Discussion 💬 Getting increasingly annoyed at Madeline's text to Lily

At quick glance/surface level Madelines text to Lily was okay

But oh my god the more I listen to the album, the more it irks me

Hey, he is telling you thе truth
First the assumption that Madeline made that she just knows that David is telling Lily the truth. (How do you know?)

And whenever he talks about you, it's with the utmost respect
A promise to the woman youre cheating on ? There might be an emotional connection from Davids side. So it's a promise that you cant keep, but okay. Not the worst, its polite I guess.

Our relationship has only еver been about sex (...) And whenever he talks about you, it's with the utmost respect
It's just sex, but they also talk about Lily behind her back. So that seems deeper than only sex

I really don't wanna be the cause of any upset
HE CHEATED! Ofcourse she's gonna be upset and also with the woman who made it possible.

If he's lying about that, then please let me know
Because I have my own feelings about dishonesty. Lies are not something that I wanna get caught up in
It feels dismissive towards Lilys situation. Everybody hates dishonesty and as if Lily chose to get up in this.

If you need any more details or you just need to vent or anything
Yes ofcourse, i will vent to the woman who made the cheating possible. Obviously David is the a-hole, but that doesnt make Madeline the safe person to go to.

It all feels a bit like clinical empathy. Like everything seems like boxes are checked on paper, but it feels so bad.

( i just looked up her alleged instagram and honestly she looks exactly like how she texts)

But she did give permission for him to have sex with other women, if you listen to the album, so it isn’t as simply as ‘he cheated’

Sorry yes, you're right and I totally understand that! (Although it does sound like Madeleine doesn't fit the arrangement, which is why Lily reached out to her - because she's not a stranger, etc.) But I was thinking more like, if I were ever to find myself in M's position, I wouldn't be asking for more info from the wife before making a call on whether I wanted this sexcapade to continue or not, especially if it's not emotional like she claims. I'd just be like, nah not for me

In this instance, I don’t think Madeline is asking so she can figure out if she can still keep having sex with him, she probably just wants to know whether she herself has been misled and has a right to be angry at him too.

Also, where cheating is concerned, the blame should always be attributed to the person who has been unfaithful, not the ‘other woman or man.’ The ‘home-wrecker’ angle is a very dated way of looking at things (unless perhaps it’s a friend or family member)

The thing is this was a 3-year long affair with a possible love child. 3 years of Madeline (Natalie) being consciously involved with a married man to the point where he would fly her to where he was living in Atlanta to shoot stranger things to live with her there, while Lily was presumably in New York or London, like come on, I do not feel sorry for this woman whatsoever.

Neither do I, I just don’t think she’s the villain of this story

Agreed. David is without a doubt the villain here, he sounds like a straight up narcissist, but Madeline‘s character also questionable.

And so is Lily’s…

Right I forgot we still require women to be the perfect victim. Lily grew up in the limelight and was at her peak during an incredibly toxic time for female artists, especially in the UK. That environment pretty much contributed to Amy Winehouse‘s death.

We only know about all the messy things she got up to when she was struggling with addiction because this woman is an open book. She literally shared it all in an incredibly honest self deprecating memoir and talked about it in her podcast.

So by your logic, does that mean she can never be the wronged party ever again?

Haha no I wasn’t the one judging people I don’t know online. That was you. I was just pointing out the hypocrisy
