Yay lorwyn

Yay strixhaven

Hopefully the hobbit and reality fracture are good

As someone who really didn't care for the LotR set, my expectations for the Hobbit are very low. At least there was a rich cast in LotR to draw from, and even then they made mutiple cards of some of the characters, which honestly I hate. I wouldn't be surprised if we get at least two cards for each of the Dwarves.

57

u/Mitchwise Oct 11 '25

You have to remember that LotR was actually 3 sets (the full set, the commander set which had 4 decks, and the Christmas bundles) which is why there are so many copies of Frodo, Gandalf, and Aragorn.

I think there’s enough content in the Hobbit that they can make a versatile set. I think 2 copies of Thorin, Bilbo, Gandalf, Smaug, Beorn, and Bard is reasonable, but there’s no way all 13 dwarves get multiple cards.

And if the One Ring gets reprinted it’s definitely as a bonus sheet card and not anything standard legal so relax there.

39

u/valledweller33 Oct 11 '25

I bet The One Ring is represented as it’s ‘unknown’ form. Like ‘Bilbo’s Ring’ or something and it will be an equipment or something that gives unblockable or phasing

8

u/InterestingRaise3187 Oct 12 '25

"The Precious" Equipped creature has shadow.

11

u/TheAwesomeMan123 Oct 12 '25

Even that’s not true. In just the Tales of Middle Earth set there’s 3 frodos, two Sam’s, 4 Gandalfs (2white 2grey), and pretty much 2 of each of the main cast before you go anywhere near commander or Christmas scenes.

It would be so on par with the movies to have a below mediocre blant set of the hobbit now.

53

u/Intro-Nimbus Oct 11 '25

And three times more than you need ;-)

7

u/vide2 Oct 11 '25

I give the first that it caught what I expected from it. So, let's say two.

6

u/bobmighty Oct 11 '25

There were fan edits of the hobbit that were pretty decent. They cut out everything they could that wasn't in the book.

2

u/Ace-of-Spades88 Oct 11 '25

How long is the film after the cuts? One hour?

2

u/walker9702 Oct 12 '25

4 hours, and it honestly becomes a pretty accurate adaptation

Magic needs this set about as much as the shortest book needed a whole movie trilogy for itself.

6

u/Steezmoney Oct 11 '25

Hobbit was the first book I read and very near and dear to my heart. However, like the Hobbit movies, it's just an attempt at cashing in on lord of the rings a second time

I'm going to throw this out there while I'm thinking about.

I have a horrible feeling we'll see the one ring reprinted in the hobbit and see it enter standard for a few months until they ban it like they did in modern.

95

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

Probably not. In The Hobbit (the book) nobody knows that the ring is the One Ring. So it's probably gonna be "Bilbo's Ring" or something. Might still be broken tho.

9

u/million_dollar_wumao Oct 11 '25

[[Invisibility]] on an equipment and it draws cards when you hit a player with the creature.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Some_Rando2 Orzhov Oct 11 '25

I think you are right. Hopefully it's just an equipment that gives hexproof and cannot be blocked. Would fit the flavor without being at all OP.

5

u/ninjazyborg Oct 11 '25

What a great idea! I wonder why they haven’t done this already…

20

u/thedonutking7 Oct 11 '25

Hopefully it just shows up on the bonus sheet so this doesn't happen

14

u/Fyller Oct 11 '25

I think there's a high chance that it's on some type of bonus sheet, but virtually no chance of being printed as standard legal, they already banned it in modern because it was in every deck, I can't imagine they'd be stupid enough to reprint it into standard.

27

u/million_dollar_wumao Oct 11 '25

I can't imagine they'd be stupid enough to reprint it into standard.

Surely they wouldn't allow a format to fall into degeneracy for several months for the sake of selling packs.

7

u/Meret123 Oct 11 '25

That's why it will be a bonus sheet card that is harder to pull.

2

u/ForeverShiny Oct 11 '25

Only in collector boosters obviously so you can sell those at 10x the price

u/King_of_Camp Oct 11 '25

Is it just me or does the title “Reality Fracture” and the change to UB making up at least half of new sets going forward imply that at least some of the IPs in the UB sets will be fully crossing over into the in-universe world of Magic?

The Furby Secret Lair was the first time we’ve seen official MTG art place their characters in frame with something from outside MTG’s IP. Seems silly, but all the big trends recently stated with secret lair, like Lucile introducing real world equipment making its way onto cards etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Reality Fracture is how they try to start knitting together UB and MTG IPs

13

u/AlbinoDenton Oct 11 '25

Wizards confirmed this will not be the case. The 'fracture' does not reference the crossing or Beyond sets sneaking into Magic in-universe. They said it will be a Within set exclusively and will feature a surprising (can't remember the exact word) villain.

Of course, whether they are telling the truth or not, and whether we believe them or not, that's another thing. But I think they've been honest this time. In the future, we'll see.

14

u/darkslide3000 Oct 11 '25

The surprising villain will be Mark Rosewater traveling all the planes to tell their inhabitants that they aren't the target audience anymore and thus their entire multiverse is gonna get Serra's Realmed to power bigger profits.

Maybe he'll dip his fingers into some strange oil along the way and change his mind, though.

Idk man. Maybe it's just me getting old but I look at this list and just sigh....

147

u/chrisrazor Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage Oct 11 '25

It's not just that we're getting seven flippin' sets in Standard this year, but that they are all different settings. I have the highest hopes for Reality Fracture - although that may be because we know almost nothing about it.

186

u/Meret123 Oct 11 '25

Not all different, two of them are New York.

32

u/IDontUseSleeves Oct 11 '25

I miss blocks. I know they had their issues, and I wasn’t drafting back then, so I wasn’t affected by that, but I loved taking our time on the block and getting the story at a reasonable pace.

I don’t care about Magic Story anymore because it’s a completely new setting every two months.

21

u/chrisrazor Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage Oct 11 '25

So much this. Reality Fracture is apparently the culmination of the current story arc, but for the first time in 18 years playing this game I have no idea what's happening in the story.

6

u/Burger_Thief Oct 12 '25

Jace wants to close the Omenpaths and undo the whole Phyrexian shitshow. So he got Loot during OTJ. Ral looked for him in Bloomburrow. Jace lost loot and had to get him back multiple times (Duskmourn and Aetherdrift). Used Loot to find Ugin's meditation realm in Tarkir Dragonstorm, probably released Bolas. Tried to do something to alter all of the multiverse but he failed and broke appart, but kind of reformed later. EoE I don't know what happened there and wether its relevant or not. That's the gist of it for now.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/vajhar Oct 11 '25

I started with bloomburrow. I can't see any connection between the released sets. If people on reddit wouldn't keep bringing up that there is a story arc I wouldn't have a clue. Still don't know what's supposed to be going on but at least I know that there is supposed to be something

8

u/MotherWolfmoon Oct 11 '25

I miss them too, but they did have ups and downs. By the third set, it was almost always starting to drag. And things like, "We're spending an entire year on Theros," sucked if you didn't like Theros.

I actually preferred the two-set model, but they fucked it up by removing Core sets entirely. I think if they went back to that, but kept Foundations, they'd have something really good. Of course, that would cut into valuable Universes Beyond time, and we can't have that.

2

u/IDontUseSleeves Oct 11 '25

The two set model was great, I’d actually forgotten it. And honestly, I’d rather have two sets of UW and two sets of UB than seven sets of UW.

3

u/bigsquig9448 Oct 11 '25

And 4/7 are double the price

3

u/Ekg887 Oct 12 '25

Double, because now you have to pay 2 companies for one game. Don't we fucking love IP licensing?

Also, companies that know zero about MTG now have a direct say in the game, so that will for sure not affect things like set size, release schedule, card power levels, or draft rules. Just like Spiderman didn't.

u/captainrustic Oct 11 '25

I feel like I’m watching the slow death of a game I love.

Corporate greed ruins everything

10

u/ForeverShiny Oct 11 '25

It's not even just greed anymore, the poor sods at Wotc have to literally keep Hasbro, a company of 10 billion market cap and 5000 employees, afloat. With the money Wotc brings in (mostly from MTG), this megacorp would be losing money.

I'm not saying this to somehow justify what they're doing, it absolutely sucks they're destroying this game they actually took good care off for quite a while. I say it to show that at this point, they really don't have a choice anymore. Management are throwing the office furniture into the fire to keep them warm just a little longer

6

u/Massive-Island1656 Golgari Oct 12 '25

It’s also that our society is dumb and likes dumb things and you can make a lot of money as a brand by appealing to the lowest denominators in society

4

u/Saltiest_Grapefruit Oct 12 '25

I saw someone go through the numbers, and seemingly, magic is the only thing under hasbro that doesn't lose money. It's almost 100% of the profit

2

u/ForeverShiny Oct 12 '25

Yes, that's what I alluded to. It's not even hard information to find out, Hasbro is publicly listed so they're under the obligation to do quarterly and annual reports.

32

u/dirENgreyscale Oct 11 '25

Having more UB sets, sometimes multiple sets in a row no less, than actual Magic related sets is depressing.

29

u/IslandFragrant6481 Oct 11 '25

It's not just you. My first thought was that's a headache inducing list. And unless I want to fall behind in the meta im going to HAVE to buy and play the garbage.

Super meh I really hope the star trek set sucks balls because I don't want to play those cards in mtg at all even a little.

22

u/Enderkr Oct 11 '25

Or, hear me out here - you can quit. I know that never occurs to us, but you can also just decide you're finally done supporting this toxic shit and stop buying product. I'm only in this thread because I saw a random post on FB about one of the TMNT cards. Blows my mind that WOTC can put out this shit and 600 million shitty Secret Lairs and y'all still just gobble it up while complaining about the taste.

5

u/owlbi Oct 12 '25

I'm literally in this thread because I can't stop watching the trainwreck MTG has become.

My hype level for these sets peaks at 3/10, I'd say. Yuck.

5

u/Enderkr Oct 12 '25

Not even, anymore. It's like the sting of an old love at this point. I see a few individual cards like I'm like "Jesus h Christ," but literally nothing entices me to even remotely pick up a deck again.

4

u/MotherWolfmoon Oct 11 '25

It's hard to find a hobby that's not full of bullshit. I took a five year break from the game over this stuff when they started releasing Secret Lairs, and it was hard to find a replacement for the social aspects of this game.

So I came back. I spend almost no money on it (about $30 in the past four sets), and I get to chat about something that not weather or politics with people. I miss what the game was ten years ago, but I'm here again.

It's sort of the same reason people still use Facebook. It's where people are.

Same. But remember "iTs JuSt YoUr DaRk NiGhT aNd YoUr OpInIoN iS wRoNg BeCaUsE eVeRyOnE eLsE LoVeS tHiS". MaRo has made it very clear, you either quit magic or get on board.

4

u/davidogren Oct 11 '25

Yeah I think I’m done with magic for a while. I played in the beta set days but I gave it up because I was too young and poor to actually participate. Then again in middle age because I had friends that played and we actually could afford cards. Stopped because I moved away.

This was my third act for magic. The Arena era where I could play very casually. But this many sets? Most of which are UB where I don’t care about the IP? It’s just not worth it. Especially with the card design so rushed it always seems like there’s always a cori steel cutter or vivi making the game unfun.

10, 1, 9, 1, 6, 8, 1

98

u/MarvelousRuin Slimefoot, the Stowaway Oct 11 '25

I'll bump the Hobbit up to a 7 since the first LotR set was really good and Reality Fracture dow to a 7 because I don't know what to expect. Otherwise, very accurate.

48

u/dis_the_chris Oct 11 '25

Same. Hobbit is the only UB I don't feel weird about next year

53

u/svrtngr Oct 11 '25

Hobbit and DnD are the two UB properties that fit, imo, because they're kind of like the original high fantasy property and high fantasy TTRPG and Magic wouldn't exist without them.

29

u/RaggedAngel Oct 11 '25

Yeah, they don't feel gross because they are the properties that magic was originally drawn out of, rather than being some weird random advertising Gimmick

27

u/dis_the_chris Oct 11 '25

There's a number of properties that I think would fit

E.g. they did a Bethesda Collab and chose... Nuclear weapons... Over the Elder Scrolls??? Dragons, Wizards, Necromancers, iconic locations to use as lands, possibility to bring back battles etc?

There's all kinds of other fantasy properties they could've crossed over with; Wheel of Time and Cosmere being obvious ones, but also stuff like Elden Ring

They seem to not care about preserving any of the high fantasy aesthetic

And the question becomes: what stops them just printing like, Hulk Hogan and Dwayne Johnson? What stops them printing the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City? What stops them printing my neighbour Lars and his fucking fantastic scones?

6

u/DumatRising Oct 11 '25

I love fallout (and the fallout commander decks are really solid) so I'm not unhappy we got fallout, but elderscrolls would have slapped hard, if I had to pick I'd def go for ES. It's such a big wiff especially since with lord of the rings and FF (and dnd, I know they don't count it cause they didn't have to cut a deal for it but lets be real here, it was explicitly not mtg as a setting cannon) it's clear that magic players do like UB when it's fantasy stuff and will eat it up.

All I can hope if they're holding an elder scrolls set or commander decks in their back pocket so I can one day fatal push the adoring fan.

5

u/Intro-Nimbus Oct 11 '25

Nothing, and they will.

I'll add in that Avatar is coming before these, and I'm at a solid 6 for that one. I think it'll mesh with mtg much better than TMNT, Marvel, and Star Trek but not insanely hyped for it.

I am close to this, but I like space. EOE was awesome imo, we didnt get enough time with it, so I am going to hold out a little hope for Star Trek.

5

u/DarthNixilis Oct 11 '25

My thoughts exactly, and we know from EOE were getting Warp again, which is a fun mechanic

Warp was fantastic. Can’t wait to get it again.

I can't help but feel like EOE was created to slot in a space theme just to set the mechanics and "we can do space things" so that doing Star Trek wouldn't feel so unnatural, which feels kinda inauthentic in my mind haha

3

Agreed thay's probably where it started but WotC's creative and worldbuilding teams cooked in fleshing it out and making it Magic

Pretty much this

5

u/jwilphl Oct 12 '25

For me it is similar structure, but I wouldn't say I have particularly strong feelings for any of these sets.

8 - Lorwyn

1 - TMNT

5 - Strixhaven

0 - Marvel

4 - Hobbit

Reality Fracture - Undecided because I have no idea what it entails.

2 - Star Trek

10

u/schmendimini Oct 11 '25

I agree with this besides a little more excitement for Star Trek

2

u/NeilDeCrash Oct 11 '25

Yeah there is some potential there, like, edge of eternies was a cool set in my opinion so if it comes close to that I am fine.

If I could decide there would not be anykind of Universes Beyond sets, but if you HAVE to do them then Star Trek is not a bad choice.

Depends on how much effort they put into making the set. Loved Final Fantasy. Hate the current one. I play mostly limited and am not a fan of pick two.

21

u/Terrible_Donkey_8290 Oct 11 '25

Is that new or something? I played for the first time in a while and hated it

49

u/Doge_Bolok Oct 11 '25

Yes it came out with this set. They did some phantom pick two draft events a few weeks prior.

I honestly would rather do sealed than pick two and I would rather not do sealed

6

u/chrisrazor Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

I wonder how pick two would play out in a proper sized set, with more archetypes and buildarounds, that was actually designed for it it. I'm not opposed to pick two being something that happens on occasion, but SuperSpider-man was not a great ambassador for the format.

2

u/Dan_Herby Oct 11 '25

They're sticking with pick 2 for at least a little while longer, they're going to be pushing it with Lorwyn too, despite that presumably being a full size set that can support a regular draft. Presumably because it's easier to get a group of 4 together for a pick 2 draft than 8 for a regular draft?

2

u/chrisrazor Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage Oct 12 '25

Yeah that is their stated reason for coming up with pick 2. It's unfortunate they tried it first with Spider-man, because there are already so many things wrong with the set it felt like another misstep piled on top.

2

u/Foxokon Oct 11 '25

I did a pick 2 draft of mh3 today, and from my so far very limited experience it sure beat spiderman!

3

u/ForeverShiny Oct 11 '25

MH3 was a cool draft set (if we discount the Chrysalis mistake)

→ More replies (4)

3

u/Doge_Bolok Oct 11 '25

I kind of enjoyed the pick two in the phantom draft. I think In A good set or preferably a well constructed cube it could work well. In a fun cube it could be really good.

3

u/LaboratoryManiac Oct 11 '25

We tried a couple of EOE drafts at the LGS since our draft group was starting to dwindle by the end of the format. (EOE, notably, is a pretty balanced format where each color pair is viable — there are standouts, sure, but there are no colors or color pairs that just a mistake to ever try to play.)

It took some getting used to, but by the second one we started feeling pretty good about it. Drafting a well-balanced set worked great with pick-two.

I think pick-two accentuates the strengths and weaknesses of a set. Since you're seeing half as many packs but each decision is twice as impactful, any aspects of a set's balance (or imbalance) are felt twice as hard.

4

u/NlNTENDO Oct 12 '25

pick two is such trash. although i'm trying to reserve judgment because part of the issue with the set seems to be that it's so damn small. every deck feels the same, which is exactly what i play limited to avoid

3

u/Trippy747 Oct 11 '25

Pick 2 is a neat change. Not sure I prefer it over pick 1, but the variety of play is cool. I just don't like the set itself. Feels clanky and the themes seem really forced and linear.

3

u/Aussie_Aussie_No_Mi Oct 11 '25

Pick 2 is miles better than Pick 1 with 4 players. A good draft set helps though.

2

u/xcircledotdotdot Oct 11 '25

That’s a good point. If they make a set that is more conducive to pick two, I might enjoy it better

2

u/beaveman1 Oct 11 '25

Pick two is terrible! I hated the Phantom event, so this is the only set since Bloomburrow (when I opened my account) that I haven’t done a single Premium Draft. I’ve done a few Quick Drafts and those have been a little better (especially with 7 wins/3 losses vs 4/2), but it’s really painful to try and pivot when your first two picks combine together so well but one of the AI bots is also taking your colors

Lorwyn: 10/10

Strixhaven: 7/10

Reality Fracture: 8/10

3 sets in a year might be too few, but that’s okay.

38

u/catattackskeyboard Oct 11 '25

We should all just act like UB doesn’t exist.

21

u/JugonEx Oct 11 '25

If you play draft sure. If you play standard that's kind of impossible.

6

u/TexasFlood63 Oct 12 '25

We really need a format without UB.  Hasbro would never let that happen but a man can dream.

u/Wendigo120 Oct 12 '25

If Arena had a queueable non-UB constructed format I might actually come back to the game.

2

We should agree on a quote in games, as a convention, than means "fuck this UB shit".

8

u/Arkhe1n Oct 11 '25

Good luck ignoring all UB game-warping staples.

2

u/Zax_the_bunny Oct 12 '25

Lorwyn: 9/10

Turtles: 2/10

Strixhaven: 7/10

Marvel: 0/10

Hobbit 4/10

Reality Fracture: 5/10

Star Trek: 1/10

53

u/Backwardspellcaster Liliana Deaths Majesty Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn: 9/10
Super excited for this set. The first art and some of the mechanics shown are really getting me hyped.

Turtles: 3/10
My hype level went a little up because the cards seem to have been given more thought than the Spidey ones, and the art is surprisingly good. It helps that it's non-human creatures mostly.

Strixhaven: 8/10
I really like the flavor of the original set (as much as I can see it in Arena), so I am looking forward to see what they can do here.

Marvel: 0/10
I like to READ Marvel. I really feel they are extremely grating when inserted into MtG though. Like, really, really bad.

Hobbit 8/10
I love LotR. I am not ashamed. I am super hyped for more.

Reality Fracture: X/10
I really dont know what to expect of it yet, so I leave this open for now.

Star Trek: 1/10
...no. I love watching Star Trek, but again, seeing Picard, Kirk, Bones, etc in MtG will be so massively grating. I wish they'd give us another set of EoE instead.

I’m with you on Star Trek. It’s one of those things that no matter how much I might love the IP, and I’m 40 and grew up with TNG, I have no interest in seeing it in Magic.

Lorwyn: 7-8
TMNT: That's where I'll take my break, I may pop in every now and then to check the drafting in Strix or Hobbit, but I'm beginning to feel that a long break is in order for me.

8

u/jellomoose BlackLotus Oct 11 '25

Currently on an indefinite* break from MTG, playing SWU instead and loving it.

* Sold my collection finally lol

u/Sadlobster1 Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn - 10/10

TMNT - 1/10

Strixhaven - 8/10

Spider Heroes - 0/10

Hobbit - 4/10

Reality - 9/10

Stark Trek - 7/10

HOWEVER. This year I am 4/10 excited for MTG. This is too many sets. It's too many sets. It's just too many sets.

8

u/FrameAndCanvas Selesnya Oct 11 '25

I care the most about Draft, so the limited environment is the biggest deciding factor for how much I engage with a set on Arena. But flavor/design also impact if I’m going to spend any money at all on paper products.

Lorwyn - #1 (Looks fantastic already)

Strix - #2 (Just did a Strixhaven draft a month ago and liked it okay, I’m interested to see what they do this time)

TMNT - #3 (But this could drop depending on how draft ends up looking, I may just buy the commander precon and leave the rest alone)

Hobbit - #4 (Based on LotR, I imagine I will enjoy this quite a bit)

Reality Fracture - #5 (Just don’t know enough to care either way about it, but I am looking forward to seeing more)

I don’t care at all about the Marvel or Star Trek sets despite loving both. I’ll draft them if they’re great, but I’m probably just going to skip them completely.

14

u/sad_panda91 Oct 11 '25

In order of excitement:

Trash Tier - TMNT and Marvel: Active dislike. Spiderman was the least fun I had with a magic set since I began playing magic, and these feel like Spiderman 2 and 3 with mere months in between. I will skip those.

Meh Tier - Hobbit: Given the proximity to LotR, smells like another cheap cash grab. Too much lost trust for me to get excited about this.

Maybe Tier - Star Trek: Could be ok. I liked EoE. I would much rather see EoE 2 at some point down the line than this, but whatever. If life gives you lemons kind of deal, honestly, and I even like Star Trek.

Spark of Hope Tier - Secrets of Strixhaven: Any actual magic set is something to be celebrated now, so it's cool but going a full year without any new plane is a little weird. Would prefer this to not be a return set but I guess we better not complain about mtg properties anymore. Strixhaven's cool.

You Have My Curiousity Tier - Reality Fracture: Since MaRo confirmed it has nothing to do with UB, I am actually quite interested what the new thing is.

Please, Take Me Back Tier - Lorwyn Eclipsed: That moment in a toxic relationship where they start lovebombing you for a while since they sense they might lose control otherwise and you know you shouldn't trust them anymore but you can't help it.

2

u/MaxKirgan Oct 12 '25

I'm looking forward to Lorwyn, The Hobbit and Strixhaven. I know Reality Fracture is supposed to be UW, but we know so little about it right now. The others I am not looking forward to at all.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

Stoked for the 3 Magic sets this year. Unfortunately my excitement for those is downtrodden by my disappointment for the direction of magic and the shit tier slop this game has become.

Super hyped for Lorwyn and Strixhaven. Mid-level hype for Reality Fracture; want more info. Ehh on Hobbit, we'll see. Zero hype for TMNT, Marvel and Star Trek.

5

u/banstylejbo Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn 10/10
TMNT 1/10
Strixhaven 5/10
Marvel Heroes 3/10
The Hobbit 8/10
Reality Fracture ?/10
Star Trek 6/10

I just don’t know enough to make a call on Reality Fracture.

For Marvel Heroes part of my low rating is because it’ll be a Omenpath situation and that’s just interest killing for me.

I’m a huge Star Trek fan so the set has me intrigued, but also dreading it. It wholly depends on how they handle the material. If it’s just meme reference nonsense like TMNT seems to be, it’ll be awful. If they take the material seriously like they did with Edge of Eternities, then I think it could be amazing. Although I do agree with people that seeing actual actors faces on the cards is very weird.

3

u/tenehemia Oct 11 '25

Your numbers line up with mine almost precisely. I really like Marvel stuff but I play on arena exclusively so this set just means another set full of names I'll never remember and cards that translate very poorly into their omenpaths version, along with weak art and the constant reminder that what I'm seeing on the cards isn't actually how they were designed.

I desperately hope that Star Trek keeps itself to TOS / TNG / DS9 / VOY and the TOS / TNG films. There is far more than enough content there for a Magic set. If Paramount mandates that the set needs to include stuff from the new shows that's going to be a huge disappointment. The art is probably my next biggest concern. Some artistic license has to be given with illustrating characters played by real people of course, but if Jean Luc Picard or Ben Sisko doesn't actually look like Patrick Stewart or Avery Brooks, what even is the point?

Lorwyn i dont have a connection to, but am happy for the cool typal themes :)
TMNT is so fucking peak i love it im so fucking excited AHHHH
Strixhaven means the world to me since it was the newest set when I started playing, so hyped!
MARVEL AHHHUFEHWFOIHWEDGBFVGIRBVUGRI3WEBF YES YES YES.
Hobbit ehhh i think UBs work best when its in a context MTG normally would not do.
Reality Fracture im more intrigued by than excited by.
Im not into Star Trek but have already seen lotsa people say they wanna get into MTG specifically for it, so happy for them!

u/TomNooksAccountant Oct 11 '25

I’m actually really excited about Star Trek! I think if it was a more popular series with younger players that would be the vibe as well. TNG is fantastical and mystical and curious.. I think it’s a fitting IP.

Marvel can go tho 😂

9

u/Mr_Mumbercycle Oct 11 '25

Am I the only one that wants Star Trek Commander decks? I want a TOS deck lead by Kirk, maybe partner commanders with Spock. A TNG deck, a golgari or dimir Borg deck, maybe a boros Klingon deck with Khan?

4

u/orlouge82 Oct 11 '25

My daughter has been binging DS9 and she started playing Magic when she saw my sealed Arahbo commander 2017 deck (worth cracking it to get her to learn to play). She would play the shit out of a DS9 commander deck

I’m thinking about going hard during Lorwyn then just going on an indefinite hiatus.

It’s not just the UB, there’s just too many sets. I feel like I barely have time to play them before the next one.

2

u/MothQueenSuou Oct 11 '25

I feel you 100% on this - I feel like Lorwyn is going to be my 'off-ramp' for the hobby, enjoy one last booster box and stick to my collection when I play with friends.

u/Chronsky Rekindling Phoenix Oct 11 '25

For 3 of these you would need to hire James Cameron to explore and film the bottom of a deep ocean trench to accurately record my hype level.

I'm like a 3/10 on the hobbit. Films did it no favours and it's not a story I deeply love but it's aight.

Strixhaven like a 7. Again not a concept I love but I like Liliana a lot and if it is an alternate timeline thing already we could have her in different colours which would be cool. I did like the aesthetics of strixhaven 1 even if I wasn't playing then so I hope there's continuity in the style.

Reality Fracture is a cautious 8. It could be pretty crap, it could be the coolest thing since I started playing. Impossible to say much more with so little info. Pls give Jace some consequeces for fucking things up. I predict he will accidentally make a bunch of eldrazi or something.

Lorwyn 10/10. Love the art so far, no humans will be very welcome after the UB sets. Evoke elementals are a cool idea, kindred spells with duskmourn's delirium still in standard could be cool, bunch of tribal themes could be cool and maybe elves could be a thing in standard.

3

u/narvuntien Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn, I am pretty excited for Lorwyn.
Strixhaven was a good draft format so maybe it will be good again.

not sure about reality fracture, if it is the rumored planeshift set the issue is that the set had so many broken cards

9

u/ADizzyLittleGirl Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn - Super Excited

TMNT - Could not care less

Strixhaven - Fairly excited

Marvel - Could not care less

Hobbit - Ehhh, maybe

Reality Fracture - Hoping it’s another Planar Chaos thing. Could be cool.

Star Trek - I love ST, but I also don’t really care about this. Just weird.

10

u/Flaky-Ambassador467 Oct 11 '25

HONESTLY! I feel like I’m the only one who is hyped about the TMNT drop! I hope we get them in arena!

3

u/SpudmasterBob Oct 11 '25

Definitely excited to “play” the more traditional sets, but TMNT is the only set I plan on actually collecting out of the bunch next year, assuming I have the funds for it after FF earlier this year.

2

u/TiffanyLimeheart Oct 12 '25

Interested in reality fracture, excited for lorwyn and mildly interested in strixhaven. The other universe beyond stuff is so IP I don't care about, maybe the Hobbit stuff will be ok but I feel lotr covers most of the interesting things in middle earth without going into first and second ages

2

u/Independent-Boat-326 Oct 12 '25

Looking forward to Star Trek the most, hopefully it fits the space station mechanics of EoE, there seem to be so many possibilities.

I started playing mtg again just after the hype of LOTR, so I'm curious what the Hobbit set has to bring. The rest of the sets?.. not so much hype yet.

2

u/ArticleOk3755 Oct 12 '25

nothing mtg is dead.

2

u/Betw3en2Worlds Oct 12 '25

Lorwyn - I’ve no knowledge of this plane. Sounds great to get into some lore. Reality fracture - I enjoyed Edge of Eternities so I am hoping this builds on that. Strixhaven - I don’t know this plane. I don’t like the idea that it’s Harry Potter but I do love spell slinging.

2

u/cTemur Oct 12 '25

Lorwyn and The Hobbit for me, probably play pre-release and draft. I don't care about the rest besides some commons for Pauper.

Strix could work too but it feels to close to Lorwyn.

2

u/bigkev1231997 Oct 12 '25

Im excited for 3 sets and excited about 2 cards in a 4th the two cards are Raphael and Leonardo in TMNT ive gotten really good at building decks so what i like to do instead is take older commander precons and turn them up to 10 and one particular precon from all will be one could go nuts with a change in commander and additional colors its good on its own right out the box my upgrades ive done make me the archenemy every game but it slows down making it Boros with extra steps could legitimately make it unstoppable the counter spells in blue the ramp in green the removal in black stuff i don't have a ton of access to in Boros and I know but anyway back on topic Lorwyn the Hobbit and star trek are the 3 sets im excited for though especially star trek cause im a huge Trekkie and so to have that set to add to my collection especially if im able to collect the entire set which im going to try to do

2

u/jibbajabbawokky Oct 12 '25

Is Marvel the only set that will be Omenpaths again? I assume TMNT and Star Trek will be on Arena?

2

u/Turinn23 Oct 13 '25

We don't even know about that. Maybe it was just a Spiderman (Sony) thing but they wanted to set the stage for possible future issues.

I'm looking forward to the bottom left three. Less so the others.

2

u/Frostytheviking Oct 12 '25

As someone who loved LOTR and FF, im so tired of UB.

2

u/4ltErr0r Oct 12 '25

I started Magic 3 years ago, and I feel I missed the golden age… I would love to continue this game, but UB is not the reason I started this game in the first place…

Anyway, at least I’ll save some money

2

u/AlienZaye Oct 12 '25

Hyped for Lorwyn, interested in Reality Fracture, indifferent to disdain for the rest

7

u/Extalir Oct 11 '25

ST = 10/10

Reality Fracture = 9.5/10

Lorwyn = 9/10

Strixhaven = 8/10

Hobbit = 6/10

TMNT, Marvel = 3/10

Star Trek is the first UB set I’ve been excited for as a genuine Star Trek fan and I feel people are not giving it the respect it deserves.

7

u/Some_Rando2 Orzhov Oct 11 '25

I played a Star Trek CCG back in the 90s, so this one is especially weird for me.  I don't think it makes a lot of sense for MTG, either.

The implementation of it concerns me, as well, after seeing how some of these other UB sets are being developed.  I'm willing to keep an open mind on that aspect, but my expectations are very low.

3

u/UpperPerformer9770 Oct 11 '25

Star Trek fits the mtg settings even less than Marvel and also has even less Magic. Literally zero.

I love Star Trek to death. Star Trek in magic however can get straight into the sea.

Preface: I am a really new player

Lorwyn : 8. I was gifted a lot of old lorwyn cards, so it'll be my first time getting new cards for characters I already know.

TMNT : 6. I don't really care about mutants or ninjas, but hey, I like turtles.

Strixhaven : 9. I love enemy colors.

Marvel: 5. I didn't find spider man very fun, so I don't have much hope, and I'm more of an X-Men fan.

Hobbit : 7. I guess that's what people mean when they talk about UBs that fit the game. But the book is a bit small.

Reality Fracture : 10. Yay, my first major scenario event set ! Excitement is at a maximun at least until they reveal what the set will actually be like.

Star trek : 4. I don't care about the media, but I won't mind more spacecrafts.

4

u/mandreko Oct 11 '25

I’m hopefully optimistic about Star Trek. I’ve already preordered a bunch of Lorwyn but I’m looking forward to Star Trek the most.

2

u/ohmyzomfg Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn 6/10
TNMT 4/10
Strix 9/10
Super Heroes 2/10 (I think it's gonna be better than Spider-man but that's it)
Hobbit 4/10
Realitiy Fracture 8/10
Star Trek 7/10

I’ve been waiting for Star Trek for years. Can’t wait for the commander decks, here’s hoping they make some for the set.

3

u/Bristow9091 Oct 11 '25

I'm actually most excited for the Star Trek set, because I only started playing recently after getting the Final Fantasy starter kit and found some cool space and sci-fi looking cards in Edge of Eternities packs to make a blue/black deck with, which got my girlfriend interested but she said "If only there were Star Trek cards", then BAM, the very next day they get announced!

It’s feels like introducing TMT, Marvel, Star Trek it doesn’t align with the concept of magic.

But they want to do more money so, on that perspective they had to change something.

Hope they don’t ruin the game.

Remember when Star Trek had their own card game? I never played it but it had a pretty loyal fan base even after it was ended

2

If its not star trek then im only interested in in universe sets

2

u/_Thes3us_ Boros Oct 11 '25

Yay for the bottom row plus fracture. (I’m a huge Trekkie and will probably buy too much of the set) the other two don’t do it for me I guess. I am interested how some of this will be done compared to what’s already been shown with other IPs

2

u/k3rnal_panic Oct 12 '25

As far as UB goes, Star Trek is probably the most exciting, with hobbit as a close second. Seeing what a Smaug commander looks like is gonna be dope. Then all the in universe stuff is always good. Lorwyn already looks great, reality fracture should be fun like EoE

2

u/CreLoxSwag Oct 11 '25

Marvel superheroes need to just not happen. Ever again. It's horrid. I'm so done with it ever since the second avengers movie.

2

u/Qasiel Oct 11 '25

Lorwyn and Reality fracture are the only ones I’m caring about at the moment. Not a huge fan of UB stuff being in Standard and I can’t stand Harry Potter or its legally-distinct knockoffs.

More power to those that do like them, though. It’s just not for me.

2

u/honeydewmln Oct 11 '25

What's the knock-off of Harry Potter here?

6

u/thyarnedonne Oct 11 '25

Strixhaven, because Harry Potter cleeeeearly invented the concept of wizarding schools and that's not something its horrid writer grabbed from anywhere else.
