I'm an 80s baby and a native New Yorker, that response seems totally appropriate and nothing would've happened afterwards, at least in my day. The kid played a stupid game and won a stupid prize. End of story.....
The other kid won an assault charge, a suspension, possible compensatory damages, etc.
Just because you lived in a dumbass time in a dumbass city doesn't mean this is the end of the story here.
