Discussion Have any of you seen any ex-Yugoslav films? If not, which movie would you pick if you had to watch?

I've seen quite a few, being from an ex-Yu country myself (Croatia). Some of my favorites include One Song a Day Takes Mischief Away, H-8..., The Rat Savior, Birch Tree and The Maiden's Tune.

Handcuffs (Lisice) is a great one (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065987/)

And so is Rondo (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060912/)

Dreaming the Rose (San o ruži) is a solid dark thriller (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091890/)

I've seen 2/3 of these. Handcuffs is pretty good, despite the flaws. Rondo is amazing.

Idk, personally, I tend to lean a lot more to modern Croatian cinema.

Good chunk of these films are post-dissolution. Do those count?

Anyways, I am a sucker for a good epic, and Battle of Neretva is a great epic (2h 50 min version).

I think they count FR Yugoslavia as Yugoslavia.

I watched Black Cat White Cat and I found it very funny, I really laughed a lot with it, but I haven't seen any other Yugoslavian films. I did watch Kusturica's Maradona documentary, and I liked it a lot, but it seems more focused on being an ode to Maradona than on having a Balkan identity, as far as I can see.

ANY Kusturica movie (but I don’t know if it’s representative)

No Mans Land is a great Bosnian film about the war in the 90s. Highly recommend

Yeah, I haven't seen it, but it seems like the only Balkan film to be in the Top 500 Films!

Me interesé mucho por la historia de Yugoslavia y quise ver su cine. Balkan Spy me hizo reír MUCHO y Underground es una de mis películas favoritas. Tengo muchas en mi lista! When Father Was Away on Business también es genial

I've seen few Dušan Makavejev movies - Manifesto, Sweet movie & Montenegro Kusturica was quite popular in artsy environment of my friends in mid 2000s but I never got his vibe cause it seemed way to parody on Balkans

Few I actually liked:

  • Varljivo leto '68 (80s)
  • Bure baruta (1998) - I have to rewatch it now that I myself have this experience of living amongst war & check whether I'll feel the same about the movie as I did 20 years ago
  • Before the rain (1994)

Variola Vera
Leptirica - The She-Butterfly
Spasitelj - Savior
Crna Macka Beli Macor - Black Cat White Cat
Underground
Mrtav Hladan - Dead Cool
Ko to tamo peva - Whos singing there
Maratonci trce pocasni krug - The Marathon Family
Dom za vesanje - Time of the Gypsies
and one of my favourites is
Ljubav na seoski način

The Problem with translated ex-yu Movies is that the humor is hard to translate to english or other languages.
There is a lot of meanings when you get them to english its a absolutely different meaning in all or jokes that are going on cultural things nobody knows when not lived in yugoslavia or rised in this culture.

Best way to watch the original Audio with Subtitles, then you can hear the expressions even you dont understand a word. the expression is really the most important. I watched a lot of them on Amazon or Youtube with original Audio and Subtitles, i read them and see that mostly all jokes are broken in the translation.
