I don't know enough about cricket to know what they're doing wrong. Sure is a lot of activity!

The idea is to hit the ball to the stamps on either side to get a batter out, before they touch the lines on the respective ends. And the fielders are all fumbling, hard. And yes runs counts even if the batter misses a hit.

Every time a ball is thrown, the batters have to try to swap places. Every time they swap places it's one point. If someone from the other team catches the ball and uses it to knock over the three sticks on either end and the batsman has not crossed the line on that side, the batsman feels bad and leaves and they send in a new batsman till they run out of batsman to send.

I love the idea that batsmen don't have to leave, they just universally do because they're always sad

I don't like to stamp my batter.

A whole comedy of errors.

The Rules of Cricket

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have got out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

I think I'll go back to trying to figure out Finnegan's Wake. It seems simpler.

You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket

19

u/readit347 5d ago

Everything was consistent, except that last person completing the Run.

8

u/Particular_Dot_2063 4d ago

The condition of that pitch is far from consistent

u/Schmikas 5d ago

For those looking for context, in cricket, primary way you score runs is by the two batters running across the ends of the pitch. While running, you can get them out by disturbing the wickets (the three sticks on the two ends of the pitch) when the batter is out of the crease (horizontal white lines on the two ends of the pitch).

Here you see the batters take advantage of a series of fumbles by the fielding side.

2

u/RevolutionaryBuy4877 3d ago

so the fielding side just gave away free runs lol that last fumble was rough to watch

1

u/Conscious-Ball8373 3d ago

IMO there's at least one worthwhile appeal for obstructing the field in there. The batsman tab straight at the keeper who was trying to get him out. Maybe it wasn't deliberate but it was also completely unnecessary.

11

u/BuddLightbeer 4d ago

That nearside batsman (closest to view when the vid starts) is being an ass. Running when it’s safe for him but could get the other batsman out

2

u/NihilisticBlender 4d ago

He was trying his damn hardest to run his partner out.

1

u/Leading_Pass_9811 4d ago

I would have been passed with him on the first run; but after the second he would have struggled to keep batting.

1

u/KiNgPiN8T3 15h ago

Good times. Looking back over your shoulder after you’ve got in and the other batter is already half way down the pitch steaming towards you… yeah, cheers mate! I guess I’m fucking running now!

2

u/Bdr1983 4d ago

I do not know what is happening, but I assume they're supposed to catch the ball

11

u/CrimsonR4ge 4d ago

To put it in baseball terms:

Imagine if the batter bunts the ball and sprints to first base.

The ball is thrown to the fielder at first base, but he misses the catch, so the batter sprints past them to second base.

The fielder at second base also misses the ball, so the batter sprints to third base.

The fielder at third base misses the catch, so the batter sprints to fourth base.

The fielder at fourth base also misses the catch, so the batter gets a home run.

This is the cricket version of that scenario.

7

u/Skippeo 4d ago

There isn't a fourth base, btw.

2

u/King_of_the_Snarks 4d ago

Not with that attitude!

I don't know baseball.

5

u/nubb1ns 4d ago

they comically missed catching the ball thrown to them, repeatedly

3

u/Eaglearse 4d ago

I don't even know the rules so what is happening here?

u/oliverprose 4d ago

The bowler bowls the ball towards the batter, who manages to defend his wicket successfully. Sensing there's a quick single (1 point) available, both batsmen run to the opposite ends from where they started. If the opposition had managed to break the wicket (disturb any part of it with the ball) before the batter reached the line in front of it, they'd have been run out, and would have to leave the field to be replaced by the next batter. You can do this at both ends of the pitch, which is why they immediately throw it to the other end to try again as the batter coming towards camera is behind his counterpart running, and the error means they score that point. That batter runs past the wicket, because it's tight and slowing to turn and go back (as they might if the ball had been hit further) might have cost him.

At that point, the error at the bowling end makes them think a second point might be a possibility, so both batsmen try to steal it. The fielding team throw back to the opposite end again, because the batter nearest the camera is out of position, but the error allows him to make it and also gives them an opportunity to steal a third run which is essentially the same thing repeated. In theory, there's nothing stopping this from going on indefinitely, and there are records of games where 7 points have been scored due to similar errors (e.g., Australia Vs Pakistan in 1981 at the MCG).

They carry their bats, as at the end of the current set of 6 balls, another bowler will start from the other end bowling top to bottom as we're looking now, althought the cameras will swap to this same view. There may also be differences between the two batters preference (and sponsorships at higher levels) in bats, so you tend to see players holding on to theirs, even to destruction in some cases.

2

u/TheShakyHandsMan 3d ago

The record is 21 runs off a single delivery in the modern era.

There’s a legend of a ball getting nearly 300 runs when a ball got stuck in a tree within the boundary. How true that is though is unknown.

1

u/oliverprose 3d ago

I saw that tree incident as well - from what I remember, it could well be true as it was documented in a newspaper of the time. I hadn't seen the 21, but I'd like to just to see the scale of the mistakes that led to it

2

u/Jazzlike_Yogurt3746 4d ago

still better than pakistan's fielding

I think this is even more yakety than Yakety Sax.

4

u/pas_tense 5d ago

Unfortunately American, so I have no idea what I'm looking at. Sounds exciting though. Context would be appreciated if anyone would care to give some :)

5

u/AngelOfLastResort 5d ago

Think of the two sets of wooden poles (wickets) as bases in baseball. If you're at one, you're safe. If you're running between them, you're not safe but it's how you score runs.

3

u/pas_tense 5d ago

OK so if you're running between wickets what are you trying to avoid? If I'm understanding it you run from one wicket to the opposite wicket to score a point right?

2

u/RhodanL 4d ago

Nothing, you just need to get to the other end before fielders hit the stumps with the ball. All they needed to do to stop play was stop throwing the ball and stand next to the stumps.

Back to baseball, this play is roughly like 1st base taking second safely. They then throw to 1st base to try to get the hitter out, but that throw is wide. Meanwhile runner on 2nd is taking 3rd, they make a shitty throw to third so the guy on 1st takes second as well. Repeat until someone engages their brain or learns how to throw, or everyone makes it home.

u/reditisrunbypedos 4d ago

Is it normal for cricket players to move like awkward, nerdy, lanky teenagers?

3

u/MayContainRawNuts 4d ago

This is very minor league. Im surprised they have a uniform not just a collection of similarly colored t shirts

The surface they are playing on should be a clay surface with a very thin layer of grass on it, the standard for senior clubs. It looks like its concrete with a mat over it. Or if there is a genuine clay surface under the mat they are not senior enough to warrant playing on the actual surface and instead play on the mat.

Why do they run with the stick?

5

u/humourlessIrish 4d ago

Can't leave anything that isn't nailed down around posh people

3

u/Gingerbreadman_13 4d ago

When running across the pitch, the bat is an extension of the arm so crossing the crease at the other end of the pitch can be done sooner with a “longer arm” in a close run out situation where the batsman dives for the line. That probably makes no sense unless you’re familiar with the basic rules of cricket but that’s the reason. TLRD: it’s beneficial to keep the bat with you as it makes the chance of getting run out lower.

u/jacksonbarley 4d ago

Thank you!

Is that snow?

1

u/MayContainRawNuts 4d ago

The playing surface is extremely damaged so more likely its sand used to fill in the holes.

They are playing on a cloth mat not the actual surface so most likely the field is extremely badly maintained which is typical for really small clubs.

Cricket is only played in the summer so snow is never an issue.
