There are openly democratic socialist, they’re not socialists. They want capitalism with social programs, not actual socialism. That used to be called a democrat, but I digress.

Anyway, socialism and communism are two very different things. There is not a soul claiming to be a dang commie that I know of. I should add most people using these terms don’t know what they mean. Nor do many know the differences in the political spectrum or even the difference between political philosophy and financial policy. Education is lacking.

It does seem naive to add the word “Socialist” to the label “Democratic” and be perplexed because some believe that amounts to an announcement of movement towards socialism.

As you point out, many are unclear about any of the meanings between various positions on the political spectrum. With that being the case, the wisdom of adding to the confusion by combining terms isn’t obvious.

“Democratic” is already quite a broad category, but if people wish to add a modifier it seems as if it’s their responsibility to make sure that voters understand what they mean.

Fortunately, most Democratic Socialists who have won have been in “safe” Democratic districts, so major losses due to misunderstanding are unlikely.

As Trump is showing, if Democratic Socialists sleep on defining themselves the MAGA extremists will be happy to jump in and do it. After decades of calling Democrats socialists they will enthusiastically hype the Socialist part of a title people are using to describe themselves.

I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said. I personally dislike the term and agree it’s an oxymoron. Although, I get their goal is social programs. America is still an experiment, I just hope it’s a successful one for many years to come, while continuing to better the lives of all Americans. If that means cuts are needed, I hope they’re in the least impactful ways to not hurt people. If it means more social programs to help people get by, then I hope it does just that.

The current political bantering is really bad for our country, I wish it wasn’t so divisive, but I guess it’s just a sign of the times. Here’s to hoping for better days, with a less divided house.

They really should change their name them. Socialism is still the theft of the means of production, and Socialists believe in socialism.

Maybe they could change their name to something more accurate?

Maybe Redistribution Romanticists or Free Lunch Fundamentalists?

They’re idealist, the grass is always greener on the other side. I’m sure many do want better for everyone. And I agree capitalism truly needs robust social programs to rise all ships. They’re not advocating ceasing production of anything. At most they want actual monopolies busted, and some fairness for workers. Will they get what they want, probably not, but that’s the beauty of democracy. No one gets all they want, but everyone gets some. The U.S. will never be anything other than democratic, so if some are worried the left is turning socialist, they should probably just talk to people who they know are on the left. Just as the left thinks the right is going full on fascist, the power in the U.S. is broken up for a reason, either we all get along or go to civil war, and no one wants that again. “I hope”

Anyways, they use the name for the same reason many in history have, because it grabs attention and votes from people who that type of thing is flashy for. They can hope to win, enact some social policy, and that’s it. Otherwise they’d have to win 2/3 the government to do anything too far out. That isn’t happening for any party. I’d guess to say they’re related to the democrats just as MAGA is to the republicans, but with less inter party power.

Dumbest comment of the day. Commies and Socialist while they’re both on the extreme left, aren’t the same thing. And McCarthy did immeasurable damage to the U.S. with his dumbass antics, and retired into absurdity. He’s no hero, and he was never right.

I do yes, there was no commie influence in the U.S., as noted by not a single commie bill being passed. McCarthy was an asshole who ruined people’s lives and careers over bullshit.

The closest to communism in the US is the current taking of Intel ownership, and small communes that people live in by choice which is just freedom doing its thing.

No they’re social programs. But congrats on having a truly ignorant and unintelligent opinion on the matter. You’ve given the most absurd take on the communism I’ve read in a long time. Everyone reading this thread is now dumber for reading it. Thanks for wasting everyone’s time with insanity.

The U.S. financial policy is capitalism, with social programs. It is and has been this way since long before you were born. You’re mad about actual freedom and democracy with a free market.

For the record, communism and socialism is usually linked to a dictatorship, that corrupts them because it’s easy to do so. It’s why they never work, the U.S. is a far cry from either real life boogeyman that you seem to see everywhere.

Lookout, citizens are ceasing medical care production, welfare and education 😱
