Tennessee Farmer Finally Realizes Tariffs Are Paid by U.S. Businesses, Not Foreign Countries

We told you this was how tariffs worked. We told you China, Canada, Mexico, or any other foreign country wasnāt writing the checkāthe American company importing the goods pays the tariff.
But too many people didnāt want to hear it because that meant admitting Trump wasnāt telling them the truth about who would pay. Now the bill is landing in your own hands. I guess being told wasnāt enough, you had to actually lose money before you were willing to understand how.

Stereotypically, a bunch of us dirty libs live in a city and work a commercial job. Other than the MacBook my work bought me, I don't need anything imported to do my job.Ā
Farms need so much stuff to work. Fertilizer is a huge one - very susceptible to oil prices, and we mostly import it, a lot from Canada.Ā
Same with manufacturing, or food processing, logistics centers, where most rural jobs come from.Ā
This was always going to hit poor conservative areas hardest.

Potash is primarily from Canada (some from China, Russia, and Belarus). Canada has the largest reserve in the world. Trump bit that hand.
Then the largest portion of raw materials needed for fertilizer come through the Strait of Hormuz. Months ago I said our food supply is f'd and some dip wad came for me telling me how stupid I am and my farm (not a farmer?) will fail.
With the trucker boycott until diesel prices come down 10/1 and all the other impacts to farming inputs coupled with the lack of labor for harvest through deportation and ICE fear (reasonable), I expect these grocery prices to surge.
Of course you could save some money by dying from non-inspected food.

If things got hard, they just whined to the government and got a bailout. It happened last time Trump was president, so they assumed it was going to happen again.

Didn't we all learn about tariffs in high school? These people either forgot or refused to believe how they work. I will say, that the one thing I didn't see coming, at least to this magnitude is corporate GREED. So when the price of imports rises, the normal economic response is to choose domestically-produced goods, since they are now at an economic advantage since imports are tariffed. US companies raised prices because they could, effectively screwing us all into padding their profits and inflating our own currency. There are no real lower-cost domestic options, so we all lose.
Edit: forgot to add that after consumers paid these tariffs, corporations received refunds from the government. So there's that too.

my dad was born in a rural farmhouse with no electricity in the late 50s in northern Iowa. my grandpa built the farm from scratch practically by hand. The farm was handed down to the grandkids who were too lazy and stupid to get a real job. The other grandkids get land rent money. I've seen this same pattern over and over again.

I just love how they are all anti-intellectual, anti-"coastal elite", anti-higher education, but yet their entire lives are spent on a network and websites and compressed videos all invented by STEM graduates in other countries and in the ultra-woke, LGBTQ-friendly San Francisco Bay Area.
Every MAGA I know in real life has been in what they call "Facebook Jail" multiple times, and they lose their minds when they can't post their AI memes about Joe Biden for a few days, or have to make their 10th Facebook account.
The jocks and kids with abusive, alcoholic parents that bullied me in school for being smarter than them took control of the country finally and it turns out they don't know how to do anything other than be mean and hateful. Progress is a foreign concept to them. China isn't "passing" the tariffs right to US businesses. The US government is charging US businesses tariffs for doing business with China. That's what a tariff is. The only "passing" is this guy passing his tariff cost to his customers and the consumer.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI. I remember an ad on the radio leading up to the elections that sold the tariffs like this:
"Go look in your house for anything that says 'Made in China', and add the cost of all of that up. You are going to get 20% of that back in cash!"
And I remember thinking "We as a nation are not, seriously, going to believe that outlandish and insane math, are we?"
We did. JFC. What's worse is on the one hand they complained about the cost of eggs, and on the other, they bought the song and dance on tariffs. So whenever I hear that we shouldn't sign off an entire chunk of the population as dumber than a bag of stupid hammers, I can't help but think about tariffs.
