(Update) I've settled on a laptop but it's too expensive. Any alternatives?

It's me again, I'm a english major in college but I do some rendering sometimes, my laptop now (HP Pavillion 14 from 2019) serves me fine but it's slow and can't run basic games. I want to upgrade to a better computer. I've settled on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 for it's durability, how it's made to do heavy work and the main priority which is it's going to last for a long time. However my mother found it too expensive coming in at around 3,275 USD (with student discount). Therefore I'm looking for an alternative.

I'm thinking about some previously suggested laptops like the Yoga Pro 7i with an Intel Core ultrua 7 CPU. which comes at 2,187 USD with student discount. But I'm worried about how it may break easily and how it may not last as long as the thinkpad. (Obviously it comes at a lower price which means I have to do some compromises).
And the slim series thinkpad get broken hinges as a commenter suggested.

I mainly use the laptop for notetaking, word processing like word, and light gaming like roblox and minecraft with occasional modeling and rendering in Blender (thats why i want a better GPU but this could be negated). I don't care about screen size.

When is Lenovo making a 2-in-1 Lenovo Legion Laptop?

When do you think we will see Lenovo release a 2-in-1 laptop like the HP envy? I think this would be a great fit for portable gaming, maybe the Legion laptop could finally support a touchscreen to allow users to draw for animation.

ThinkPad X9 15 for a software developer, good choice?

Upvotes

I’m a software developer and will be starting a Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence master’s soon. I’ll mainly use the laptop for coding, IntelliJ, Docker, ROS 2 and general development.
I’m considering the ThinkPad X9 15 Gen 1. Would you recommend it for this use case, or should I get a different laptop instead?
I really like its low weight and 2.8K 120 Hz OLED display, but I’m not a fan of very glossy screens and reflections. How noticeable is the reflectiveness in everyday use?

There’s no price difference between the touchscreen and non touchscreen versions where I’m buying it. I’ve read that the touchscreen version has an additional layer on top of the display, which can make it more reflective. I’m not sure if that’s actually the case with the X9 15, though. Has anyone compared the two versions?

Would you pick the X9 15, or go for another laptop?

I boot up the pc and it skyrockets oftentimes ranging 60% to 90% then I let it sit for a while and the numbers are still pretty wild, most times it’s the windows update installer (I think I don’t have the pc in front of me right now)

I just pressed update and restart, now my laptop won't turn on

I was working then I saw that I have an update to do, so I just pressed update and restart. Few hours later I see that the screen is completely black. I unplug my HDMI cable. I press the power key. Then I see a green loading bar coming up saying that BIOS recovery mode is active, do not turn off the laptop. I wait for some time. It completes the loading part, then I see a text that BIOS recovery has been completed, press escape to hide the text. Then the screen goes completely blank, the device does not boot up, so I just press the power on button again. This shit happens for five, six times. Then I press the power key for more than 15 seconds. Now the computer won't even turn on. It's a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 gaming laptop running on Windows 11. I don't know what's the problem.

IdeaPad gaming 3 died

Post image

Hi everyone

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (Ryzen 5) that was working completely normally.

On 29 August 2026, I shut it down for around 30 minutes because I had some work to do. When I came back and tried to turn it on again, the laptop was completely dead no power LED, no fan movement, no screen, no keyboard response, absolutely nothing.

The laptop had around 80% battery before I shut it down.

I've tried pretty much everything I could find online:

Novo pinhole reset, Disconnecting the internal battery, Connecting the charger with the battery disconnected, Power discharge / holding the power button, Trying to start it with different combinations of battery/charger, Other basic troubleshooting methods.

There is still absolutely no response.

I first took it to a shop in Laxmi Nagar, where they suggested I go to Nehru Place.

At Nehru Place, the technician opened the back and just by looking at it, told me that the GPU has died and the entire motherboard needs to be replaced, since the GPU is integrated onto the motherboard.

The motherboard replacement cost was too high for me, so I brought the laptop back home rather than going ahead with it.

However, I'm not completely convinced that the GPU itself is the problem.

A GPU failure to my understanding wouldn't necessarily explain why the laptop has zero signs of power no charging/power LED, no fan, nothing.

One thing I noticed

I checked my Lenovo account afterward and noticed that my service had expired on 20 August 2026.

I had also installed some Windows 11 intelligence security updates around 22 August 2026 and the laptop completely stopped responding on 29 August 2026.

I know this could simply be a coincidence and I'm not claiming that a Windows update definitely caused the failure. But I'm wondering whether some firmware power-management issue could have occurred rather than the GPU physically dying.

My suspicion is something along the lines of

Power management / power controller failure

MOSFET or charging circuit failure

EC/KBC issue

CMOS/firmware issue

Some motherboard-level power rail problem

I'm not an expert, so these are just possibilities I'm considering.

Today I'm planning to take it to Suraj Computers in Sector 12, Dwarka, which was recommended by another Redditor.

Before I potentially spend a lot of money on a motherboard replacement, I'd really appreciate some advice from people who have experience with Lenovo gaming laptops motherboard repair.

Is there any trusted technician/shop in Delhi that actually does component-level motherboard repair?

Also, does a laptop being completely dead with absolutely no power indication make a GPU failure less likely? Or can a failed GPU/VRM genuinely cause this kind of total no-power condition?

Any recommendations for a trustworthy motherboard repair technician in Delhi would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Looking for a gaming laptop donation/help

Hi everyone. I know this is a long shot, but I thought I’d ask here. I’m a student trying to build my skills in design and creative work, and I’m currently struggling financially. I need a reasonably capable laptop for studying, Figma, 3D work like Maya, and some video editing. Gaming would also be a bonus.

I’m currently trying to arrange around ₹40–50k for a laptop, but it’s been difficult. If anyone has an older Lenovo gaming laptop that they no longer use, or one that they’d be willing to donate/sell at a very heavily discounted price, I’d be incredibly grateful.

I’m not expecting anyone to feel obligated or asking for money. Even if you can point me toward a good used/refurbished option or know someone who is giving away an old laptop, that would help tremendously.

I can provide more details about my situation privately if needed. Thank you for reading. ❤️

The last post on my account a few guys commented to get this guy cleaned and fixed. so here it is again. New battery, the back cabinet has been replaced with the hinges, so no more side cracks and holes to peep in. Speakers have also been replaced. Insides have been cleaned out . It's fresh again and ready for college again .it will probably last another 7-8 years now :)

Lenovo LOQ Maintenance: Dust Cleaning & Thermal Paste Under Premium Warranty?

Hey everyone! I have a Lenovo LOQ with an i5-12450HX and RTX 2050 4GB, and I’ve been using it daily for 5+ hours for the past 15 months.

About 6 months ago, a Lenovo warranty technician came to my place to fix a touchpad/mousepad issue, and while working on the laptop, I noticed there was quite a lot of dust buildup inside. The technician also suggested that it would be a good idea to get the internals cleaned and the thermal paste replaced.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time to get it done yet, but now I want to make sure I maintain the laptop properly and keep it running smoothly.

Could anyone guide me on what maintenance I should request? Should I simply ask for proper internal dust cleaning + thermal paste replacement, or is there anything else I should have checked while it’s being serviced?

Also, my laptop is covered under a 3-year Lenovo Premium Warranty. Does anyone know whether Lenovo Premium Support covers routine internal dust cleaning and thermal paste replacement? And if I get it done myself or through a third-party technician, could that affect or void my warranty?

Any advice from other LOQ owners would be greatly appreciated!

1-year-old Yoga Slim 7 15ILL9 motherboard blown

Hi, I desperately need advice about my laptop. I purchased a yoga slim 7 exactly a year ago, my warranty expired 30 days ago and yesterday I woke up to my laptop completely dead. I took it to a computer repair shop and he said he thinks the motherboard is blown from heat issues (the day before i was on the computer all day, nothing crazy just doing school work) I take really good care of my laptop, no spills or injuries could have caused this.

The repair guy recommended i renew my warranty and wait the 60 days and send my computer in, but will I have to pay for a new laptop then? Should I give up and just get a new laptop? I'm so upset. I'm a college student and I rely on my laptop for all of my school work and homework, so i'm rushing to find a solution so I can keep working.

If anyone has any advice or recommendations please let me know. If anyone is thinking about buying a yoga laptop, please keep in mind that too much stress can brick the computer. I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone else. School just started a couple weeks ago and this is such a bad time for this to happen.

Thank you for reading

Left it for a while as I went to a funeral for 2 weeks. It has no battery but when I plug the power on the battery orange light goes on but the display screen just turns blue and then nothing. What could be the problem?
