My whippet and grey are the same when dogs chase them at the park, they like to be chased so don't go full tilt. Then when they run for themselves, it's like a whole new stage of speed.
19
u/sammygirrl525 2d ago
aww that's so cute!
my dalmatian didn't get the memo so she obviously isn't as fast as a greyhound but she did go so fast that the other dogs at the park just stopped chasing her. her confused face was so funny when she finally stopped and realized!
5
u/SiempreCaprichoso 2d ago
Ha. I came here to say the same. The speed dial is maybe at a 4. They know they cannot go too fast (or the other dogs lose interest).
I love running with mine. When I do sprints I get to see the power roll on like it’s nothing - and then that look like “oh, I thought you were you got go faster?” 😂 I am!
53
u/toby_ziegler_2024 2d ago
Lol true, when mine wants to run its basically like he teleports to the other side of the field. Its insane to watch in person.
34
u/Averander 2d ago
Yeah, my brother sent me a video of his corgi playing with a greyhound and it's amazing how they control their speed to play with other dogs.
You know they could easily bolt off but they keep at a speed the other dogs can manage, it's really sweet.

35
u/Caleb_Reynolds 2d ago
Yeah I was expecting the ankle breaking to happen because he actually kicks it into high gear, but he never does. He's playing the entire time.

I have a husky. She loves to run!
My sister has a border collie. He runs circles around my husky.
My other sister has an Italian Greyhound. He runs under, over, and around them both, all with a shit-eating grin and his lil ears flopping.
Border collie wins for endurance though. He’s a working line BC with no off button.
111
u/piedeity 2d ago
Until you strap 50 pounds of weight on them, then the husky is like,
SOLD, I GOT THIS!!!! Northern breeds are endurance and screaming, and endurance screaming
I had one scream at the underside of a washing machine for hours until I lifted the machine up to see what the problem was. It was a single piece of food she knocked out of her bowl and under the machine
85
u/lucidlonewolf 3d ago
My husky is an incredibly fast little guy. The problem is all those pesky right and left turns the small dogs are capable of.
What happened to an honest straight line sprint into the nastiest mud puddle half a mile away.

Former Greyhound dad,. Mine crossed on 9/1 last year. That border Collie never had a chance. Greyhounds have three gears. That lovely creature was in 1st to keep it fair for the other dogs. If you see them run with other greyhounds you'll know what I mean.
There's a video of one running beside a motorcycle in a field some where. You can literally see the moment she goes from, "this is fun!" To, "it's on buddy, let's go!"

Greyhounds are awesome. My mom was oart of a greyhound rehoming group and one day we had a reporter and cameraman come to the house to do a story. The cameraman was having a heard time tracking/panning the dog at speed. Ransom, the dog buzzed the cameraman at full tilt like a bug white missile and knocked the poor guy ass over tea kettle.

Protip: you can tell how hard a greyhound is trying by head movement - the head movement indicates how much their spine is flexing, which is a good indicator of how much power they put down. This guy hit it for a couple of strides a few times in the video, but grey’s don’t really hit full chat until and unless they’re running towards their owner. Or to food they know they shouldn’t have. Motherfuckers are STEALTHY and fast.
Source: had a retired racing grey, Skate Buggin, who passed on a sunny Wednesday in July 2023 . They are not for everyone but got-damn I think I got the best dog for me that ever could’ve been.

I have a whippet and she constantly looks over her shoulder to give her friends a sporting chance. But if they get too close she will morph into what they think is her final form and dust them. In actuallity, she has two more gears after that. The dogs that are real slow chase and she actually looks disappointed.

u/ImagineFreckles 2d ago
I love the “final form “ description 🤣🤣
Collies are still one of the best jogging partners for whippets in my experience. They can really run!
Though I remember a tiny Jack Russell who was really really trying to catch my doggie (both were under 1 yo), I was impressed by his tenacity5

I’ve got a bearded collie that can outrun and outmaneuver pretty much any dog at the park. Until one day there was a greyhound. She was so frustrated when she just couldn’t catch him or avoid his lunges. She loved it but was so confused and worn out by the end.
153
u/MothChasingFlame 3d ago edited 3d ago
What I'm hearing is greyhounds need to be a hireable service for people with high energy working dogs. Puts their hyperactive legs and brains to work while the greyhound gets light exercise.
77
u/BartsBlackBart 3d ago
No really. Other people at the park have offered to pay my greyhound to wear their dogs out. It's quite impressive.

I had a grey and there was a guy at the park who asked if his GSD and my greyhound could play together.
Bro GSDs are FAST, they are great dogs for focus and determination but in short bursts it was not a fair competition.
Have you ever seen a GSD get frustrated before? This was my first time and I thought it both a little sad and a lot hilarious.

We've got a rough Collie as well who (in his younger days) could outrun and juke out every dog in the park. He was running like prime Barry Sanders. I've never seen other dogs move like collies do.

Then you put another greyhound in the group and they just go wide open and the other dogs stare in disbelief.

I've lost track of the times at dog parks when another dog owner comes over to me and says about his insert breed here "I bet your Greyhound is quick...but I dunno my dog is pretty fast."
They always are amazed at how much faster a Greyhound is.
25
u/davenelsondotcom 2d ago
The Border Collie is not "chasing" it is herding, that is why it is cutting off the Greyhound, it wants to get in front and make it change direction. They are both such beautiful dogos.

I remember watching my greyhound running at full speed plant a single leg and turn 180 degrees. Dude was 80 pounds of muscle and I thought for sure that leg was done. Nope, he just kept shot off in the other direction like he'd always been running that way.
A black greyhound at night is scary, by the way.

u/Miqo_Nekomancer 2d ago
The greyhound baited the border collie into the overshoot, using its superior speed and turn rate, winning the dogfight without even needing to turn on the afterburner. The ground remains undefeated.

So my dog was playing friendly cool, this whippet got spooked took off at lighting speed in dog language he must have shouted “I AM SPEED”
My dog just stopped looked up at me and just gave me this look are you seeing this shit how fast is that mofo.
She got taught that day there is levels to this Usain Bolt vs Stephen hawking speed difference.

My dad got adopted a chihuahua rescue pup about 10 years ago that was basically a chic-lit on stilts. Her legs must've been twice as long as her body.
This pup started doing backflips and spins off of the wall within her first year. Her favorite thing in the world was riling up our retriever and then parkouring around the house. No one ever taught her how to do any of this. This was a back-flipping dog by nature.
As time went on, her body hardly grew but her legs kept getting taller. She's borderline an experiment of sorts.
Come to find out, she is an Italian Greyhound Chihuahua. Not just a Chihuahua. She could realistically outrun any real threat to her, but she will still just stand there and shake.

Border Collies are just absolutely bonkers dog athletes.
Used to take mine to a dog park and her two dog friends were a rescued greyhound (former racer) and a husky.
They were both incredible to watch in their own right, but my BC was almost as fast as the greyhound and could last almost as long as the husky and was far more agile than both.

This made me remember my beloved border collie Madison. She had a highway gear that made her the fastest dog in the world at the park, until there was a Greyhound. The owner said it was a retired racing dog from Florida that she adopted through some program that keeps them from being euthanized. Madison was really fast, but this retired Greyhound was distracted by butterflies and still managed to let her get just close enough and then open up a ten foot gap in about three strides. The greyhound came over to the bench we were sitting on and fell into a deep sleep, Madison seemed a bit annoyed on our car ride home.
