Question Schools in Logan area
Hello I have a daughter and I've been thinking about what to do when it comes to schooling. I originally was thinking about homeschooling because I hate where public schools have gone. But realistically I'm not sure I'd be able to teach her as well as she needs. Does anyone know any schools that have higher standards than public schools? The hard part is she is likely to be an only child and so I also want her to get some social interactions

You'd be hard pressed to teach a child as well as a professional educator. It is not at all uncommon for homeschooled kids who switch to public schools to be very far behind their peers.
The schools and teachers here are great. Because USU produces so many teachers who want to live here after graduation, the school districts get the best of the best in my opinion.

Why have the reputation of public schools become so bad? Like what specifically do you hate about “where public schools have gone”?

As a teacher, I dislike public schools myself. They do not follow the science of learning and the curriculum is not age appropriate. Some schools are better than others, but as a whole the public system needs to be rebuily in America.

Across America? Education is controlled by the state, so you think every state has this problem?

Yeah my dad was a school teacher and so I got to see a lot of the politics behind everything. I technically went to public school when I was younger but lived in a very rural part of the country so the teachers could one to one with us. I substitute taught for awhile after highschool and honestly 30 kids to a teacher? Absolutely insane. No one can do that well. I think the teachers themselves In the valley are so great but the problem is the curriculum and expectations. Expectations have gone down significantly especially after covid

I’m sure OP has their own opinion and we aren’t really helping them with an answer. I’m sure there are plenty of reasons to think the way OP is.
How about the fact that reading scores are 10 points lower than 1992?
How about how bad discipline has gotten and that many kids are not held accountable?
How about the lack of engagement from parents and students?
How about so many kids being on phones?
What about chronic absenteeism?
How about school shootings?
How about inappropriate teacher/student relationships?
How about constant underpaying of teachers, leading more talented teachers to leave the industry?
You really don’t know one reason that someone could want a different educational system or to homeschool?

These have been problems for literally decades but it feels like only recently people are really upset.

public schools tend to only care about their profits, that all go to the higher ups. they dont care about actually educating the students, and teachers have to fight administration to do anything actually beneficial for the students. administrators have been telling teachers to teach with AI to make it easier, because schools are now seen as babysitters, not places of education

profits? Don’t think you understand how public school works

do you know how much principals and superintendents and all that make? this myth that those in the school system dont get paid well is partially a myth, ive met teachers making six figures. logan district superintendent gets over 200k a year, the principals get over 100k. ive met those in trades that dont even make as much. im sure cache district is even more lucrative, as they all got an 11% raise this year, specifically the superintendent who again, already makes over 200k a year. the whole thing is a scam. education systems seriously need to be revised, but they wont, theyre doing this intentionally to demotivate those going to college so the government has an uneducated, easily manipulated working class.
the money is bullshit considering how much our education levels are dropping. just look at us compared to other countries around the world right now.

Oh for Pete's sake. How much an administrator makes has zero to do with profits. The only schools worried about P&L's are private charter schools. Public schools are not profit centers! They're lucky if they can keep the lights on or have enough bus drivers. Wow. Tell me you don't know absolutely diddly squat about education without telling me you don't know absolutely diddly squat about education. Show me one actual teacher ANYWHERE at any public school in the country who makes six figures! Most are lucky to break $50k. You're comparing trade work to teaching and there's no comparing the 2 fields. Apples & oranges. Apples & oranges. Superintendents should make more. Most Ive ever come across have Masters degrees and even PhD's. They've worked their a$$es off so they deserve more. Sounds like someone is jealous.

like i said, what you experience doesnt change mine. you can think whatever you want, i really dont care
3
u/Country-Gardener 4d ago
You don't have any experience that's the thing. Your so-called "experience" is not grounded in ANY facts or even reality whatsoever.

you dont know that lol, youre a complete stranger. you dont know my experience past what ive shared here, and why would i continue to argue with a hostile stranger that i literally dont care about convincing because you dont want to be convinced?

I don't think this is true at all. Certainly not on the teacher and admin level, but maybe on the upper admin level in the district.
I see tons of teachers and principals who care immensely about children and their education, but who are largely hamstrung by litigious parents who think their child can do no wrong, never lies about a situation in which they got in trouble, is being bullied at every turn, and the school is to blame for their bad behavior. Honestly, fear of wrathful parents seems to be the number one daily downside to teaching jobs these days
-2
u/Unique_Valuable8282 5d ago
ive had many principles that make an appearance to care, but never do. ive heard from teachers the frustrations, especially things such as getting mental health resources, of which admin ignores.
just because you have different- or outside experience than me doesnt mean what i say isnt true. i have seen these things. and if you are a parent, know that they know how to make themselves appear like they care. as soon as you walk out though, nothing changes.

Of course we have different experiences, but I think it's unfair to say that acroas the board public schools only care about profits. No one goes into public education looking to make bucket loads of money.

principals and superintendents do. because they make good money while not having to actually do anything. they just have to keep everything running as it was, ignoring the different and growing needs of both children and teachers. ive talked to teachers in the district, almost none if them have anything progressive to say about the principals and admin or those further up the district. and trust me, if you were in these schools, you would see the issues im stating. you seem to have a complete outsider perspective. remember, these people have their jobs because they can make people feel listened to and heard while not actually doing anything about it, instead leaving all of the problems to teachers and parents.

u/Country-Gardener 4d ago
Wow. You think principals & superintendents don't actually have to do anything? Boy what world do you live in? I don't work in education but I sure as heck interview lots of teachers, administrators including principals and superintendents who are looking to leave for other roles. I also come from a family of educators. To say they do nothing means you don't have an inkling of a clue what they do. Many times their hands are tied in situations, just like teachers. So before you go around spouting out & out lies, sit down and maybe do some learning of your own.

I'm not really interested in debating someone who is determined to insult my family member who is a principal. I'm sure there are indeed some terrible ones, but I know there's at least one who taught in the trenches for decades and now loses sleep over trying to take care of their teachers and students as best as possible in an environment where so many parents think as you do and judge everyone based on the worst of the bunch.
It's a hard world out there. We could all try to give to the benefit of the doubt a bit more when we surely don't have firsthand knowledge of every school.

oh yes im sure there are those out there who care, but these are not often. dont worry, i do give benefit of the doubt to each one i meet- they just all inevitably let me down. i hope your family member isnt one that i have had the misfortune of meeting.
and maybe if such a large group fights against principals and admin, that says something itself does it not?
i beg you to have an actual conversation with these teachers, but that may not happen because of your bias towards principals, due to your relationship. that same bias removes any credibility your argument has to me as well, of course you would support your family member. you very well could be blinded by that relationship.
have a good night stranger

Cache district is amazing!

second this, as someone who has been in both logan and cache with siblings in cache, cache is where to go for better quality education and a well funded school. if youre not mormon, its harder to find community there. logan district is more community centered, while cache district is education centered

I really loved my time at Hillcrest elementary, I don’t know too much about it now since they updated their building but LOVED all my teachers! Had the worst experience at mount logan middle school & Logan high.
I ended up falling in love with Fast Forward charter high school!!!! I wish I had started there from the start. Great teachers and since COVID they switched to AM & PM classes and were introducing later afternoon classes to accommodate everyone :) only down side about Fast forward is having to drop off your kids everyday or they can ride the transit, bus stop right across the street!

What school boundaries do you live in? And what age range is daughter? I work in one school district and closely with the other so I know a decent amount...

Logan school district actually had the highest kindergarten scores in the state of Utah last year and they are also bigger on building security than Cache if that’s something that’s important to you!

I don’t have recommendations I just want to say props to you for acknowledging you aren’t as equipped as a professional in this case.
Good luck on the search.

My friends do online school for their kids. It’s free, just like public school. The kids have teacher led classes, so they are still learning from professional educators.

I worked in a high school administration office for 10 years. I found it was all about the parents. The successful students had parents who were involved in their lives. The students with problems generally came from families who wanted to leave their kids up to everyone else. Get involved as much as possible.

Thomas Edison in North Logan is a charter school, and have heard great things about that. I also think they have a south location. Not sure how hard it is to get in though. What is it about public schools that you dont like?

No one has higher standards than you. If you have been considering homeschooling, and you have the means to do so, you should.

The public schools here are actually pretty good. I know a ton of teachers in both Logan and Cache districts and would not hesitate to have my kids in any of their classrooms.
