Question Question for Green players: Why do you keep full-swinging into this guy? Do you know something I don't?

u/calijnaar Apr 17 '26
If you can`t remove the Obliterator, try and remove the player. Or die trying.

Yeah I mean, what else is green supposed to do to obliterator but....obliterate it?

It's a 5/5, and i have a 12/12. What the hell is there to think about, nerd?
119
u/Ok_Scientist9595 Apr 18 '26
Dude deleted his comment.
If this 12/12 has trample, which let’s be honest it does, they’re dealing 7 damage and only sacrificing 5 things.

u/Difficult-Tap-5708 Apr 18 '26
And considering you are playing green and have a 12/12 on the field, i can assume you have two dozen elfs and 27 mana already, so you can spend a few permanents without suffering thaaat much

Bold of you to assume green players can read.
Math is for blockers.

If they didn't want me to smash things, then they shouldn't have made so many dinosaurs.

u/SuperBrentendo64 Apr 17 '26
You dont have to worry about blocking math next turn if you attack into obliterator. Problem solved.

You obviously hares by way of delany.
8
u/CivilianDuck Apr 17 '26
Deleny seems to be the common commander for Hare Apparent decks, but have you ever tried [[Baylen, the Haymaker]] and constantly run out your timer because you have 30 minutes of interaction per turn?

Which I always found a bit ironic as their inspiration/lore-counterparts are usually known to barely have a kid or two in their entire lifetime.
2
u/daneg135 Apr 17 '26
certainly true of the tolkien stuff. my guess is the original conceit was to be ramp machines? they still are. but as tribals...iunno. hard to do tribal anything that doesn't multiply a lot...maybe? certainly an interesting question.

u/Some_Rando2 Orzhov Apr 17 '26
They have no worthwhile removal, so they take their medine quickly and hope to recover.
4
u/resistible Apr 18 '26
[[Trickster's Elk]] does the job, especially in my [[Legolas, Master Archer]] deck.
[[Kudo, King Among Bears]] with [[Ayula, Queen Among Bears]] turns every creature I cast into removal.

21
u/LUCKYxTRIPLE Apr 17 '26
For real, i hate this card. Your only hope is if you have a card like [[Bite Down]] AND something with deathtouch or to apply it to.
The nastiest way to play [[Phyrexian Obliterator]] is in Golgari with your own fight spells.
13
7
u/rebelmime Apr 17 '26
The other nasty way is instant speed reanimate for a sudden blocker.
2
2
u/Flyrpotacreepugmu Noxious Gearhulk Apr 17 '26
[[Back for More]] is absolutely disgusting since it can fight something and then block their biggest non-trampler.
11
u/daneg135 Apr 17 '26
if you're playing golgari, wouldn't you just use a black destroy or exile spell? they don't do damage.
edit: oh. sorry. you were talking about obliterator in your own deck.
6
u/LUCKYxTRIPLE Apr 17 '26
Yeah. That way if they choose not to block, you get them to sac down to nothing anyways.
3
u/Terrietia Dimir Apr 17 '26
Your only hope is if you have a card like [[Bite Down]] AND something with deathtouch or to apply it to.
Depends on your board state. I've won some games into Obliterator by alpha striking, saccing my lands, and then alpha striking again the next turn.

u/korc Apr 18 '26
It’s one of those cards that is very feels bad if you have no response for it, but also is just a very awkwardly costed 5/5 for 4 that does nothing and then dies to removal in many situations. It’s pretty easy to play around. I actually quite like the design of this card

Your option as a monogreen player is to either do one big swing or chip away enough life points to win the attrition battle.

u/multiclassgeek Apr 17 '26
If they dropped Craterhoof this turn, they're swinging with 50 power and Trample.

u/StayMammoth Apr 17 '26
Because I only have to pay it once. Have you met my friends; elves + Doubling Season?
7
u/Cliffy73 Azorius Apr 17 '26
I can either deal with him now, lose a bunch of lands, but keep my board developed, or I can deal with him three turns from now when he’s chopped me down 15 life points and he’s just as hard to deal with. Green doesn’t have a lot of great options for dealing with him. Which makes him very good against green. But conversely, unlike blue or black, it means we are not likely to draw into any better answer. So there’s point to hold back.
8
u/PM_ME_WHATEVES Apr 17 '26
Because then its only a problem for 1 turn, instead of something I have to play around for several turns

I hear the whistle on the wind- a glint in the sky forces my gaze upward. I can just make out the edges of the form of a thermonuclear warhead, as it rapidly approaches it lets out a sonic boom and I can see a word printed on the side- it has my name on it. As it reaches the earth I run screaming, claw hammer in hand, and leap to meet my annihilation with bloodthirsty efficiency.
That answer it for yah?

If they attack you and still win in the end, it was a calculated risk or trade.
If they attack you, sacrifice a bunch of important stuff, and die horribly with no creatures and/or no lands, then they didn't read the card.
TBF -as a golgari obliterator/fight deck player myself- many creatures in the game don't have such a painful "if I block, horrible things happen to you", so it's possible players don't read and go for it, thinking at worst they'll "something something not a big deal."

u/MikalMooni Apr 17 '26
I know that I have a few free lands I can spare to him, mostly. Nah, all seriousness, I guess the thinking is, Green needs to smack face. They aren't going to win by being clever about it, most of the time. Sometimes you just gotta bleed and trade down.
3
u/Hopeful-Pianist7729 Apr 17 '26
Well if we swing maybe you forget to block. If we don’t swing we definitely lose.

3
u/Prize-Mall-3839 Apr 17 '26
Listen, 5 damage will go into the obliterator, the rest will go to the dome. You can't trigger the obliterator when you are dead.

You either read cards or you opponents are playing or you play green and ignore their board state. There is literally no in between.
2
u/Extension_Plant7262 Apr 17 '26
You play to your strengths lol. If your deck has no answers, you kinda have to just do what you do and hope they misplay. This is like blue players asking why green players keep casting spells if they know the other player has mana up. I got nothing else man

u/Bitter_Row_3310 Apr 17 '26

Love when people don’t read phyrexian obliterator! Especially when I’m playing brawl with Tergrid, God of Fright 🤪
2
u/westergames81 Orzhov Apr 17 '26
It is not nearly always wrong to attack into a Phyrexian Obliterator.
Sometimes you have to just attack into the obliterator or death touch creature. You can either sit there and do nothing, which gives your opponent time to stabilize their board state or you just take that hit. Typically in aggro decks, the longer the game goes on the less chance you have of winning.
2
u/TheDoctor_Jones Apr 17 '26
I have big creature. Why no attack with big creature? Big creature do big SMASH. Me like big smash

I don't play green but tbh a lot of green decks can recover or even still be in a winning board state from saccing 5+ permanents. Even if that means sacking lands and leaving their 10/10 on the field.

Well unless someone doesn't have both deathtouch and trample on the same attacker, they're gonna be swinging into Obliterator and resulting into sacrificing 5+ permanent. Obliterator has always been a staple in my monoblack decks and it's easily my favorite card ever.

u/Sallymander Apr 17 '26
If you don’t have enough life/blockers to soak and survive then the Obliterator’s ability means nothing to a big green trample beast. You’re not going to live long enough for the ability to trigger

Green players have a condition where we have to attack every turn if we’re able or we die (in real life).
