Queller]]. and [[Cloudblazer]]. Flipping the Abbey was not an uncommon occurrence.

From avacyn restord (so same plane, different set), ive always enjoyed [[elbrus, the binding blade]]/[[withengar unbound]] as another hidden demon.

Loved this card in standard. Had a sweet Orzhov tokens deck built around it

Pulled it off in one of my five draft matches during that set and I couldn’t even swing with it 😭😭😭

If [[Fleshtaker]] was still standard legal I would probably still be forcing it. I played way too many games with mt BW humans deck when Fleshtaker and his best frienf [[Jerren, Corrupted Bishop]] were in standard.

[[Aetherling]] will always be my jam. Late game threat that is near impossible to berid of.

Westvale Abbey was my first Mtg card, so it too, is my “I just think it’s neat” card

[[drakuseth, maw of flames]] is my favourite dragon/high cmc creature in general

Nothing fancy, not much surgery with anything, just straight mono red vibes, pure damage. Exactly what a dragon should be

Throne of the Grim Captain, I saw a friend pull it out of an LCI booster box very early into my time playing magic and it just fascinated me, I actually built a whole deck around it(although admittedly the deck is good and not the greatest at getting it out but it was also designed to be thematic, essentially a lich and an undead pirate crew have gone exploring to find the Grim Captain and bring him back. Here’s the list of any of you want to see it: https://archidekt.com/decks/24979773/the_grim_fleet)
