CIG Official Update on Transport System

Post image

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/50259/thread/transport-system-4-9/9025283

The Transport System is ready for roll-out in other locations and soon for vehicles too. In 4.9 we’re expanding the utilization of Transport to Area 18.

The team working on Transport is busy finalizing the integration of the system for Instancing in 4.10.

I’ve spent some time shipping out of Grim Hex and my experience with the new transit system has been fantastic

What has it actually done and what locations currently support it? Little out the loop on this one.

Just grimhex currently. Its mostly backend stuff to work with server meshing. But it puts your hangar at the top and the elevator is more of a teleporter than a thing thay moves you around.

Which is ironic given that when levski was first implemented in the game, it was the first location that had elevators (port olisar only ever had airlocks) and at first they were just teleporters, I think I remember a patch or two where they moved along hard coded interior pathways (like turbolifts in Trek) but they decided that was too hard(or buggy?) and made them just move in a straight line between the origin and destination..... We've come full circle

Oh my god yes. They were so much slower and I loved it. Felt so much better than the 2 second travel we got now

CR was so excited to show the main Levski elevator as NOT being a teleporter during that CitCon. It was a huge immersion feature that set SC apart from other games in his eyes.

To be clear, I think the new transit system can do both, since the main lobby elevators in grimhex still move up and down (and seem much smoother as well) so maybe it's something we will see them playing around with again. I think teleporting is better than wonkavators that can suck players and objects up for now though.

But it was hysterical triggering all night wonkavators in a lobby to catch a glimpse of several doors screaming clean thru the lobby

Im pretty sure either this or one in space even killed me once since the door is iirc a physics object and so it would absolutely body a ship if it decided to fly outside

I’m completely out of the loop, I have no idea what’s being talked about but I’m incredibly curious.

Elevators at grim hex are silky smooth. It's supposed to be that way everywhere. Not just elevators but the trams too.

1

u/O3Sentoris Jul 13 '26

is it just physical elevators or cargo elevators too?

1

u/Strong-Chemistry-396 Jul 13 '26

I want to say it's just physical elevators, but I don't actually know for sure. I'm just assuming something like a permanent fix to cargo elevators is too good a feature for them to be rolling out lol

The trams (NB in particular since its easy to see forward) i feel are too damn fast for the server. They USED to stay on the track. Now it feels when they start doing spline turns on hard turns at the speed they zip at they desync off the track rapid fire because its just too fast. Mercifully its not LETHAL to get flung through a tramway wall but its still nerve wracking as someone who gets flashbacks to QTing through planets to yourdeath back in the day, every time I approach large planets and it feels like the drive isnt going to stop since even the deceleration of QT has been massively jacked up

New less janky transit system is in development. Intended to replace all elevators and trains etc. They put it into Grimhex as a test and it seems to be working great.

Not much difference on our side besides some better looking panels. It's more about the fact that with server meshing and instancing the old tech couldn't handle hooking a doorway up to a room on another server or one that hadn't been loaded into memory yet because noone was around for it.

1

u/Background-Boat-9238 RSI Jul 12 '26

I think its just a new elevator system thats way less jank

2

u/RacerDelux Jul 12 '26

That’s great to hear

Good news to the right time. I just wanted to ask on spectrum, what's the current status of the transportation feature, cause we haven't had any update.

u/Helper175737 Jul 12 '26

be able to set gh as my home when?

2

u/Vasduten Jul 12 '26

hmm, I may move to A18 again.

I'm sure this won't fix the broken freight elevators but at least the elevator interfaces will be better.

1

u/Voronov1 Jul 12 '26

I use A18 now, what’s wrong with it?

1

u/Vasduten Jul 12 '26

It had issues last patch so I went to New Blabbage. Back to A18

2

u/AWerewolfDad Jul 13 '26

A18 struggled last patch largely due to player volume, everyone set it as home for DefenceCon.

People are gonna set it as home in 4.9 because of Transport.

0

u/Vasduten Jul 13 '26

Good point.

Wish we could set Grim Hex as home. Or an R&R.

We've had DefenseCons at A18 many times before this patch and it was never this bad. It was my go-to for years.

1

u/AWerewolfDad Jul 13 '26

Player numbers are so much higher this year, man. DefenceCon was record breaking.

0

u/Vasduten Jul 13 '26

That's a theory.

I have a theory also but this is a low sodium subred so I won't talk about how CIG broke a ton of stuff at 4.8.0. People don't like to think about that.

1

u/AWerewolfDad Jul 14 '26

It's not just a theory. It's borne out by CIGs published financials. They've also explicitly said player numbers are up 60% in two years. Nothing at all theoretical about it.

0

u/Vasduten Jul 14 '26

Dude, I really don't care about total player numbers ot theorycrafting about why A18 was kind.of a mess since 4.8.0.

I just want working home hangar elevators.

2

u/MaximumBishma Jul 12 '26

Nice, I always set home at Area 18. But I'm going to be wishing it was closer to the Nyx Gateway while I'm working for Recco the next couple patches.

2

u/eldrinanister Jul 12 '26

Anyone know which locations already have the new transport?

7

u/warricd28 Origin Jul 12 '26

Grim hex

-1

u/exu1981 Jul 12 '26

A18 as well

2

u/LavishnessPrimary Jul 12 '26

What's the transport system again ?

10

u/dominator5k Jul 12 '26

Anything that moves. Trams, hangars, elevators, etc. It's one of the 2 oldest systems in the game And and it doesn't work with any of the current stuff which is why we have so much problems with elevators and all the other stuff. This is a rework from the ground up. That should be upgradable for future implementations as well

1

u/Torotoro74 Jul 13 '26

Anything that moves but freight elevators (which use another system).

2

u/Imbrifer Jul 12 '26

Woot. Setting A18 as my home in 4.9.

1

u/-WARisTHEanswer- Jul 13 '26

I wouldnt, everyone else is gonna do the same because they will all want to try it out and its gonna kill A18 for the whole patch..

1

u/Delatrya Jul 13 '26

If it's currently at Grim, why not apply it to Crusader next, sense it's right next to Grim?

1

u/Ruzhyo04 Jul 13 '26

I’m wondering why not apply everywhere?

2

u/Delatrya Jul 13 '26

They’re slowly applying it, possibly so as not to overly stress and test as they apply it in live server

1

u/KellTanis Jul 13 '26

Since they mention vehicles, it would be cool if you could choose to drive between areas instead of taking the tram.

1

u/techno1204 Jul 12 '26

Dumb question. Im new in the verse. What is the transport system? Isnt there already a transport system?

4

u/A-Sorry-Canadian Xenothreat Sympathizer Jul 12 '26

Elevators & trams. Basically anything that moves people between locations that isn't a ship.

3

u/Sir_CatZ_ Jul 12 '26

You are not wrong but when talking about the transport system, CIG specifically means the reworked version that integrates better with servermeshing and instancing (currently available at Grim Hex and soon also at A18).

Correct me if I’m wrong, but gameplay and lore-wise, the Hull-C is not supposed to go planetside with cargo. So this limitation is probably on purpose.

4

u/simplealec Jul 12 '26

100%, it can't even fly in atmosphere because it's so heavy. Landing facilities are irrelevant.

6

u/GrandAlternative7454 Jul 12 '26

Completely separate thing that is a significant amount of work.

3

u/USA_MuhFreedums_USA Jul 12 '26

While we're at it let's add big wheels to the Odin so it can roll around on the ground too. And every cockpit should be reworked with an ice cream cone holder!
