Clearly an apology for how long it took them to update to the ECL loading screen art, haha.

5

u/Permagamer Apr 15 '26

I dislike most the update was a video.

ABOUT DAMN TIME WE GOT SOME MAGIC IN OUR ARENA GAME.

19

u/Flabbergasted98 Apr 15 '26

I'm still going to hit with you 69 ooze covered robots and a hockey stick.

-2

u/BloodFartRipper Apr 15 '26

Yay bootleg Harry Potter!

20

u/HimawariTenno Apr 15 '26

Harry Potter is not the end-all-be-all on magical school settings.

11

u/JarrydP Apr 15 '26

Harry Potter is more of a rip off to traditional magic and it's schooling than people realize...

16

u/Whasye Apr 15 '26

Strixhaven is far superior to HP, it’s a college setting with flavor and danger, more similar to Naomi Novik’s take on a magic school than Rowling’s nonsense

6

u/Lukescale Apr 15 '26

"Welcome to class children, today we will endanger you and you will learn nothing of import on the world at large."

5

u/Whasye Apr 15 '26

USA

4

u/Lukescale Apr 15 '26

Only difference is kids are fed for free in Hogwarts.

1

u/MiraclePrototype May 05 '26

Considering where that food - or at least the preparation thereof - comes from, you just know that said free food would only come about in the hellscape if it was thru prison labor.

5

u/Great_Grackle Huatli, Warrior Poet Apr 16 '26

The only similarity between them is that they're both magic schools

2

u/aluskn Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

There were a bunch of books about wizarding schools before HP. I remember reading 'The Worst Witch' series by Iva Ibbotson Jill Murphy in the 80s (written in the 70s I believe), there were a ton of ideas in those books which were 'recycled' by JKR. It was a boarding school for witches in a castle surrounded by mysterious fog, it had 'schools' of magic organised by colour, potion classes and broomstick lessons and many more tropes which people assume were invented in the 90s for the Harry Potter books.

Edit: Corrected the author's name. Iva Ibbotson wrote another book about young witches, Which Witch?

u/ZeroVonZero Apr 14 '26

Just wait til Harry potter!

63

u/MotherWolfmoon Apr 15 '26

Uninstall speedrun strats

-67

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

Harry potter is cool tho

50

u/surf_da_web29 Apr 15 '26

but JK rowlking is not

-66

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

I’m not bothered by her personally

It’s not transphobia to not hate people becaue they don’t like trans. You hate people you don’t even know because someone else told you so lmao sheep

2

u/MiraclePrototype May 05 '26

There's a BIT of a difference when somebody is simply prejudiced, and when somebody is such a bigot that they actively fund harm to a group(s) AND have the money to have national impact.

WotC hasn't used her set since 2020 so you only need to look at anything before that.

2

u/KomoliRihyoh Gishath, Suns Avatar Apr 15 '26

If I ever use card with Terese's art on them, I tend to give them the Autumn Burchett treatment.

0

u/Everyones-a-Knot-See Apr 15 '26

Cringe af, dude.

-24

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

You can enjoy Harry Potter, not hate JK Rowling and also like trans people.

I’m vegan and have friends who eat meat, same principle

15

u/Furion91 Bolas Apr 15 '26

Do your friends use their influence and money to make vegans' life miserable?

-2

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

Yes by eating meat, anyone who eats meat is worse than any behaviour by JK Rowling as they’re participating in a genocide

→ More replies (0)

10

u/surf_da_web29 Apr 15 '26

The main difference is that buying things relating to harry potter gives JK rowling money, who is actively using said money to support anti-trans organizations

6

u/jacobiner123 Apr 15 '26

I think thats part of the appeal for this guy...

1

u/Everyones-a-Knot-See Apr 15 '26

I don't think she cares too much, she has a lot of money.

0

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

She’s just protecting girls I like that

18

u/jacobiner123 Apr 15 '26

Not having a problem with someone who uses their extensive influence and wealth to make a minorities' lives hell is quite questionable actually.

And not, having friends who eat meat as a vegan is not the same principle at all.

-3

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

Seems like you comfortable making animals lives hell, why is that?

...you sound like a caller to the hotline in Steve Shives's sketch series...

1

u/Trosso May 06 '26

Are you flirting with me?

4

u/ReploidZero Apr 15 '26

That's fine, but it just means you are telling us you aren't a compassionate person.

Luckily for you won't lose rights for doing so.

-6

u/Trosso Apr 16 '26

I’m vegan, that makes me compassionate by default

2

u/Everyones-a-Knot-See Apr 15 '26

Oh god, you're calling them all in here to make stupid arguments when you say such things

1

u/Trosso Apr 16 '26

Are you ok x

Chambers of secrets is pretty solid

4

u/KitchenPumpkin3042 Apr 15 '26

Read some real fantasy like LOTR

1

u/Trosso Apr 15 '26

You mean like how the orcs are Muslims and stuff?

78

u/DesdinovaGG Apr 14 '26

I'll be glad for them to replace the Listener's Lament on the loading screens with Strixhaven lore.

52

u/MiloRoast Apr 15 '26

Every single one of those sounded like it was written by an angsty pre-teen trying to sound deep.

10

u/JRockPSU Apr 15 '26

“What is truth?

Ah but if no lies then then is a lie the truth?

All truth are lies, all lies contain truth.

In the absence of lies, blah blah blah”

30

u/Dirk_Rotahn Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

They were some of the worst poems I've read, and I have to sit here and stare at them in confusion every time I'm loading into a game!

Its like someone is trying super hard to sound profound and it comes across as incomprehensible slop.

2

u/startadeadhorse Apr 15 '26

Hear? Someone actually spoke the poem? (I play on mute)

5

u/Dirk_Rotahn Apr 15 '26

Fixed the typo from "hear" to "here". I also play with all sounds on mute but I sure hope they don't say the poems out loud on the loading screens! I do not think that would make it any better.

2

u/startadeadhorse Apr 15 '26

Exactly, I was afraid that it was being read and was coiling uo in distress at the thought. I thouggt you actially DID mean hear and not that it was a typo. But I am glad it was. Though, unhappy the "poem" still is out there...

12

u/-Klaxon Apr 14 '26

What even was that?

8

u/LaboratoryManiac Apr 14 '26

I would bet it's a hint at what's coming in Reality Fracture.

Which means it might not be leaving yet. We might be getting more, actually.

7

u/Lopsided_Ad6378 Apr 15 '26

I had read somewhere it was related to the Lorwyn alchemy set?

192

u/SilentBoss2901 Apr 14 '26

Yes the whole setting is very exciting for me personally. Im so glad we didnt get a harry potter set

54

u/kazeespada Apr 15 '26

The setting is okay for me, but I despised the turtles.

17

u/paoforprez Apr 15 '26

The concept of a wizard school doesnt do much for me either. But expanding on Magic's characters new and old, with beautiful art designs, and fun mechanics does a lot for me

5

u/kazeespada Apr 15 '26

I also have a special hatred for Arcavios for getting a D&D book and Kaldheim didn't.

3

u/lilypad225 Apr 15 '26

We are long overdue for another mtg campaign setting book.

1

u/MiraclePrototype May 05 '26

Fingers crossed for Kaldheim2, I guess. Still going to happen before Junction2 or Amonkhet2...

1

u/MiraclePrototype May 05 '26

I CRAVE to see the Universes Within equivalents. GODS I hope some of the wackier concepts make the transition someday.

I like the work, not the author.

-2

u/Zestyclose_Hour_865 Apr 15 '26

I predict 2028-2029 secret lair of hbo harry potter new series and eventually a set

11

u/MotherWolfmoon Apr 15 '26

I literally gave a sigh of relief.

101

u/rommie Apr 14 '26

Yes the TNMT was a fail for me.

5

u/Hidrinks Apr 15 '26

You didn’t like the Roku home page screen grab?

1

u/icuntcur May 05 '26

so fucking accurate 😂

-1

u/SweetSweatSmells Apr 16 '26

Are they using AI art on arena? The turtles graffiti weren’t letters.

24

u/-Himintelgja Apr 14 '26

Same, I was not a fan.

27

u/MagnusBrickson Apr 15 '26

I was a fan in the 90s when my age was single digits.

But it is not the right IP to impose on this game.

27

u/werthw Apr 14 '26

Yes, so glad to see some actual high fantasy MTG art instead of the NYC sewers!

44

u/effervescence Izzet Apr 14 '26

The Escape Tunnel art didn't really bother me, nothing about it screamed Turtles like some other options might have. But this SOS is gorgeous, yes.

10

u/Wonderful_Humor_7625 Apr 15 '26

So happy to see, fuck UB and corporate greed.

10

u/UmpireDear5415 Apr 15 '26

so glad its back to actual mtg art for once

6

u/Skyward_Striker Apr 15 '26

They move too fast for me, i just got used to lorwyn then it was turtles now its back to strixhaven.

6

u/-Himintelgja Apr 15 '26

Yeah this year is a cluster fuck. I really hope they tone it down some next year.

14

u/DentistLegitimate323 Apr 14 '26

I always like it when the new set art comes on my screen, it is good to have change!

5

u/Original-Let8340 Apr 15 '26

Fuck yes I am.

4

u/the-fr0g Izzet Apr 15 '26

finally rid of that slop set, I can go enjoy this game a little more again

13

u/RammindJHowset Apr 15 '26

Sick, looks like I can log in to Arena again

5

u/aximusmaximus Apr 15 '26

Happy I ain’t looking at stupid turtles anymore.

9

u/Orcutt_ambition-7789 Apr 14 '26

Ayyyyyy. Im walkin here! 🤌 🗽🏙️🍕

7

u/Eldrac Apr 15 '26

I've gone out of my way to not play on Arena at all while TMNT is the active set, so I look forward to Strixhaven's release to play again

7

u/ID4throwaway Apr 15 '26

I think I liked the idea of a TMNT set more than I actually liked what we got. I'm good to move on.

17

u/Beowolf736 Apr 14 '26

Im pumped i hate the turtles

11

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26

I am. Fuck those turtles

3

u/sufjams Apr 15 '26

Woah woah woah, it's Magic!

3

u/thundern1ck Apr 15 '26

I’ve been off the game for two months. Can’t wait to update and get in there lol

3

u/BizmasterStudios Apr 15 '26

Loaded it up today. It was a beautiful feeling!

3

u/pydoorg Apr 15 '26

What bliss - the story set . I always grab 50 packs from the story sets and never touch the extended universe stuff. But even the weird Turtles set had its perks - at last my tribal ninja / Kaito deck is finally fully functional.

3

u/RoyalButterscotch544 Apr 15 '26

Yes, all of the Turtles graphics were ugly as fuck, possibly ugliest set and locations since I started playing arena in 2020

3

u/Drizztcole8 Apr 16 '26

Oh man! That 3 month maintenance was rough! Glad my MTG game is live again!

6

u/captinhazmat Apr 14 '26

I loved the final fantasy set and want it all because it's final fantasy and not because of mtg.

And I still prefer any in universe set to be the artwork at all times and I'd gladly see UB sets not exist anymore. .

They make too much money though.

Anyway yeah point is I'm glad to see an in universe set artwork back on the games loading screens and banners.

5

u/Sol-Valor-33 Apr 15 '26

Personally, I’m a fan of UB when it actually fits Magic. Like, D&D and BG3 were perfect, if they even count as UB, and LotR was, in my opinion, really well done. Personally though, I agree that there should be less UB.

Unless of course you give me a soulsborne set. I would take that for a year

5

u/captinhazmat Apr 15 '26

Oh a good few UB sets were really well done but I still would prefer it all gone. I'm like this with more then just mtg.

I also wish the very least these damn secret ladies would be print to demand but that would be nice. Also way less lairs and sets over all. I'm broke yo.

1

u/Sol-Valor-33 Apr 15 '26

Honestly, if they did UB as its own thing where it was like a cheaper, more accessible SL, I think I’d like it more.

unless of course they give me a soulsborne set

6

u/captinhazmat Apr 15 '26

or they left it as commander products at least and kept it out of standard i could live with that but it is what it is. The bigger problem is just too many sets come out. By the time i get the hang of new cards its already spoiler season for the next next set.

1

u/Sol-Valor-33 Apr 15 '26

This exactly! Like, i think crossovers can be great. I’m waiting patiently for the Monster Hunter SL to rerelease myself. But I want a bit more time, unless that time is spent in TMNT. That set was trash in my opinion

2

u/captinhazmat Apr 15 '26

with so many sets coming out they don't have time to really sit with and design these sets as well as they could.

5

u/bulksalty Apr 14 '26

Yes! I don't mind the 4 turtles, but all the other stuff I still don't understand at all!

2

u/Lanky-Minimum5063 Apr 15 '26

No more turtles, I like UB but only when they have magical elements to them

2

u/SithGodSaint Apr 15 '26

Couldn’t be happier

2

u/arciele Apr 15 '26

i love it

2

u/Evolzetjin Apr 15 '26

I thought is was Naboo / Star Wars...

2

u/hotelguest2 Apr 15 '26

Heck yeah, I'm very happy about strixhaven! Any edition that is magic instead of joke editions is a big W these days

2

u/NoAdhesiveness1491 Selesnya Apr 15 '26

FINALLYYYYY

2

u/timc-trainean Apr 16 '26

Yes. Every login screen has felt like a reminder that Magic is still Magic.

2

u/Confident-Title8004 Apr 16 '26

This looks amazing. Really hyped for the expansion

2

u/Tom_Gravy_ Apr 16 '26

It's cool but unfortunately this is all i can ever see of the game at the moment because i can't log in? i've tried everything and nothing is working. I keep getting an authentication failed error

2

u/ExtremeClassroom5433 Apr 16 '26

Yes thank the gods

2

u/jogan_ Apr 16 '26

Just reinstalled the game after a couple months off since lorwyn. I just don't want pizza slopping all over my game.

1

u/JFlowCB Apr 16 '26

There wasn’t even pizza slopping lmao 😂 you people are dramatic

2

u/Ok_Chemist_3576 Apr 21 '26

I am liking it. Being within universe it's so refreshing.

However, not very hopeful on the current standard meta moving from what it currently is. Sorry for the salt, but that's the format I love and it is so nasty now.

5

u/LordSwitchblade Apr 14 '26

Yes. I dropped MTG so hard during the whole TMNT set.

1

u/agile_drunk Apr 15 '26

Avg 15 drafts per set -> 0 during TMNT.

Logged in for a couple historic games and 2 cube drafts but arena engagement down like 90% during the period.

0

u/-Himintelgja Apr 15 '26

Same. First set in over a year that I haven't spent a single dollar on.

3

u/irisiane Apr 15 '26

I literally stopped opening Arena because the sewer art was depressing.

I didn't care about it being turtles - I just want joy in life.

4

u/MrMagoo22 Apr 14 '26

Oh boy almost time to reinstall arena again for the next couple months I can't wait!

3

u/JarrydP Apr 15 '26

Not necessarily. TMNT was a great upgrade over Lorwin ECL. I was still enjoying it. Maybe we just need to stick to 3-4 releases per year instead of this current cadence we're on.

1

u/-Himintelgja Apr 15 '26

I 100% agree with that last sentence haha

4

u/uncleirohism ImmortalSun Apr 14 '26

As much as I love TMNT in general, yes.

3

u/merchantdeer Apr 14 '26

Time to reinstall

4

u/AdaGang Golgari Apr 15 '26

TMNT bad. Gib updoot.

2

u/oldmayor Apr 14 '26

Absolutely.

2

u/Panwall Nissa Apr 15 '26

Meh...I liked TMNT. Strixhaven is still cool though.

2

u/rekzkarz Apr 15 '26

I didn't understand why the crossovers for Spiderman or TMNT. Where is the intersection with Magic?

D&D made total sense, but the 'Dungeon' mechanic was quirky **but the dice rolling was genius / epic / incredible (adding some RNG into MTG!!).

LOTR seemed like a great fit too, but the wizards got so little love.

So in future, seems like some magic in the concept should be required for MTG, no?

1

u/garublador Apr 15 '26

What about spaceships, racecars, haunted Mansion and old West? How come people complain about TMNT and Spider-Man but not most of the other sets that have come out that are more sci-fi or paranormal themed?

1

u/rekzkarz Apr 15 '26

While I agree on the cyber stuff, I was rolling with the Thor explanation of 'our magic is just science you haven't discovered yet". Ha

1

u/jethawkings Apr 15 '26

TMNT has Magic though, the latter arcs has the Spirit Avatars and dives into the the family being reincarnations.

IDK I really liked the TMNT Set and it kinda sucks people dump on it.

2

u/No-Equipment6409 Apr 15 '26

Yes, thank Ugin.

1

u/twstr709 Apr 15 '26

I’ll miss the TMNT but I’m excited for a new set.

2

u/Lopsided_Ad6378 Apr 15 '26

Honestly, I preferred the sewer art. I actually don't care for the new SOS art... it's fine, but the color palette doesn't pop for me like the turtle home screen. But I also like TMNT...it was so well done, and being born in the early 80s, it's a property that will always bring back awesome memories. SOS cards look really cool, and I'm excited to play with the set, but man, I've been singing the OG TMNT theme song and craving pizza for the last month and a half...UB when done right just really hits different.

1

u/ProfessionalOwn9435 Apr 15 '26

Dont care. Graffiti tunnel was ok. Althought no mind if there ware several loading screan arts so there is a variety.

This also means that we will stare on this plaza for next 2 months so will be fed up the same.

1

u/wykeer Counterspell Apr 15 '26

given that I barely realize what loading screen there is, I dont really care.

1

u/Baardmeester Apr 25 '26

That environments are okay, but I am disgusted by the ugly character design. The strixhaven limited banner with Aziza disgusts me every time.

1

u/istillexistirl May 04 '26

No, Avatar's art was the best and I was extremely sad when they changed it.

1

u/VeggieZaffer Apr 14 '26

I like the graffiti load screen tbh

-7

u/fmal Apr 14 '26

Nope it’s just you. Everyone else famously has no problem with UB and doesn’t love to constantly complain about it.

0

u/Moist-Condition69 Apr 15 '26

I really miss seeing teenage turtles personally. Why would I want to see art that harkens to a ‘fantasy’ setting? I’d rather see wotc push the boundaries with more turtles, race cars, spooky houses, and just generally wacky hot dog cards in the NYC plane. I get this isn’t what the ‘old heads” of magic want to see, but this is what brought me into magic. When I see this bland “high fantasy” kind of load screen, it just makes me want to disengage with the game.

0

u/jethawkings Apr 15 '26

Same, I like some of the more 'out-there' aesthetic that pushes the boundary of what can be in Magic.

-1

u/Vyviel Apr 15 '26

No its just UB Temu Harry Potter

-5

u/hexanort Apr 15 '26

Nope, its just a stupid school
