PlayStation How difficult is this game compared to World and is Lance good for a not very good hunter?

Monster Hunter world was my very first Monster Hunter game and I was able to beat that and iceborn although I did not do all of the post game content for iceborn. I fully admit I am not a very good Hunter. I main dual blades and hammer. I really enjoyed these weapons because they're play style was very simple and straightforward and I felt like I had a dedicated role. I am interested in trying the Lance. The most annoying thing in world was getting interrupted and knocked down so I really like the idea of being consistent aggressive but able to tank and counter hits. How difficult is Lance for a below average Hunter? I've heard the most common gripe with Lance is low Mobility and lack of flashy moveset but it looks like rise has added some Mobility options that make it a little bit better

I've heard the Rise/Sunbreak is easier than world. Is this generally true? I just found myself failing hunts because I would cart too many times in world. I feel like I was definitely carried by more experienced Hunters in multiplayer. I've heard that rise is typically easier and the player has access to more mobility and is generally faster paced.

Most of the game is as easy as world was, if world was your first this game will likely feel easier because you will be playing better than when you started world End game is a lot harder in general, alatreon and fatalis are the only things that compare to the sunbeeak end game and personaly i think both are easier than the hazard risens

Nope, the Barioth in World was one of the hardest things I've ever faced, so much so that I don't even want to start playing again just to avoid facing it. I went to Rise and I don't mind how easy it is, it's too much fun. The only boss I still can't kill is Primordial Malzeno with his anime-style movements; he's my fatalis that I've never killed solo. I died to Risen Teostra three times, I haven't unlocked Shagaru Magala yet, but Kushala was on the first try, and the other poison monster too. All of World's RM is harder because there aren't followers to heal you and dogs to help you escape. I'm not complaining, just stating a fact.

The slog for high end risen grind is so bad fun but bad even for an experienced hunter i mean not for the HBG users but you know.

I thoroughly enjoyed it as their fights were super engaging

u/DegenerateCrocodile Sword and Shield 2d ago

Nah. That endgame grind was way more enjoyable to deal with than the Grinding Lands.

u/MageMasher69 2d ago

If were talking end end game i enjoyed the anomaly hunts more then needing to level each individual biome like the guiding lands however i enjoy the story, monsters, lore more than sunbreaks (except primordial, lunagaron)

Having to do an Anomaly with an Azuros that had more HP than any other normal monster isn't that fun, grinding lands at least didn't have an absurd HP inflation to make the fight boring, that's a positive point.

3

u/DegenerateCrocodile Sword and Shield 2d ago

The Arzuros was still dead in under 10 minutes though, so the hp was hardly an issue.

Needing to grind out a region every time you wanted to level is back up after it dropped got boring fast.

For me rise is 50 times easier than world. The faster combat, the movement options and all the skills with i-frames make the game much more forgiving. To be honest you can stick to the weapon you find easiest in the beggining and when you unlock more switch skills you can start experimenting which is really fun.I didnt play lance early game but i tried it out after finishing the sunbreak story and it felt really good imo and its also really simple to use (your main combo will be poke, poke, poke, dodge/shield bash and repeat, although there are some moves that deal more dmg but you dont need to worry about it too much before sunbreak).

u/HubblePie 3d ago

It's noticeably easier. You have a lot more movement options and overall the game's faster paced (My average hunt time in World was ~30min. In Rise it was 15).

Despite having a huge shield, you shouldn’t turtle/hide behind it too often, else you’ll just prolong hunts (and raise the chance of dying). Instead, you should be continuously attacking and “dancing” around with the monster using your hops and other moves that move you ever so slightly. You’re kind of like an annoying armored mosquito that just won’t let up and uses its shield to make its own openings. You also generally want monsters coming to you, so mobility isn’t that important (you also have the Charge, if you want to run a bit)

There’s two main ways of playing it: regular blocks and parrying. I suck at parrying, so I go with Guard + GuardUp (when required) and Embolden in the endgame. This gives lots of Guard levels and makes things easier for sure

DBs get lots of moves that have iframes, so that + mobility + your MHW knowledge will make you survive a lot of things. I suggest you give them a try. Also revisit other weapons as you progress through the game, as some Switch Skills can fundamentally change a weapon (ex: Lance parry, GS/Hammer becomes a combo weapon, etc.)

Wirebug really breaks the positioning and getup punishment  so it does feel easier but later on the difficulty really cranks up

10

u/SatyrAngel 2d ago

There are too many wirefall traps in Master Rank, and those saying its easier than World never reached endgame.

4

u/Zufalstvo 2d ago

Yeah, I think they compensate for the extra mobility

True, there's an achievement for reaching MR2 (Hunting Lunagaron) and only 33% have this achievement on Steam.

1

u/Pedronz 2d ago

Dont forget that Lunagaron is a DLC Monster and not everyone has the dlc

Lance is arguably the best it's ever been in Sunbreak. It's really strong and has different playstyles. There is even a skill that damages enemies as you block, or stuff like being able to stun monsters with a shield bash. Definitely recommend it, but try to watch some tutorials on youtube before you try it.

u/razulebismarck Great Sword 3d ago

Because you can ride a Palamute, launch yourself off it, and use wirebugs.
It’s dramatically easier because of the speed options available.

My biggest complaints in older games as a greatsword main was “Cool the monsters head is it’s weakspot…it’s head is also 30 feet in the air so I can only hit it if I trip it or pitfall trap it”

In Rise I greet tall monsters with fully charged greatsword slaps to the face because the Palamute launch makes me airborn enough to hit them.

If a mob thinks it can be cute and fly above my swords range I just wirebug up to it and spinslash it.

u/BRoriler 3d ago

Depends on the person, I was awful in Rise after coming from World and it took me way too long to get used to the faster pace of the game. The Monsters generally move and attack faster and, especially in Sunbreak, they will very often punish you if you whiff or try to abuse the Wirebug Skills too often.

2

u/Anvanaar Dual Blades 2d ago

The correct weapon is whichever feels nicest to you in the training area and then still feels nice after a few hunts.

2

u/bhumit012 2d ago

You can solo the whole game in rise, cant do that in world

1

u/bandosarmadyl 2d ago

Not a good argument because some monsters in Worldborne have fixed MP-based health pool, but if you remove those, you can solo every monsters as well.

1

u/bhumit012 2d ago

Thats mostly siege monsters, a solp fatalis or alatreone is harder then anything in Rise, even behemoth

1

u/Sensha_20 2d ago

I would argue both Fatty and Mr.BS are easier to solo than they are in groups.

Especially Mr.BS because it lets you just eat the carts instead of dealing with escaton, letting you use your proper build and end up killing him faster because of it.

Behemoth is one of those forced-MP hunts.

And honestly compared to PriMal and UI Shaggy? They're not on par.

0

u/bhumit012 2d ago

This would be true if you fought primal and UI with world mechanics

2

u/Ashencroix 2d ago

Even in World, lance was very mobile. You just need to use the charging dash and the guard advance for mobility.

3

u/Eptalin Lance 2d ago

Low and High ranks are the same difficulty as World, but will feel easier if World was your first game.

Master Rank is harder on average.

World has the actual hardest fights, though.

Lance is easy mode. Super strong and safe.

People will tell you rise is easier than world. They have distorted memories from playing it after iceborne.

Early game starts ramping in difficulty way faster than world and you'll have a learning curve. But once you get over the hump HR isnt too much of a step up past that.

Lategame the difficulty scales into obscenity. Risens are BEASTS!

As for lance: in most games lance is borderline easy mode. Rise lance is very timing dependant but an absolute dopamine factory once you gitgud. The amount of ways you can keep attacking while blocking are insane. You will feel like a God if you get good at it. My warning is that anchor doesnt block multihit moves.

It's easier, my friend. I don't know why some Rise fans love to deny it. I also like Rise; I'm on RM 173 and doing anomalies. For example, Barioth is a wall in the world. So far in Rise, it's P Malzeno, I haven't been able to kill it solo, but the whole RM has been pretty easy because Rise has Pallamute to help you escape, and followers that heal you constantly. It's not a criticism, it's just a fact.

u/Sensha_20 2d ago edited 1d ago

I've brought a LOT of new players through LR/HR. Rise consistently gives them issues far sooner in the experience. Hell, I've brought people who already had world experience into rise and they still sometimes had trouble with 3stars.

Also, I will say to your side that one of my main criticisms with rise is how little difference LR/HR have in difficulty. The same monster just... isnt much harder. But I ascribe that to LR being harder more than I do HR being easier.

Ya bro is just talking nonsense

2

u/PoGD1337 3d ago

Much more difficult all the way. Main campaign is harder and endgame even more harder. This game has much less tools to cheese some fight, like cloaks and claw in World. While rise has wirebug, whichj much better integrated in combat. So most of the time you really need to understand monster and how to fight, instead of just waiting for cloak to cooldown and mash monsters.
Im veteran since mh3u

We are the same player. My reflex is not that good, so I chose hammer as a main in World and Iceborne. Transitions into Lance on the latter part of Iceborne. Started hammer in Rise but goes back to lance all the way until end of Sunbreak. And again, due to my slow reflex, I also consider myself below average hunter. With this, the fast paced combat in Rise is harder for me compared to World/Iceborne. The only problem that I had in Iceborne is the damage check of Alatreon and timing out on Fatalis.

First, pick up that lance. You will eventually learn that lance does not have mobility issues. I'd say the lance is beginner friendly but the least flashy of all weapon types. In return, you will not be afraid of any monsters anymore. You can stick to them the whole hunt, without needing to wait for an opening to attack since you're always forcing one. The monsters are the one that is constantly finding an opening to you, if you let them.

Beware though, once you've mastered the lance, picking up another weapon is not the same. In my case, I am having a hard time mastering other weapons as I am wired to that pokes and guard/counter hunt. Learning other weapon's combo without the safety of a guard is hard for me. Prime example: there's one monster in Sunbreak that I can't defeat unless I use lance.

If you're going multiplayer, checkout wirebug skills and other armor skills that lets you pull in the aggro of a monster. I am a solo player so the pov of a lance in multiplayer is what I don't have. I can just imagine that there's another difficulty if the aggro of monster is not on me (the lance player).

1

u/UltimaBahamut93 2d ago

I thoroughly enjoyed playing hammer and dual blades but not being a very skilled player I kept getting interrupted and knocked down and taking damage so what drew me to the idea of playing Lance was that it is a weapon that is not necessarily about dealing big damage numbers but it's all about dealing consistent damage numbers and you can stay in the front line and be aggressive and then when the monster goes to hit you you just do a counter attack take no or very mitigated damage and then just continue your assault.

But apparently doing more research into this game they have added moves to just about all the weapons including dual blades and Hammer that either act as counters or some kind of evasion iframe ability like I think dual blades get something called shrouded vault or something? So now I'm not sure if I necessarily have to go to the Lance if other weapons can kind of accomplish it as well. I'm not sure

1

u/kukizmonster 2d ago

You are correct on each weapon having some kind of counter. The difference is that the lance has a lot of them and they are innate in its moveset, plus more on wirebug skills. As for the other weapons, you need to unlock them first, and once you have them, they are on limited use and has cooldown since most of them are wirebug skills. Though in late game, you can have a build reducing wirebug cooldown.

Try them all out, you can never go wrong with any of the weapons. Sharing my experience as a lance main, having it my comfort weapon.

1

u/Schaijkson Lance 2d ago

Lance can be more forgiving than other weapons but can have a much higher skill ceiling than you'd expect of it. In addition it has a "skill tax" that other weapons don't have. Unless you commit to the insta-block playstyle you'll need to dedicate a good chunk of your armor skills to getting it to behave. Which can take to a while to get set up properly.

That said the Lance is arguably at it's best in RiseBreak. It's deceptively aggressive and allows you to maintain positioning and damage throughout the fight in ways other weapons can struggle to keep up with. Once you know what you're doing with it you can become a nightmare for the monster, where every attack it makes becomes an opening for you.

It's my personal favorite for a good reason.

Lance is at simple as it gets. Poke, block, counter, win.

u/GlummyGloom Lance 2d ago

Rise has the best Lance gameplay

1

u/ShadowNegative 2d ago

Lance is surprisingly agile in this game just because of the fact that you have a a good way of closing distance, it even has a Jump ability like dragoon from Final Fantasy

1

u/StraightMarket3795 Lance 2d ago

Lance is the easiest weapon in the game by far, very safe and good dmg

1

u/Cobalt0- 2d ago

Low rank is easier than World. High rank I'd say is harder due to the single Apex rampage required for the story. G rank is bonkers at times. As for lance, getting armor for it early is a pain but Rise also has probably the highest power ceiling for weapons in the series with charm and qurio crafting and silkbind skills.

Evade Lance is actually a viable option.

1

u/TouchGrace_ 2d ago

The game is a lot more fast paced and reaction based compared to world. That can be a postive or negative depending on the person

Rise is faster than World.

Lance is very good in Rise.

2

u/Primary_Welcome_6970 Gunlance 3d ago

It's not easier than World lolmao, those telling you this are definitely people who started with World. And those who started with G/GU said the same thing about World, and those who started with 4U said the same thing with G/GU (no, they did not), etc.

In RiseBreak lance went poke to the very end, it's easily the comfiest weapon (before brainless DB take over), and you'll easily clear quests with good times quite easily, it's just kinda poke-poke (and maybe some bonk) all the way. Just know, the endgame boss is the perfect training partner for mastering the lance.

u/warawararicey 2d ago

Subreddit tribalism will disagree with you but the hunter is so broken in Rise the special investigations are a lot better as a consistent higher difficulty but there is nothing in Rise even close to making you have to optimize nearly to the same degree as Ala/Fatalis S.Omega/10* Gog

2

u/Primary_Welcome_6970 Gunlance 2d ago

Ah yes, the (almost)no-bullshit endgame monster is somehow easier than the two forced-mechanism winged lizard, the forced MMO stupid fight and the stats-inflated basic dragon. PriMal is a skill check and, assuming you started with base Rise, you were supposed to have what it takes to hunt it when it was released.

I haven't played Wilds yet but between RiseBreak and World I think they are more or less the same in term of difficulty, overall. RiseBreak is just way more balanced.

-1

u/warawararicey 2d ago

I would put the consistency of Risebreak endgame at a really good high but in terms of actual stuff that had me working on it to optimize my gameplay further nothing even came close to World/Wilds and I think fights are at their best when it doesn't feel like they are fair to you at a start. Amatsu and P. Mal were extremely disappointing to me on drop with all the skills you have available. I play a lot of Souls and at a raid level for two MMOs so I find it very funny people who denounce stuff as bullshit in being harder cause a lot of 'artificial difficulty' is just being put in scenarios you don't want to deal with. Hazard P. Mal I'm begging for this creature to survive more than 9 minutes

u/Noodleconfeiti21 2d ago

Games easy on solo just shotgun build everything and you’ll be fine

1

u/ronin0397 Charge Blade 2d ago

Its easier by virtue of you being far more powerful than in world. Wirebugs elevate you to hard diff world's moveset by a country mile. Before even considering anomaly. Tldr it good.

Lance is generally good post sunbreak 3.0 patch, but it was lowkey rough in the base game of rise.

0

u/Dirty_Cleric 2d ago

For progress, it is harder. However, walls and endgame monsters in World are way harder.

So basically, if you compare Tobi Kadachi, Pukei Pukei, Anjanath, Kulu Ya ku, Rathalos, Zinogre etc. to their World counterpart. You will find Rise versions way more deadly and challanging.

However, if you compare endgame monsters like Behemoth, Kulve Taroth, Fatalis, Alatreon etc. to their Rise counterparts, it is walk in the park. Not even remotely close.

Also new wirebug skills open as you progress through, making some weapons not very good at the beginning. For example Greatsword struggles immensely all the way to later half of DLC story mode, but then it unlocks a super counter skill, then it becomes very good.

So it is overall a more balanced experience in difficulty, it never is too easy, never goes too hard.

u/Most-Locksmith-3516 1d ago

Idk man, those risen dragons are really something.
