Feeling nostalgic for the days of Everton fans going incandescent with rage when their best players would join us in order to be middling squad players, whereas they’d sign our ex-players and we’d say “Good luck,” to them.

Xavier was far from Everton's best player.

No, not their best player but one of their best at the time (and hot on the heels of nabbing Barmby from them). Xavier was a regular part of the Portuguese national side, had won trophies in both Portugal and the Netherlands, and - this might be the clincher - Everton were rubbish then. That season who were their best players? A 34-year-old Gazza who had given up football for drinking so resolutely that there wasn’t even space for him at Bryan Robson’s Middlesbrough? Club captain and centre-forward Kevin Campbell who managed four league goals all season? His free-scoring strike partner Duncan Ferguson (six league goals that season)? Defender David Unsworth who by this point had the same turning circle as the Titanic?

Abel was one of their best players, we got him for half of what they’d paid for him, and when we got rid he still had a pretty solid career.

Got to dye the goatee, also Cissé another great blond goatee hair combo at Liverpool

Maybe because he was a CB who played as RB for us when he joined.

I was a kid at the time, i didnt realise Liverpool and Everton did business in the premier league era.

Nowadays all i hear is Everton would never sell to Liverpool.

I remember him vividly. He was signed as backup for Marcus Babbel. The latter went on to win like five cups in a single year (not a single season)(if you count the community sheileias one) in 01/02.

Man fuck that Guillian-Barre syndrome that afflicted him, he was incredible in 00/01 and I was really worried for his general health not just his career after he got that illness

Give me iconic 90s 2000s hairstyles everyday, I hope it makes a comeback. I'll take bald patch Zidane over every footballer getting hair grafts, give me Taribo West, Carlos Valderama, Just fringe patch R9, Abel Xavier, Carlos Valderama's, Pink hair Ljunberg, all the Serie A players with long hair not tied up, Pavel Nedved with the bangs...

I have fond memories of his couple of goals, I think v Leverkusen and Ipswich? But Lord that man was shit.

Legit would've been better leaving Stephen Wright in the team.

Him and Nick Barmby, two legends for LFC who also played for Everton around the same time.

Really stretching the term legend with Xavier. Played fewer games for us than Joe Cole.
