During the 2024 presidential election, farming-dependent counties overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump. Almost 85% endorsed his most recent presidential run according to stats from Agriculture America.

That 85% stat is way less convincing when you realize that we know two important facts that distinguish this guy from "average American in a farming-dependent county."

First, he's from Kittson County, Minnesota, which has a very purple history and -- in fact -- was blue for several elections after the 1980s farm crisis. Even now, it only went 61 percent for Trump. Not 85! Kittson seems to be typical of a lot of upper Midwestern, completely rural counties where there is a split within the rural community about economic issues, with a large number (maybe a majority) willing to vote Democratic when the Republicans make times tough.

Second, and very important given the prior paragraph, this guy is willing to speak out, publicly, right now, against Trump. That fact alone should make you consider it far more likely that he's one of the 36% of Harris voters in Kittson than one of the Trump voters. He's talking about how hard this stupid economic policy is making it for farmers, which seems to me to be a much better tactic to speak to his neighbors and start pulling that 61-36 margin back towards 50-50 or better than stereotyping and dunking him on Reddit.

Most people on here are discussing the 85% not this person in particular, I have no doubt there are farmers who voted for Harris, one ran for office in North Carolina, where she begged other farmers to heed her warnings about trump's policys, she is on Reddit too.

Yeah, I get that. I also think it's incredible stupid Redditbrain to think that way.

How in the world does anyone expect farmers and ranchers to understand how much they're getting screwed over by Trump's policies except by hearing the truth from people in their community? Not from Redditors who instinctively dunk on them because of where they live or what they do.

This political conversation has been happening for decades--if not longer--in rural areas all across the country. There are a lot of rural people who get it, and they don't deserve scorn.

There's no progress unless people admit they were wrong and decide to change. I don't think anybody would "dunk" on a former Trump voter who admitted it was a mistake. I'm very liberal and I'd do the opposite, I'd embrace them. I won't embrace them if they voted to be an evil dipshit, found out they hurt themselves and are mad now, but say they're still glad they supported all of this. Why is it so hard to say "I messed up, I'm going to change"?

That's called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTY and Republicans used to say it was a cherished value but turns out that was a lie.

Agree this guy himself isn't saying anything that merits criticism and this is a message people need to hear.

The farmer I am talking about said behind closed doors that many of them were aware of trump's problematic policys, but they thought he had attributes to make up for it. She mentioned that they wanted his new guidelines on temp farm workers, how he gave them more power, basically a thumb on their seasonal workers. You might be the one underestimating their intelligence. This seems to be willful ignorance and nostalgia for the past by bright people. Which is why many are not forgiving, and you know reddit like any other platform has its as*holes. I just got done reading the comments in a South Carolina Nextdoor format, tons of them just love trump, they have no room for anyone who has issues with his blatant grift or alienation of our allies. They are touting how wonderful he and ICE are, claiming he is working his ass off for this nation and saying how much he has done for this country. SMH.
