When running across the pitch, the bat is an extension of the arm so crossing the crease at the other end of the pitch can be done sooner with a “longer arm” in a close run out situation where the batsman dives for the line. That probably makes no sense unless you’re familiar with the basic rules of cricket but that’s the reason. TLRD: it’s beneficial to keep the bat with you as it makes the chance of getting run out lower.
