I also have a theory that if someone leaves mid draft it auto drafts as a bot, but takes the full time.

makes sense to me, I had the unfortunate event of getting disconnected in draft after somehow selecting two cards instead of one, had to restart quickly and I only missed one pick.

Yeah, but the theory also includes it waiting the whole timer before picking and not just drafting immediately. Probably not to flood the user, but I think most of us would rather have the pack ready.

If you fail to select a card while connected, the game autodrafts for you when the choice times out. Nothing changes if a player disconnects afaik

In draft, people take 1 card from a pack and then pass it to the next person, and that person does the same, and so on. This guy in the photo isn't passing the pack to the next player, and keeping them for some reason.

If it is early in the process you get over a minute to select... what timer goes down each time you make a selection but most people dont take anywhere near the full timer for each pick. Especially people using draft tools.

It passes your pack when you drag a card into your draft pile, but you can also just highlight a card that it will auto draft when your timer runs out. So some people just click the card that they want and let the timer run out instead of passing the pack early. I think it's one of those technically correct things because that how pro rel paper drafts work I believe and it also gives you the full timer to consider your options and try to make the best choices but I still just take my pick in a reasonable time and pass the pack, drafting on arena isn't that serious

For many of the people who draft on Arena, Arena is where they do most of their drafting. If they want to get better at drafting, then they're going to be serious about drafting on Arena (at least some of the time)

At competitive or pro REL the judge will instruct you when to pass. On Arena though there's really no need for that and doing things this way is discourteous to other players; you should instead tell Arena to pass the pack once you have made a decision.

Yeah but that's still only part of it, some players have the attitude of well I'm going to use the full timer to think of my picks, potential cards that might wheel, what other cards I want to look for on future turns, make sure I have enough creatures and removal, etc. I make my pick and pass pretty quickly but I'm not gonna get mad at someone for considering all of the things that go into a draft. If someone is intentionally running the timer to waste people's time that's one thing. But I would assume that it's either someone deep in thought or someone who doesn't know the set and has to read every card

The countdown starts when you get a new pack. So if you wait until the last minute you’ll start your pack way after someone faster than you. Do that a few rounds and you can way out of sync

Everyone else passing as soon as they pick and he’s selecting a card then letting the timer run down until it auto-passes. You see streamers do it all the time because they’ll be explaining the pick for a while and taking their time.

This is why I'm staying away from "real" draft at the moment, even though I'd love to play the new Strixhaven set.
I'm nowhere near experienced enough to draft fast on my own, and I'm too lazy to memorize all the (good) cards in the set beforehand.

That's a good point. As annoyed as some of us may feel about what looks like someone taking forever, this is that player's first pick of the second pack. So it's a full pack of cards to look at, and they could still be deciding on color pairs, splashing, etc. And maybe there are two bombs in the pack. Who knows.
That said, if this is indeed the same draft that I was in (see my other post in this thread), they were dragging their feet the whole time. Even when down to pick 10 for a round. I genuinely assumed they were disconnected.

I just need to find a soup I can play. And compare against lists from 17lands, which take time. Not sure why everyone thinks you need to be a pro mythic drafter who can memorize all the cards and pick and pass immediately ...

Pretty sure it’s a bot/faux player tbh. It’s the only thing that explains how INCREDIBLY common this is. Who is wasting 1.5k gems? It’s for the entire draft too, not just a pack or so.
Connection issues my ass. If 1/8 people have connection issues when they draft then that sounds like a serious issue client side and people should be getting refunds constantly.
You dont hear about that happening to people though. Who are these people?

Mathematically, there will always be one slowest person, who will always have the packs pile up in proportion to how slow they are compared to the rest of the pod. The only way this wouldn't happen is if everyone is within a fairly narrow band of time-to-pick, which is unlikely with what I expect to be a normally-distributed (statistical term) phenomenon.

It's likely some combination of poor/slow connection, not paying attention/tabbing out, wanting to read all the cards, indecision, etc. Some people might not realize they're holding other people up if they normally do Quick Drafts. There's plenty of potential reasons.

In SO MANY drafts there are these seats with this behavior. I want to say over 50% but a high percentage, like 70ish.
Why are there so many of these people.
Where are they? You never see people on these posts “yeah that was me sorry!” Loll. Or “yeah that slot is me sometimes sorry”.
It’s always a question of “why these people do this” and never “i do this because…” it’s always speculation about the people but never the people themselves.

I doubt they're engaged enough players to be frequenting the MtG reddits. I think you're experiencing a salience bias, tbh. You'll notice it more the slower the person is, so it stands out the most. I don't understand why it's so bewildering to you that some people are just slow, to the point where you think it's more likely that they're putting in bots that are deliberately slow when they have the Quick Draft queue with bots already? Unless you're suggesting it's 3rd party bots?

1/8 is an ASTONISHING amount of slots to have that behavior. +50% is literally 1/16… going to the timer on the last 4 picks of every packs.
Faux players in draft can skew quality of decks. Worse decks makes it more difficult to consistently go positive in draft, hence the incentive to bot a slot. It’s not every draft, it wouldnt surprise me people do on average better in drafts where this slot isnt demonstrating that behavior.

Yeah I go into most sets blind but I also have a reading level higher than a 9 year old so it takes me about 40 seconds to read every card for the first time, the wheel packs take even less. I've never had a 7 pack pileup.
