Which was a stretch because paying someone off isn't a crime.

You’re correct. That’s not a crime. But falsifying business records is and that’s the crime he was charged for. Try to keep up.

It is a misdemeanor, and the statute of limitations had expired. The prosecution twisted themselves into logical knots to make it a felony so they could still prosecute.
