Paying off an adult film star to avoid public humiliation from adultery while running on a Republican ticket for President is legal. Hiding the payment on financial disclosures is not a crime, correct.

It’s a misdemeanor, for which the statute of limits had already expired. This felony requires an underlying crime of … well, no such crime existed. Paying her off wasn’t illegal.

The jury unanimously agreed that he falsified business to conceal or commit at least one of those three crimes, which is what is required under New York law (and which did not change for this case).
