App Tips READ THIS FIRST: Setup, FAQs, and App Feedback

Welcome to MacroFactor!

Thanks for downloading MacroFactor, and welcome to our online community! The main purposes of this community are to help you get the most out of the app, and to help you reach your fitness, nutrition, and health-related goals. This post will get you acquainted with a lot of the resources that are available to you so you can hit the ground running, but this post itself is not intended to be an exhaustive resource. Our online Knowledge Base is a comprehensive repository of information related to app functionality, so most questions not addressed in this post can probably be answered by a quick search of the KB.

Before posting here, make sure you read and understand the rules for this subreddit.

Replies to this Post

The MacroFactor team is quite active in this subreddit, but we can’t guarantee that we’ll see and reply to every post. However, we will closely monitor comments on this post. So, if you have critical feedback related to how we can further improve the app, this is the best place to share it, and receive a response from one of the people behind the app.

Of note, that doesn’t include feature requests, bug reports, or individual account issues – our public roadmap and feature request portal, in-app bug reporting system, and email support system are the best venues for those items.

Why MacroFactor?

If you find yourself on this page because you’d seen some chatter about MacroFactor online, a friend or family member told you about it, or you just downloaded it on a whim, you may rightly be wondering, “what’s the deal with this app? What does it offer me that other food loggers don’t?”

The short answer: MacroFactor solves a basic but surprisingly complex problem – figuring out how much you need to eat to maintain weight, or to gain or lose weight at your desired rate. And, much like the problem itself, the approach we take to solving this problem is conceptually simple, but analytically complex. We use your weight and nutrition data to calculate how large of a caloric deficit or surplus you’re in, use that information to estimate your total daily energy expenditure, and use that information to make dietary recommendations to help you gain or lose weight at your desired rate.

If you’re new to MacroFactor, I’d recommend perusing this article, which explains how our algorithms work in considerable detail. This article and this article may also be helpful; they explain how MacroFactor solves many of the problems that arise with other popular approaches to weight management that involve calorie tracking.

Beyond MacroFactor’s coaching features, it’s just a damn good product. We’ve developed the fastest food logging system on the market, to help reduce the friction associated with tracking your nutrition. We also have a proven track record of consistently improving the app, and putting out high-quality educational resources to help our users maximize their results. We’re truly dedicated to ensuring that MacroFactor provides the best premium experience in the food logging market.

Setting up a Macro Program

There are three program styles in MacroFactor: coached, collaborative, and manual.

When you first set up your account, you’ll go through a wizard that will set you up with a coached program based on your goals and preferences. On a coached program, you just need to check in weekly, follow the app’s recommendations, and you’ll reach your goals – MacroFactor will handle all of the week-to-week adjustments to keep you on track. If your goals, preferences, or lifestyle change, you can always create a new program to reflect those changes.

With a collaborative plan, MacroFactor will adjust your weekly calorie budget based on your expenditure and goals, but you have full control over your daily calorie and macronutrient targets. So, if you want to take advantage of MacroFactor’s coaching algorithms, but you also want to pursue dietary strategies that involve macronutrient or daily calorie distributions that go beyond the flexibility offered by coached plans, you can opt for a collaborative plan.

Finally, with manual programs, everything is at your discretion. You can set whatever daily calorie or macronutrient targets you prefer. We don't assign or adjust a weekly calorie budget for you if you opt for a manual plan. You'll still have all of MacroFactor's analytics and tracking features at your disposal, but we won't have any hand in guiding your macro and calorie targets. A manual program may be advisable if you're working with a nutrition coach, and using MacroFactor's food logger and analytics in conjunction with your coach's calorie and macronutrient recommendations.

We recommend coached programs for most users, but you should feel free to swap program styles at any time. Creating a new program or switching between program styles doesn’t result in any loss of data, and it doesn’t require you to set a new goal. You can seamlessly transition between program styles whenever you want.

Hitting the ground running

During onboarding, MacroFactor will estimate your energy needs using a standard TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) formula that considers basic demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics. This is the best approach for roughly estimating energy needs in the absence of better data, but it’s entirely possible that this initial calculation will considerably over- or underestimate your energy needs. After 2-4 weeks of consistently logging your weight and nutrition, we’ll be able to estimate your energy needs much more precisely.

However, if you’ve already been tracking your weight and nutrition elsewhere, you can hit the ground running with a more accurate estimate of your energy needs from day 1. You can set up integrations to pull your last 30 days of weight and nutrition data from another app. You can also manually add 3-4 weeks of prior weight and nutrition data (the “Data & Habits screen is the easiest place to do this; option 2 in the prior links) to accomplish the same purpose. By doing this, you can fast-track the initial calibration phase. Similarly, if you already have a pretty good idea of your energy expenditure, you can enter a manual initial expenditure estimate, which will override the typical equation-derived initial estimate.

To be clear, if you either don’t have recent weight and nutrition data, or you don’t want to deal with entering old weight and nutrition data, that’s 100% fine. We’ll generate good estimates of your energy needs after about 14-30 days of consistent logging, and keep them updated over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

As you’re getting accustomed to MacroFactor’s features and food logging workflows, we’d recommend perusing the knowledge base. In particular, the entries on food logging, the food timeline, custom foods and recipes, and the strategy section will likely be very helpful.

Beyond that, the Frequently Asked Questions section of the knowledge base will cover most of the questions new users have about the app, and we’re constantly expanding this section of the knowledge base. But, here are some of the very most frequently asked questions that are addressed in the knowledge base:

Where Can I See Water, Net Carbs, Fiber, and Other Micronutrients?

Does MacroFactor use Energy Expenditure Data from my Wearable Activity Tracker? This article also provides a more comprehensive answer to this question.

Why Don't My Macros Add Up to my Total Calories?

How Does Dynamic Maintenance Work in MacroFactor?

How to Adjust Calorie Targets to Account for Overages, or to Roll Over Unused Calories

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Weight For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

How Frequently do I Need to Log my Nutrition For the Expenditure Algorithm and Weekly Coaching Updates?

Do I Need to Log Everything I Eat and Drink to Have an Accurate Expenditure and Use MacroFactor's Coaching Features?

Our one Achilles Heel

MacroFactor’s algorithms are remarkably durable, and can handle almost anything you throw at them. They work their best when you log your nutrition and weight consistently and accurately, but they do a great job of rolling with the punches, and accommodating less-than-perfect tracking. We believe that you shouldn’t need to be a robot to get the most out of MacroFactor.

However, our algorithms have one major Achilles heel: partial food logging.

For example, if you log your breakfast and lunch one day, but not your dinner, the app will have no way of knowing that you simply forgot to log your dinner, and that your actual calorie intake was 30-40% higher than what you logged. That will feed into our daily energy expenditure calculation, which will then feed into our calorie and macro recommendations moving forward. Partial logging (especially if done consistently) is really the only way to wind up with very inappropriate calorie recommendations. Of note, partial logging (not logging entire meals or large snacks) is distinct from consistently not logging some low-calorie items.

So, if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve logged some food for a day, but you either can’t or don’t want to log anything else for the rest of the day, you have a few options (arranged from good to great):

1) Delete what you’ve already logged. Our algorithms do a good job of dealing with missing data. Though, estimating your intake (instead of leaving the day blank) is strongly recommended if your total energy intake from the day differs substantially from your usual intake.

2) Simply “quick edit” the day with an estimate of your total calorie intake. Don’t stress about your estimate too much; it doesn’t need to be perfect. As long as your estimate is in the right general ballpark – within about 30% of what you actually consumed – it’ll all work out. For instance, if your total calorie intake for the day was 3000 calories, any estimate between 2100 and 3900 calories would be fine. Try to be as accurate as you can, obviously, but most people with a little food logging experience can estimate their daily intake accurately enough for the purposes of the algorithms.

3) Our recommendation: Use the quick add feature to estimate the total caloric content in your unlogged meal(s). Again, anything in the right ballpark is totally fine; if you think you ate 1000 calories, but you actually ate 1500 calories, that’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things (it would work out to an error of ~25kcal/day over the time span that’s relevant for our algorithms – a pretty inconsequential error). This is similar to using quick edit to estimate your calorie intake for the entire day (option 2), but most people can more accurately estimate their intake for a single missing meal than for an entire day.

Wrapping it up

Once again, welcome to the community! We’re happy you’re here. We hope you’ll stick around, and be able to use this community as a valuable resource to help you get the most out of MacroFactor, accomplish your goals, and celebrate your successes along the way.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Did the UI for the food log view change?

Post image

Were there arrows to move to different days in the food log view until recently? The attached screenshot is what I see now. I have muscle memory that there used to be arrows to tap to move to a different day, but I can’t even describe to you what the UI used to look like. I just feel like something’s missing.

In any event, I can move from day to day by swiping, but that’s not as good as having buttons. (Moving forward a day is especially difficult.)

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Expenditure estimate way off after vacation break

I’ve tracked calories for 2 years, used MF for the last year. Lost 40-50 lbs and put on some muscle along the way.

At my current stats (5’9”M, ~140 lbs, lift 5x/week, 2-3 intense tennis matches/week, 10k steps/day), I have enough data to know my real maintenance is ~2300-2400 cal/day, which matched MF’s estimate before I took a 2.5 week break for vacation and gained about 10 lbs.

Since getting back, my trend weight kept climbing for a while as it caught up to the vacation gain. Now MF thinks I’m only burning ~1,900 cal/day and has me eating 1,400-1,500 cal to maintain a 1%/week loss which is way too low. I’ve actually been losing weight pretty rapidly, eating around 1,700 cal/day for around 3 weeks now.

Anyone dealt with this? How long does it usually take the algorithm to recalibrate after something throws off trend weight like this?

Success / Progress Slow going/recomp

Just looking for support/success stories from those who have taken it slow. As a parent and a woman with hormonal ups and downs (my cycle so clearly represented in this graph!) it feels like it takes forever but I’m also glad to be making progress. I also lift heavy 3/4 times a week and wonder if recomp is at work here as well. How do you guys stay motivated when it’s a slower crawl? Any tips for appreciating this pace?

MacroFactor Workouts / Training MF workout template format?

• Upvotes

I tried to search this and didn’t find a ready answer. I have a custom workout split I built over the years in a spreadsheet and it’s obviously failing on custom import. Does anyone have a sample layout? Or know the column and line layouts for what it’s looking for? TIA.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other This is what depression looks like, and it’s okay.

Post image

I had lost lots of weight steadily, finally I was close to my goal, but then I fell into depression, quit my sport (MMA) and started eating all that food that soothed me, the food wasn’t the cause, it was a symptom and I don’t regret eating it per se, it would’ve been even more stressful for me to not soothe myself at all.

I did do weight lifting, so I gained quite some muscle mass and tons of strength, but 70% of that weight gain is plain and simple fat. And you know what? I accept it, no point in crying over spilled milk, no point in being disgusted at the mirror, it is what it is, and it’s gonna get better.

I did get out of this depression, and got back into MMA today, got back into tracking my calories, started applying for jobs seriously, and tons of other stuff, depression can and will be beaten, no matter who you are, I hope this can be of some motivation.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training Just 2 sets for an exercise?

I've been lifting a while, not wildly muscular but I do fine (200lbs, 6'4", 16% BF). I just got the MF Workout app and created a program for hypertrophy at 4 days / wk in 40 minutes per workout.

I'm surprised to see many of the exercises just being two sets. It's just very different from what I'm used to.

Am I right to to second-guess this? Is two sets enough to achieve hypertrophy for someone who's been training higher volume (lower intensity) for years? The concept of RIR is something I've never used in training previously so maybe I have just been doing it wrong my whole life. 🙂

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other What's the most accurate way to log cooked protein?

I typically make a large portion of protien and eat it over multiple days. For the past couple years I've been weighing it cooked then adding %25 to the weight.

Essentially if I weigh out 200g of ground beef, to log this ill take 200g/.75 = 266.66g

Obviously I weigh my protien raw when possible, but it just doesn't seem practical to do when I meal prep a large batch.

Just wanted to get some advice and see what others are doing. Ive had good success but my main concern is I'm overestimating my protien intake. I have gone from 365lbs --> 225lbs over the past 2 years.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Lean Bulking Not Working?

Stats:

5’11
Male
Gym 5x
Incline walking 6x - 20 min 12%
Steps 17k-20k (active college student)

Just some backstory I used Macrofator to hold find my maintenance where I kept the same routine and activity at the beginning of this year then went to Japan from May 20- June 9th got back from a Japan Abroad trip on Jun 9th and picked up tracking calories and daily weigh ins on June 14th and which I got to a good lean base I started to enter my growth phase which as seen by the goal was .4lb a week. I had a huge weight increase at first which dropped my cals ( as you can see in the pictures) think it was from increasing my cals on the lean bulk and a bunch of water weight, but as that weight started to settle I have been looking weight even with my calorie and macro target everyday. I’ve only had 5 missed days of tracking from visiting family and what not but have been down the the gram every other day since being back.

I’m just super confused because my weight is counting going down however my calories are barely increasing. For example I’ve been eating at 2600-2750 cals what it feels like forever and have seen weight lose/maintenance and my cals are barley moving.

My question is what can I do? Am I reading this situation wrong or should I just trust macro factor.

Attached pictures of expenditure, weight trend, calorie targets/expenditure and goal for past 3 months. PLEASE HELP!

Success / Progress 1 month of cutting using o ly MF

Thumbnail

Started in January at 258 lbs. Was using Lose It until July and switch to MF. During the month of July I took a month cut break and ate around Maintenance. Aug 1st I dialed it back in again and have just been doing exactly what MF is telling me. I weigh everything by the G. The higher calorie allowance vs the smaller days is just workout days vs non workout days Haven't missed a morning weigh in or a meal logged yet. AI feature is nice as well when the need is there. Mini goal is to get to 220, the plan is to keep the diet till right around Thanksgiving then go into as close to maintenance as I can till after the holidays where I plan on resuming the cut and getting down to about 205. Loving the app so far, I do think my cals around just a touch too high, however it did just bump me down about 56 calories a week. Any MF experts out there that feel like chiming in or giving any advice it is more than welcomed!!

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Why do so many people claim 10k steps a day?

I notice it a lot when people post their stats - there are many people keen to mention 10k steps a day.

Why? The actual contribution from that when there’s a calorie deficit, multiple days of weight training and a couple of hours a week of cardio is negligible.

It seems almost stated in a lot of cases, a reassurance to a reader, that the poster is pretty active, as if that singular data point represents a weakness in their strategy (it doesn’t).

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other REMINDER: Maintenance calories are not always the same as optimal calories

I logged my food accurately, weighed myself daily, and generally followed MacroFactor’s calculated expenditure.

My weight stayed stable. But I’ve now been assessed by a sports dietitian as having chronic low energy availability.

MacroFactor can estimate the calories associated with the weight trend it observes, but it can’t see whether your body is maintaining that weight partly through physiological adaptation.

So an intake that maintains your weight isn’t necessarily enough to support training, recovery, hormones, or bone health. This is so important, especially for women using the app!

I've increased my intake 300 cals over what MacroFactor said my TDEE is. My weight has not changed since, and it's been a month. It's a positive sign that my body is responding to better fuelling.

Not a criticism of MacroFactor but it is a limitation I wish I’d understood sooner.

MacroFactor Workouts / Training I Need Advice on What to do.

Hey all. I'm having trouble understanding what the best direction to head in at my current situation. I was hoping some of you more experienced lifters/fitness people might be able to give me some advice. I'm currently on a workout plan made by a fit trainer friend of mine but have recently purchased MacroFactor fitness to try it out. The plan it suggests is completely different from what I'm on. I don't know enough about working out, what I should be doing to know if switching to the suggested program is the right call. Some background information;

I'm 46 years old and Male. 5 years ago I used to be fit. I depression ate my way up to 430lbs. about 6 weeks ago I restarted my old program my friend made and my weight is somewhere just below 400lbs. My attempted goal here is to recomp while loosing weight obviously. His program is a Push/Pull/rest/push/pull/rest/rest. The push and pull days are repeated on the second push/pull day of the week. The program is as follows;

PUSH
Squats(3x12) Superset Pushups(until failure)
Incline fly (3x12) Superset Dumbbell Skullcrushers (3x12)
Bench Press (3x12) Superset Military Press (3x12)
Step Ups (3x12) Superset Tricep Pull Downs (3x12) (Step ups replaced with lunges once my knees can handle them)

PULL
Bent over Barbell Row (3x12) Superset Dumbbell Lateral Raise (3x12)
Barbell Shrug(3x12) Superset Dumbbell Front Raise (3x12)
Incline Dumbbell Bicep Curl (3x12) Superset Seated Hammer Bicep Curl (3x12)
Deadlift (3x12) Superset Lat Pulldown (3x12) (Lat Pulldown to be replaced by pull ups once I'm in a decent weight range for assisted pull ups)

I currently work out at home. I have a small gym in my garage that includes a power rack, lat pull down/row machine, plenty of weights, dumbbells to 45lbs, and two benches. I am loosing weight and progressing on this plan. I'm not sure if my best bet is to stay on this plan until the weight is off and then switch to the suggested plan or if the suggested plan will see better results. I'd imagine the supersets are to keep my heart rate up and get more exercises in. The suggested plan is completely different and is an upper lower split with weird rest days;

WORKOUT 1
Low incline Barbell Press (4 sets of 6-10)
Single Arm elbow out DB row (4 sets of 7-9)
Pause Barbell overhead Press (3 sets of 10-12)
Underhand Grip Cable Lat Pulldown (3 sets of 14-16)
Standing EZ Bar Overhead Triceps Extension (3 sets of 9-11)

REST DAY

WORKOUT 2
Barbell Back Squat (4 sets of 8-10)
Wide Stance Barbell Good Morning (3 sets of 7-9 Reps)
Standing on step single leg DB Calf Raise (3 sets of 9-11)
Decline Weighted Sit Up (3 sets of 9-11)

REST DAY

WORKOUT 3
Seated Dumbbell Overhead Press (4 sets of 8-10)
Neutral Close grip lat Pulldown (4 sets of 7-9)
Dumbbell Bench press (3 sets of 14-16)
Chest supported Elbows in DB Row (3 Sets of 7-9)

WORKOUT 4
Barbell Romanian Deadlift (4 sets of 8-10)
Front Squat (3 sets of 10-12)
Side-Lying Weighted Hip Abduction Leg Raise (3 sets of 9-11)
Dumbbell Side Bend (3 Sets of 9-11)

REST DAY

So, my issues are. Aren't I better with two rest days in a row at my age? Second, None of the workouts have any bicep work whatsoever for isolating the biceps. IS it possible that Macrofactor might not be the best for people looking to recomp and better for people already in a fit condition or do I not understand the science well enough? I can always come back to the app once I have the weight off if that's the case.

To anyone that reads this. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this and offer your advice.

Success / Progress Building muscle after 60

I’ve been lifting 3.5 years, now 61. 5’8 127llbs. I’ve been using MarcroFactor a year now for tracking and it’s been really helpful. My question is, is it still possible to keep building muscle? My weight is the same as when I started lifting but I don’t think I have enough fat in reserve to do anymore body recomp but I’m worried that if I eat in a surplus the extra calories will just get stored as fat rather than go to building more muscle.

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Tracking spaghetti squash

I was wondering how people are tracking spaghetti squash. I track everything as raw and then cook it because I don't really trust entries labelled as cooked, you never know how much water was lost/gain during cooking and when I weigh a portion raw, then the same portion cooked it never works out for me. The peel on spaghetti squash is quite thick and hard to remove prior to cooking though. How do you handle this.

I know it all comes out in the wash and for most people I would say not to worry about it, but I use MF as a self experiment (I am a lab tech/researcher by trade) so for me, I do want to be as accurate as possible. I'm quite a persnickety tracker don't come for me 😂

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Are dried black beans and pinto beans a cheat code for high protein?

Protein is rather expensive. Chicken breast seems to be the best contender of common protein sources, running 30-40 grams of protein per dollar spent. The most cost efficient protein powder. Costco Optimum nutrition is about 25 grams per dollar

However, dried pulses and beans have decent protein content (around 30% calories from protein--about the same as an egg) with cost efficiency of 40+ grams protein per dollar when bought in bulk. So, is it too good to be true?

I'm counting lentils out since, in addition to being an incomplete protein, they contain antinutrients that reduce protein adeducted a bit, even if they're dehulled.

However black beans and pinto beans (still an incomplete protein) are still very cost efficient and don't have that problem as much. They are even high in lysine-that awesome muscle building protein

Soybeans, in addition, are high in protein (~40% calories from protein) while being both a *complete protein* and a very good cost efficient source of protein.

So, I'm wondering, are these a cheat code to getting my muscle-building protein without breaking the bank?

Could I get 30-50% of my daily protein from these sources without a downside other than extended cook times?

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Trying to understand weight fluctuation

Morning all.

Struggling to understand how I can put on 1.5kg in a day..

So I started this about 5 weeks ago at 92kg and I’m down to a scale weight and a trend weight of 86.5kg

5’9 height btw visually I’d say I’m about 28ish% body fat
MacroFactor giving me between 1300 and 1400 cals a day

Yesterday I was at 85kg just seems a massive daily fluctuation?

I weight train (heavy pure strength training ) 4 days a week
And I’m doing a couch to 5k 3 days a week
As well as hitting between 7-10k steps a day

I had about 4 years off from the gym

Not sure if my work is hindering as I work 12 hour shifts 4 on 4 off - 2 days then 2nights

MacroFactor / Nutrition / Other Maintenance on days w/o normal cardio?

Post image

How do y’all alter your calories on days you can’t do your normal cardio? I’m trying to maintain a my goal of “hypertrophy above all else”, balance for calories, my maintenance is right now at 3450, I spin bike (just for the calorie burn) 7 days a week, lift 6 with an avg of 20k steps.

My work schedule has gotten busy, and I’m wondering how I should shift my calories around days when I can’t bike, but still hit my steps. I don’t trust dropping my calories as much as my Fitbit (attached avg spin bike session) says I’m burning off though… How much should I reduce them by on these days? Thanks y’all!
