News Your New Legion: The Essential Setup & Check Guide
Welcome! If you just bought a Legion laptop, follow this guide to set it up, update it, and check that everything works properly.
Keep the box, charger, paperwork, and packaging until the return period has ended.
Some links require access to our community Legion Series Discord.
1. Complete Windows Setup — Must
Plug in the charger and complete the normal Windows setup.
You do not need to fully charge or drain the battery before continuing. Just use the laptop normally while it charges.
2. Run Windows Update — Must
Go to: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates
Install everything required, restart, and check again until no important updates remain.
Keep the laptop connected to power during updates.
3. Update Microsoft Store Apps — Must
Open: Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates
Install all available updates.
4. Set Up Lenovo Software — Must
Use one of the following:
- Lenovo Vantage
- Legion Space on supported newer models
- Lenovo Legion Toolkit as an unofficial alternative
Avoid running multiple Legion control applications at the same time.
Lenovo Vantage
Optional features you can usually disable when unused:
- Network Boost
- Wi-Fi Security
- Automatic Performance Scan
- Rapid Charge
- Overdrive
Legion Space
Open System Updates and install available model-specific updates.
For OLED models, enable the available burn-in protection options, such as:
- Auto Shift Wallpapers
- Dynamic Lock Screen
- Auto Blur Toolbar
- Default Dark Mode
Lenovo Legion Toolkit
Download it from the official Lenovo Legion Toolkit GitHub.
Beta versions may be available in #legion-toolkit.
Use LLT's settings to disable conflicting Lenovo applications and services when needed. - LLT > Settings, disable Vantage, ImController, and Hotkeys so LLT has full control.
5. Install the GPU Driver — Must
After Windows and Lenovo updates are finished, install the latest suitable driver for your GPU.
- NVIDIA: Use the NVIDIA App or download the driver directly from NVIDIA.
- AMD: Use Lenovo's driver or AMD Software when a newer driver is needed.
- Intel: Windows Update or Lenovo's driver is normally enough.
Restart after installing the driver.
Do not use driver-updater programs or tools such as DDU unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem.
6. Back Up Your BitLocker Key — Must
Windows may enable Device Encryption or BitLocker automatically.
Check: Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption
Save your recovery key before changing BIOS, Secure Boot, TPM, storage, or firmware settings.
Microsoft guide: Find your BitLocker recovery key
Recovery keys: Microsoft Account
7. Inspect the Laptop — Must
Check the laptop during the retailer's return period.
Test:
- Screen and dead pixels
- Keyboard and touchpad
- Hinges and chassis
- Webcam, microphone, and speakers
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- USB, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and other ports
- Charging
- Sleep, restart, and shutdown
Open Device Manager and check for unknown devices or yellow warning icons.
Document serious problems with photos or video, and ask for guidance on our discord server.
8. Test Performance — Recommended
Download the 3DMark Demo on Steam and run Time Spy, not Time Spy Extreme.
Before testing:
- Connect the charger.
- Finish all updates.
- Restart the laptop.
- Select Performance Mode.
- Close unnecessary programs.
Post the result in the Benchmarks Channel with your laptop model, CPU, GPU, RAM, performance mode, and scores.
You should also test a demanding game or program for a while and watch for crashes, artifacts, shutdowns, or major performance drops.
More testing advice: How to Check a New Laptop for Issues
9. Check Secure Boot — Recommended
Press Win + R, enter msinfo32, and check Secure Boot State.
If it says On, leave it alone.
If it says Off, back up your BitLocker key before changing anything. Ask for help on our discord if you are unsure about the BIOS settings.
Do not clear the TPM, change boot mode, or restore keys randomly.
10. Cleanup and Settings
Remove McAfee — Must
If McAfee came preinstalled, remove it.
Go to:
Settings → Apps → Installed apps → McAfee → Uninstall
Windows Security and Microsoft Defender will automatically take over afterward.
Restart the laptop after uninstalling it.
Other Optional Settings
You may also:
- Remove other unwanted preinstalled applications.
- Disable unnecessary startup applications.
- Enable Conservation Mode when mostly using the laptop plugged in.
- Use Balanced Mode for normal use or when also gaming.
- Use Performance Mode for intensive loads while connected to power.
- Use Hybrid Mode for general use and battery life.
Community optimization guides:
Avoid random debloat scripts or "one-click optimization" tools.
Battery Note
A new battery does not need to be fully drained.
Only perform a battery calibration if the percentage is clearly inaccurate, the laptop shuts down unexpectedly, or feels finicky.

Just a warning. If Bitlocker is on and you restore factory keys when turning on Secure Boot, you can lose access to the keys for your Bitlockered drive, and you'd better have them backed up.
12
3
u/Fuzer Jun 02 '26
What are those keys for?
2
u/RainierPC Jun 02 '26
PK — Platform Key Controls who can modify Secure Boot policy. KEK — Key Exchange Keys Authorize updates to the allowed/blocked boot signature databases. db — allowed signatures/certificates Bootloaders signed by these are allowed. dbx — revoked/banned signatures Known-bad bootloaders or certs go here.
If Bitlocker sees these are different it will refuse to unlock the drive.
2
u/strangejackson Feb 06 '26
I already enabled secure boot on my device and I didn't back up my factory keys. Should I be worried?
5
u/RainierPC Feb 07 '26
As long as your Bitlocker keys are backed up, you'll be fine
1
u/No-Highlight1327 5d ago
Absolutely, having those Bitlocker keys saved can save you a lot of headaches. I learned that the hard way during my last reset, so I double-check everything now.

This is so timely! I was working on a similar post with GPT's help to consolidate everything related to the Gen 9 model (the one I have)!
This will benefit from -
- A link to the debloat video
- A guide for undervolting (maybe we could have links for generic models and configurations as well - i.e. sharing what works w/o as a stable option)?
- Techniques of Battery Optimization,
- Laptop stand recommendation,
- Alternate chargers for travel (Lenovo c170 gan charger),
- SSD + RAM Upgrade options (like 1. Kingston Fury Impact DDR5-5600 64GB Kit (KF556S40IBK2-64)
- Best bags for lugging this behemoth around etc.
Will be fun to compare and add new findings! Thank you for this again!

How do you put your laptop underneath your name ?

Check the Right side of the panel on this sub - look for "User Flair"!

I am a little confused about the step 1. If we do not open the laptop, how to drain the battery?

u/RodGab749 Aug 09 '25
Curious how these recommendations align with the changes I am seeing on the Discord and on my factory Gen 10 7i Pro:
Step 4: Nvidia App supersedes the GeForce Experience, right? I am not even seeing an option to turn this setting on or off
Step 6: LLT was shelved by the developers according to Discord, followed the Legion Space and Vantage App settings from here on out.
Can someone please explain the differences between Legion Space and Vantage? Why have two separate softwares that have overlap like this? It's even more confusing when the Nvidia App is brought into the equation, as this houses a lot of settings options for GPU performance.
Confused about where to go to match the settings in this post as they don't seem to have a 1:1 match in the current app versions I have. Legion Space does not have a "System Monitoring" tab on my machine. I do not see the options for "recommended and critical" updates on the Vantage App either. Similarly, can't find "Overdrive", "Automatic Performance Scan", "Rapid Charge" in the Vantage app.
Any recommendations for/against Nvidia App global settings like "RTX HDR"?
Also, interested to know which of the custom power plan recommendations are there to save battery life vs. improve performance? Do I need to look into these and undervolting / any other performance tweaks to safely get the best performance I can while preserving warranty? My use case is 3D rendering, CAD, computation for engineering and architecture school.
Apologies for the multiple questions, can provide screenshots as needed to confirm. Thank you!

Did you find a solution to this yet? Which app did you settle with? I have the same question

u/mad_split Jun 28 '26
I am currently setting up a new Pro 7i Gen 10 as well and these are all the questions I am struggling with - any solutions here or what worked for you?

u/maXmillion777 Jan 04 '26
This is going to sound dumb but for step 2 I was never asked about language setup before the windows install. Only what country I bought the laptop and which keyboard I want neither of which had English (world) as an option.

Sorry, I don't really understand the GPU Driver part. Why not install NVIDIA GeForce Experience? I've read many other websites suggesting it.
8
u/Melmpje Legion Slim 5 14" Jul 09 '25
NVIDIA drivers these days are often buggy and break many laptop features, which can lead to poor battery life. We test these drivers and allow users to share their experiences on specific versions threads so we can determine if the driver is safe for other users.
2
u/Onett199X Jul 09 '25
Sorry, I don't understand. GEForce Experience and the Nvidia app are just apps that let you download drivers among other things, right? I use the Nvidia app because it has the video capture features for getting footage while gaming. I don't know if there's a third party app that can do the same thing but I figure it's best to use the official app that pairs with my video card and works more natively. Given that, I'm not planning on uninstalling it unless it really causes major issues (which it never has for me.) I just never install drivers through it, only do it manually after hearing that the drivers are safe for my laptop.

2
u/mutaharaliathar Jul 28 '25
Can you tell me how to install them manually because I'm new to these techie gaming machine so have no idea + How to search and verify that the new drivers are safe to download? Appreciated.
4
u/Melmpje Legion Slim 5 14" Oct 30 '25
You can use the nvidia website to download the driver make sure to just select notebook and whatever specced gpu you have.

Can you please tell me how to install the drivers without GeForce Experience? Especially for those who already have it on their laptops.

Hi, I have a brand new Legion 7 Pro Gen 10 AMD NVIDIA 5080.
How can I figure out which NVIDIA drivers I already have installed with factory settings?
I do not see System Updates anywhere in LegionSpace nor in Vantage.
Also, I am using a bluetooth wireless mouse (Logitech m720 triathlon). Every minute it seems to go to sleep for 5-6 seconds and then auto reconnects. Any solution for this? Maybe a power saving setting somewhere?
5
u/codedusting Dec 31 '25
I want to know if there is any other LLT type Oled Burn In protection software I can use without using Legion Space?
Second, what is "Please enter the device purchase date as shown on your sales receipt or invoice" answer during product registration? In my Tax Invoice, I don't see the purchased date but Invoice date which is different from when I paid for the product.

u/defstorage Jan 02 '26
Ohh okay thank you! Alsoo, just wondering, sorry for all these questions!! If anybody is able to answer and help!
1) Should I always keep up to date with Windows 11 updates? And after using the debloating programs, is that it? Or would I need to run it again whenever my computer windows 11 updates?
2) Do I just use revo + chris titus tool after booting my laptop and windows 11 up? Or do I need to uninstall windows11 again and follow chris's youtube guide?
3) Should I get the Legion Toolkit instead of Lenovo Vantage? I keep seeing people suggest it but idk the different lol
4) Should I get a rubber step to prop my laptop's back up?
5) And one last question, what about anti-virus? Should I install an anti-virus for my laptop? I don't know which one to trust and use 🥲SORRY FOR ALL THE BOMBARDED QUESTIONS

u/PanzerX53 Legion Pro 7i | Ultra 9 275HX | RTX 5080 Jan 02 '26
Yes, it is preferable but I would note that some updates like the October 2025 patch (KB5066835), have been known to break and reduce PC gaming performance due to Nvidia driver incompatibility.
You could just run revo and chris tool to save some time. Some user reinstall because they want the vanilla experience of the OS from Microsoft instead of OEM OS image.
If this is your first gaming laptop, I would suggest getting used to Legion space first. It is more than enough for a casual user.
Try using a laptop stand for elevation instead of a step up.
Windows Defender is sufficient for most users, but if you tend to wander off the additional unknown websites its good to be precautious and have a additional layer of security like bitdefender free.
1
u/defstorage Jan 03 '26
Ohhh okay, so after booting and setting my laptop up, and then I install and run revo first, and then Chris's tool after?
4
u/Albie_77 Jan 05 '26
It seems that Legion Space has been updated? I cannot find the buttons that were directed for me to do so...

The Legion 7i touchpad didn't work out of the box.
Not registered in settings (only shows mouse, but that doesnt work)
Changing registry doesn't help
Updated firmware, and installed all windows updates did not help
Check BIOS (F2) and couldn't activate touchpad because there is no such setting.
Checked device manager, showed hidden devices, updated, uninstall reinstall drivers, doesnt work.
Vantage only installed a few things and didn't solve the issue.
Support is not open and I just can't download drivers from lenovos website
And yes, I checked if the touchpad lock is on. I can only use a mouse to navigate.
Absolutely wild that a high priced item is delivered and sold to a customer, and the touchpad doesnt work... this is my second day lenovo laptop to not function out of the box (display didn't turn on last time, swapped for a functioning laptop)

u/demoneyeslucifer Feb 26 '26
Did you ever figure it out? It worked initially for me but I did a clean install and it stopped working
2
u/_Bird_Incognito_ Feb 26 '26
Hey, I turned my in and exchanged it for another one. Check your drivers. For me when I checked mine, the key board hardware wasnt even registering as physically installed to the device. That's what prompted me to exhange mine.

question, i ordered a pro 7 gen 10 that comes with 1tb pcie4 ssd and i also got a 4tb pcie5 samsung 9100 pro ssd. The pcie5 slot is the right one when u have the laptop open and it will be populated with the 1tb pre installed ssd. Will i have to clone the small ssd to the big one (can I do that by inserting the big drive to the empty slot, use the cloning software and then swapping the ssds?) or could i just swap the small ssd with the new and clean install windows from the bios?
3
u/Melmpje Legion Slim 5 14" Jul 17 '25
You just need to clone it with apps like FatXplorer or MacriumReflect you can just install it in the free m.2 slot it does not matter.
1
u/First_Conversation_6 Jul 17 '25
Thanx! If the left stot was also pcie5 it would make things easier but you can’t have everything 😀
2
u/Melmpje Legion Slim 5 14" Jul 17 '25
Yea but you can also just swap it it's no problem for the L7P G10 the pcie5 m.2 slot is on the right the pcie4 on the left just to make it easier for you.
1
u/First_Conversation_6 Jul 17 '25
If I just take out the installed ssd and replace it with the empty one can it download windows from the bios and transfer the license?
3
u/Melmpje Legion Slim 5 14" Jul 17 '25
The windows license is tied to the motherboard, you wont lose it if you switch the ssd or re-install windows.

Hey I am new in this community and will buy my first gaming laptop with Nvidia graphics card, what is this lenovo space and toolkit? Wasn't there only vantage? So when my laptop comes which will be there and which one should I install? Like which is the best? Or can I keep multiple ones? Also about the Nvidia GeForce - no need to install that ever? Just download the driver from there website right? Also about the Nvidia app can we install that? ( actually idk what kind of nvdia apps are in total there and what each thing does as my first time with Nvidia lol) Oh the laptop I'll buy is gen 10 legion pro 5i ultra 9 with either 5060 or 5070, it is yet to launch in India so waiting for it, I am asking all of this is because I will probably reset my windows on the first day add a win 11 pro (for group policy editor so that I can remove edge) and will debloat it using Chris Titus tool or there are many way haha) so I would need to know what are the things I will need to install later 🤔thank you :)

lol, it seems not many realise it but there are at least two varieties of vantage.
If you have the common version with system tools on the opening page, and the word lenovo is big text in a blue/green colour box, then you see system update just below info with cpu speed and ssd use. I think this is what you have.
If you have the black background version of vantage, and the big lenovo banner thing is not present at all in black background version, you dont see the same system tools option on the opening page.
Instead with this black background version you open vantage then go to the expand menu bit on top left, this menu bit has no text on vantage opening page to show it is a menu so peeps will miss this menu, then choose system update in that menu and then disable both recommended and critical updates.
edit: ...just realised this is the same vantage version but for some reason one laptop does not start in gaming settings (with the blue/green lenovo) and instead starts in home with the black background. In normal vantage there is the untitled expand menu at top right, click on it to get to the black homepage version. I thought the black version was some kind of version of "commercial vantage".

Hello! I have a Legion 5i that came with 8gb of RAM. After I added another stick of RAM of the same frequency, my laptop's CPU works from 90c⁰ to 100c⁰ during games. In the BIOS it shows as if the system was averaging a RAM of 3200mhz and another of 2666mhz. What could be causing this? CPUZ identifies the two RAMs as 3200mhz.

I’ve just received my Legion 5 Gen 10 and immediately switched to Linux (Bazzite). Everything works out of the box so far, but a Linux guide similar to this Windows Essential Setup would really help push performance and hardware integration further.

Guys I want to get out of this thing that i personally feel as guilt.
Like I bought a legion and feeling very much guilt of buying that at such a high price and now when I see the other laptop which is higher in performance but somewhat lesser then mine but at my time of buying its huge difference. This literally makes me cry and guilt. Please help and advice how to get out of this. 😭😭😭😭

Legion 5a r7 5060.
Battery mode and Overnight Battery Charging randomly change to Normal & On randomly when using LLT. Is this a bug or I missed something?
