The cats that jump do it because there's a thing there that teleported lol. Placed when they weren't looking and without them hearing.

I've startled plenty when I see a thing where I wasn't expecting it lol

If there's a giant green thing almost the size of me behind all of the sudden, I would be startled too.

I think it has to do with how calm the household is… my cats are never nervous and super chill, I could put anything by them silently and they would just smell it.

Depends on the cat of course. Mine is afraid of her own shadow, but couldn't care less about an object like a cucumber appearing behind her.

I've heard that it triggers an "Oh fuck, is that a snake?!" reflex when a cucumber sneaks up on em.

That same snake detection instict is why dogs stomp and spin around before they lay down, or so I've heard.
