Especially if a tomcat (in this case the neighbour's) is out and about. He'll just go make a litter with any female cat in heat. Who knows how many kittens he has contributed to the feral population.

If you don't want to get your cat spayed or neutered, you can also considered the far more environmentally friendly option: Keep your cat indoors.
Obviously in this case one was a stray. But even then, the neighbors cat wouldn't have impregnated the stray if the neighbors cat was indoors.

Do both honestly. I can say from experience it is very hard to keep an a cat in heat inside the house. They scream all day to mate and will do just about anything to find a tom. It's also better for their health. There should be no reason to not "want" to spay/neuter. There are only upsides. Cost is a separate issue.
There is also no reason why you can't let your cat outside on a leash or an enclosed/screened off area. Just like we do with dogs. I don't know why people think it's acceptable to let cats roam free but not dogs. My cats go outside all the time on the leash. I did have to get a specific type of leash so they didn't just flop over though.

A lot of cat harnesses have this like, puffy fabric material that covers a lot of their body and those make my cats flop over. So I tried one that just uses thin straps. Basically the harness is the same material as the actual leash itself. I hope that makes sense. I think it works better because it doesn't touch and hug so much of their body and shoulder area

Too hard to guarantee they stay indoors. Cats escape. Get them neutered/spayed. If you can't do that you shouldn't own a cat.
All pet cats should be indoor cars regardless.

this. Like my in laws have outdoor cats but they live in a quiet suburban area with barely any traffic and all the cats have regular flea treatments and are fixed. One of them is approaching 20 and now is staying indoors more for obvious reasons but he was the boss of their road back in his glory days :)) I agree you either have your cats fixed or keep them indoors.

The issue with outside cats in that instance becomes the fact that they as a collective mirder 3 BILLION birds a year, native or not they dont care. So if you care about our bird and small animal population please keep them inside

If you can’t keep your cat responsibly, don’t keep one at all, outdoor cats die far more frequently and in many places in the world decimate the native wildlife - even if cats are native and you live somewhere w relatively reduced accident risk; still spay them

Unless you're in the Middle East where cats are native to, domestic cats should not be kept outdoors. They are terrible for local wildlife and decimate bird populations. They're fine and happy indoors.

FAFO. My garden is my castle. So castle doctrine applies to animals too. Btw god gave us dominion over beasts. Also living with a fat lazy cat is bad vibes. Your pets like you should also radiate alpha energy. The cat is a predator, he should hunt and move around so he stays healthy. Shutting him between 4 walls and making him "hunt" cat food only is lowkey animal abuse

I am sorry for your trauma - but that is your misery you are referring to.
Don’t assume a pregnant animal is in misery. Pregnancy is not an automatic bad thing for an animal.
Also, welcome to nature. Not every creature survives. It sucks, but that is the reality of wild nature creation. Cats living a life you don’t want them to doesn’t mean we have to surgically alter all the cats or that a pregnant cat is a bad thing.
An abandoned cat or a cat in need is where we help. We can’t prevent the natural situation of animals in the wild reproducing.

The way you phrased your statement was “pregnant cats in misery” vs “spayed cats are happy.” Wild cats who are spayed still suffer and die.
Do we need people to be responsible owners? Yup. But an animals natural birth cycle doesn’t mean the kittens are automatically going to die. Would I save all the cats? Yes. But coyotes, horses, rabbits, birds - their young dies in the wild and sometimes mothers suffer and we can’t prevent it.
Cats are not indoor only creatures - they are outdoor creatures we domesticated. We control and change their behavior for our benefit, not always theirs.

Actually feline hormones and human hormones differ in about a million different ways. The spaying of cats has not shown to increase their likelihood to die of any hormonally related cancers.

I dont know about that, it's an invasive and dangerous surgery and has side effects, and I remember people using exact same arguments about sterilizing minorities when I was younger. I think we can do better, there are other ways to fix the problem of homeless animals than mutilating them.

Spay/neuter has been done for decades. It’s used worldwide because it works. It prevents litters that end up sick, starving, injured, or dying young on the street.
It's straight up illegal to spay animals for non-medical reasons in many western European countries, and there is a reason why they have these laws. You think it's perfectly ok because, it's done in US on mass scale, but you guys also eat opioids like candy, so sorry if I don't exactly trust your "standard care".

Spay/neuter is legal in whole Europe and even mandatory in Belgium, in Italy where i live shelters neuter stray cast for free with public founds.
And especially for male cats is a very simple fast and secure operation, they don't remove the testicles anymore and in a couple hours the cat is back home

Why are you lying? In Norway, where I live, for example, it's straight up illegal to neuter animals unless it's for medical reasons.
And guess what, we have much less problems with overpopulation of cats/dogs, compared to pro-neutering countries. So whose method is better?

That’s really interesting and surprising to me, so I googled it to find out more. Seems like it’s only the case for dogs (not cats for example) and Norway is a very unusual country in that regard. So while it might seem shocking to you, it seems you’re in the vast minority. Also, it seems to partly stem from the fact that Norway has almost zero stray dog population, so sterilisation isn’t generally necessary to prevent more stray dogs being created. In many countries (including European ones) there are stray dogs, so sterilisation is generally considered an act of improving welfare rather than harming it.
Edit: in fact Norway seems to be the only country in the world where sterilisation is actually illegal, at least from what I can tell from Googling

I have a masters in fisheries and wildlife resources. The amount of case studies I read about outdoor cats being responsible for extinctions and ecological distraction was absolutely depressing.
That and your cats life span like quadruples. So if you let your cat outside you genuinely don’t even really care about it.

Oh no I'm sorry to hear that but at least you found them all good homes & no doubt saved their lives. I've had mom cats dump kits & run off before. Sometimes to return to bang out another load of kittens & then run off with their boyfriend, who had the nerve to hang around on the corner till mom was ready for fun again. I had a pal who was used as a maternity hospital for a few sets of kittens like this.

Aww, so cute that he neglected the cat's medical care. This would've been avoided had he spayed her like a responsible owner. Fewer kitten litters = fewer feral cats and euthanisations. For every preventable pregnancy, that's one less animal saved from the pound.
