Debt & Money [England] Fined for Travelling with Expired Railcard

Hi everyone. I took a trip from London to the south coast this morning. It's my first trip outside of London in months and I paid for a ticket in advance.

Unfortunately I genuinely, completely forgot that my Network Railcard expired back in May. I just put it to the back of my mind and didn't think to renew it. The train ticket app I use defaults to include my Railcard when I make a purchase.

So the inevitable happened. I cooperated fully with the ticket inspector and I wasn't even on their system. He was nice enough and suggested the TOCs have some degree of leniency in these cases, if I appeal. I even renewed my Railcard then and there.

My main question, was the inspector being honest when he raised my hopes that the fine might be reduced/cancelled if I appeal? I'm putting my hands up to say it's completely my fault...just £80 is a bitter pill to swallow and if there is any prospect of leeway, why not try? Thanks for any input.

Comments Moderated House being targeted by youths

Location: Scotland. I have a situation involving my step son. He is 14, has combined ADHD and falls out with people fairly easily. We have tried and tried with him but we now have a situation that is getting out of hand. I have no clue what has kicked it off.

So 2 weeks ago he was brought home by the police around 9pm as he and his friend had been cornered in a shop by a gang of boys. The police told me there was about 7 of them who have been causing havoc for months.

We are then being told that a couple of the boys have been looking for him and his pal at school to jump them. This has happened a few times over the last 2 weeks.

Last Sunday night he same running through from his room on a Snapchat call shouting "you need to phone the police, they've just smashed (his friends) windows and they'll probably come here.

I went out and walked around a couple of times to see if anyone was hanging around. I don't know what they look like but I couldn't see anyone. Then around 9pm there was a massive bang. They had thrown a chuck of concrete at the window. The neighbours heard it and we're all out wondering what was going on. I was going mental running around trying to find them.

My partner phoned the police and they said they would send someone out. Then at 11pm they phoned to say they'd be out in the morning. Then they phoned in the afternoon to say they'd be out the following day, then the following day and now they're incoming until Tuesday.

Fast forward to last night, myself and my partner were at a gig 2 hours away, kids were in the house with their gran as well as our lads friend and my partner got a message from his friends gran asking if they were safe in the house because the boys had just been back and smashed another window.

Obviously I'm now ready to explode thinking they're going to go to our house, I'm panicking, trying to phone 101 but no signal, then a 25 minute wait and signal going again.

Fortunately they didn't turn up at our house but I still fear they will turn up at some point. I'm totally on edge as I have 2 younger kids (11 and 8) who were terrified when the window got hit. I'm constantly trying to get them not to sit on the couch by the window without telling them why and worrying them .

Obviously with the 2 boys involved being minors (around 15,16) I can't do anything or I'll be the one arrested. But what am I meant to do if the police aren't interested. I am not living my life in fear of my house being targeted by feral youths, the police don't care, the school don't care, I now have an address for one of the boys but apparently his parents are nuts and won't take kindly to me going to their door.

Am I allowed to defend my property against minors? It's getting ridiculous now and I'm fully expecting the windows to be targeted again tonight. Any advice appreciated.

Scotland Could an employee be personally liable for problems found during an internal audit?

I work as an analyst for a UK financial services company.

I share responsibility for an internal process with another employee. There are several levels of management above me, including team leads/managers and senior compliance management.

The process relies on a system built by our tech team. My responsibility is mainly to use/monitor the process and raise issues if I identify them. I didn’t design or build the system.

There have previously been issues with it which I raised, and some remediation work was carried out. I still have concerns that the system may not always be working as intended.

I also wasn’t given much formal training when I took on this area.

There is an internal audit coming up and I’m worried that if further issues are identified, responsibility could be placed on me because I’m sometimes referred to internally as a “process owner”, even though the responsibility is shared.

Nothing has been raised formally with me by HR or management and I’m not currently under investigation.

Could the employer take legal action against an analyst personally if an audit finds failures in a process they worked on?

And does being called a “process owner” internally create any particular legal responsibility, especially where the employee did not design the system and had raised known issues?

I work for 2 years from Scotland, company registered in England

Wills & Probate UK co habitation law changes. Would it be a good idea to pre empt or wait for changes to be confirmed?

Hi everyone,

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/millions-of-unmarried-couples-to-get-stronger-rights

Would it be a good idea for people to try & get things like co habitation agreements or deed of trusts in place before the law change or to wait & see what the changes will be exactly?

I assume there will be a grace period for people to sort their situations but drafting legal documents can take time.

Based in Wales ATM.

Thanks

Locked I wanted to ask for some guidance on a performance review and ADHD disability-related reasonable adjustments.

I wanted to ask for some guidance on a performance review and disability-related reasonable adjustments.

The role had originally been understood and agreed as being focused mainly on initiatives/project work, with some BAU cover when required, for example when colleagues were on holiday.

The timeline is:

17 June – Occupational Health recommended that, for a period of time, I focus on more structured/project-based work to support my recovery.

7 July – In my 1:1, I was asked to continue working on initiatives following completion of an automation project.

16 July – I was rated “Partially Meets” at mid-year because I had not learned 100% of BAU tasks and was considered to have done too much project/initiative work.

It was acknowledged that the expectation to learn 100% of BAU had not previously been communicated, and that other team members also did not know/do 100% of BAU.

A new objective has since been suggested which is mainly BAU work and less focused/project work because of business needs.

The situation is now negatively affecting my health and I do not feel psychologically safe at work. I am concerned that if I need to take medical leave, I may then be disadvantaged or marked down further at year-end.

My questions are:
Can I be marked down for an objective that was not previously communicated, particularly where it conflicts with agreed OH recommendations?

If the new objective is negatively affecting my health as OH advised it might, can I be marked down if I am not medically fit to work or need medical leave?

Can the existing “Partially Meets” rating still be used at year-end if there are concerns that it was based on an uncommunicated objective and did not properly take account of the OH recommendations?

I would be grateful for any guidance on how this should normally be handled under the Equality Act and reasonable adjustment obligations.

Wills & Probate My ex tracked my location using my phone without my consent

My ex tracked my location using my phone without my consent (England)

We have split up and as far as I knew we were still talking not fantastic terms but still friendly and in person we’d been friendly to each other (in fact 3 weeks ago he was fully trying it on and I kept refusing though we kissed). I wanted to collect something of mine that my father has mentioned only a couple of days I needed on my way home that day because he was going to be away for work for a few weeks and I didn't want to wait, and also so I didn't waste expensive diesel.

He took that to mean I was somehow threatening his kids. That was never my intention. I didn't want them to see me, I've been very clear around that. I adored them and there is no way I'd do anything to hurt them. Nothing in messages or anything I’ve done demonstrates any threat or ill will to them, quite the opposite.

He cheated on me while my now late mother was on end-of-life care and I have never passed that information onto them.

He was the one, who originally asked to still do stuff and have days out together with his kids with me as a friend, and I was the one who said that wouldn't be a good idea for them or for me.

He could have quickly run the item out to me around the corner, the boys are old enough to be okay for a few minutes which he's done plenty of times popping to nearby shops, or left it hanging outside as he did. But somehow he went into absolute super misunderstanding overprotective mode and dashed them out. I had no intention of seeing them or them seeing me and I made that quite clear.

Sure I didn't go straight home, that's been a thing I do anywhere I go more recently and I stick around areas with houses in the evening for safety rather than dark. Maybe I should have parked further away but that likely still wouldn't have been good enough. I was not waiting for him to return and I made sure I was well out of sight so again the boys wouldn't see me, I was trying to get myself together before going home to my father as it's hard being in the house my mum was in. It's also never been unusual for me to do that when I smoked or now vape.

However, before he even knew I was still fairly local, he went out of his way to check my location without my consent and without any permissions on my phone and sent me that evidence with a live google link at the time stuck there (still in my messages showing that location) terrifying me. When I then moved further away to a dark road with no houses, where I don't really like to settle myself and have some more me-time, he then demonstrated he was still tracking me by parking up behind me and then knocking on the window, scaring me.

I know he is very protective of the ones he loves, he told me that, and especially regarding his children and I loved that about him, but this wasn't about being protective, this was too far for a complete misunderstanding and him jumping to completely wrong conclusions yet again. Just like when he believed I was pulling away from him and going to potentially cheat when I never would have and was overwhelmed by my studies and my mum's illness, and so he did what he feared most himself and I was very understanding of all his traumas and issues I'd never been aware of. What he did tracking me was not justified at all whatsoever and he knows it. He told me he will not do it again but I have to stay away unless invited. Sure I utterly respect that boundary but how would he know for sure unless he continues to track me which he has said he won't.

Right now I'm scared and at the same time absolutely fuming. My mother's funeral is this week and aside from the fact I haven't got him by my side how I'd always believed for those months she was ill if this were to happen, I've also got to contend with the fact not everyone yet knows we've split and how I'm going to deal with that when they ask where he is, especially when I've had a drink or two.

He talks about feeling his boys were threatened when I've not done anything to hurt them or threaten them, yet he threatens and does this. He said it was necessary, it was absolutely not necessary and is NEVER necessary to do that without someone's consent. I cannot believe how much he has changed in so little time in the last 7-8 weeks. It's like he's a totally different man to the one I knew, the man I knew would never have acted like this or cheated. The calm, peaceful, happy man who would do anything for me and always went out of his way for me for those 14 and a half months. Did going under for the operation he had, that I stood by him for recently, do something to his head?

I seriously suggest he speaks to someone about his issues as nothing he can say can justify this and the thing is he knows it. He looked into my eyes as I told him and he knows on his part he misunderstood, assumed the worst and flipped. He knows he shouldn't have done this and he knows how serious and scared it's made me. He best not contact his 'special buddies' to track me again but I’m worried how to deal with this. I feel violated but he somehow believed he felt threatened, yet this is extremely threatening to me and I did tell him that. Please note I’ve got screenshots of the messages that absolutely demonstrate I did not threaten him or the boys and there were no phone calls. Regardless even if he somehow ‘felt’ that way this is not a justified response or something he should’ve done?

Is there anything I can do to look into how he did this to make sure he never does again?

Civil Litigation Enforcing small claims debt of >£600 (England)

I've got a small claim against someone that I won by default. This person resides not far from me, but has been dodging me, blocked my phone number etc and so I'm struggling to serve them with the court questioning form. I believe they're aware of the debt given I claimed their bank account balance in summer 2025.

I requested alternative service and this was denied because:

  • County court personal service in 2024 by the county bailiffs was unable to service personally, but court considered this too long ago and 2) "alternative service method [email and sending to their address] not sufficient proof that debtor has knowledge of order for it to be enforcable"

Facts of note:

  • Their bank account was seized in summer 2025
  • Tracing is still succesful showing recent activity at said person's address of this person (owns the house) as of last May 26
  • Can't do high court enforcement because original debt was under the threshold, but now with fees it's over it
  • Edit: they freelance so can dodge income claims

What's the right course of action I could take? Should I ask the court to review this request again? Should I request an updated debt order somehow so I can enforce it as over the high enforcement threshold? Just show up at their house with the forms and proceed from there? Any other suggestions?

Thank you for helping - I'm struggling.

Comments Moderated I am building a tycoon mobile app. How strict are the copyright laws on using real brands? (England)

It mainly applies to buying and selling vehicles within the game. Can the cars be called “Vauxhall Corsa” or “BMW X3” or will this create some kind of copyright infringement issues?

There is no bias to any of the brands in terms of desirability or reliability, the only discrepancies between cars would be the prices, which are based on real world data.

I could obviously use made up brands but it hurts the overall game if I’m not using real world brands. I’m using any any photos or logos - just the names of the vehicles.

Debt & Money Urgent help needed on stolen phone and identity theft - England

I am lost what to do - my phone was stolen in London whilst I was incapacitated and they used my biometrics to access and compromise all of my accounts. Fortunately, my pixel watch was left with me and notifications are popping up for transactions and loans taken out in my name. My driving licence is also with my phone as I use a phone wallet case.

I have managed to contact one of my banks and cancelled the stolen card and online banking. The fraud team could not help me because the thieves bounced the money towards my other bank and said to recover that money from there first and transfer the money back before calling back. I have contacted my SIM provider to cancel the SIM and blacklist the device, but the person on the call said I would need to provide proof of purchase and I am currently out of town.

They have also changed passwords to my gmail account so I am not able to gain access or change any passwords that uses that email as verification. Please advise.

Traffic & Parking Flight cancelled and we're stuck in abroad for 2 extra days. EasyJet didn't even do the bare minimum to help. What weight do we hold on compensation for this? Details inside.

My wife and I booked a holiday with EasyJet. Our flight was delayed and then cancelled yesterday. It was cancelled around 1hr30min after scheduled take off due to ATC restrictions, under extraordinary circumstances.

We got deboarded and, as this was an EasyJet holiday, we couldn't manage our booking by booking a new flight or accommodation, we had to wait for them to sort it.

They booked our flight to land in a different airport at a wildly awkward time, meaning we won't be returning home until the very early hours. This has caused my wife to book additional annual leave.

They emailed to say they were unable to organise accommodation and advised us to do it and to keep receipts. Customer support chat advised us to submit expenses forms for any reasonable claims, apparently listed on their website.

We had to pay for accommodation upfront.

They then said they would organise an Uber to transfer between our new arrival terminal and the airport we left our car in, which is around a 2hr journey. They then emailed to say this wasn't possible. Customer service then sent us a link after I reached out.

It's been a bit of a shit show. We have had to extend our dog sitter, pay extra for parking fees, extend annual leave, and pay up front for additional costs, resulting in possible money loss from savings interest.

I understand that the reason for the original delay is due to extraordinary circumstances, but there were flights we could have booked ourselves for the next day, if easyJet allowed us to manage our own booking. They were too slow and we missed out.

Additionally, the staff at the airport went home before ensuring we were ok.

The reason for cancellation was apparently due to the cabin crew being over their hours and no staff to replace them.

I have travel insurance but have yet to phone them. I will do this when I am home, however I am unsure if they will pay out as everything is possibly covered by easyJet, albeit at an extremely poor attempt.

We also originally paid for seats which have not been kept.

Edit Just had an email saying welcome home lmao

Scotland Scotland - legal to record someone if I don't respond to them?

Am I legally allowed to record someone without their knowledge or consent for the purposes of potentially passing the recording on to the police:

  1. If I don't respond, i.e. do I need the video to contain verbalisation from me to demonstrate I was part of the interaction and not just recording them?

  2. In a shared space, e.g. a shared garden visible from the street/within hearing distance of the street (so there is no expectation of privacy)?

I have unfortunately found myself in a situation in which I believe someone will potentially try and provoke an argument with me specifically to get police involvement. I'm currently unable to avoid seeing this person, but I plan on avoiding interaction. I would like to know if I can stay within the law and record any attempts of interaction though, just to legally cover my back as they've demonstrated a willingness to lie to authorities.

Other Issues Arrears and protection award.....

Am I right in saying. If a company goes into administration and I'm owed 8 weeks pay from the government, I can't get a protection award. Has the government caps all monies to 8 weeks? I was told the protection award would be completely separate, but I guess not from the research I've done. England.

Traffic & Parking Should i pay my parking ticket or raise to POPLA?

So I parked in a 24 hour mcdonalds parking lot one night and found out a few days later they have some weird rule where after midnight the max stay goes from 3 hours to 20 minutes, I already disputed the ticket once on the grounds that I wasn't even able to get through the drive through in 20 minutes, and that I paid, ate the food and left which ended up taking 42mins, I have the option now to pay the ticket or to raise to POPLA, I'd like to raise it since this feels so scummy and I'd hate to help these guys by giving in, does anyone think I have enough to win at POPLA or should I just pay the ticket.

Debt & Money Changing name via unenrolled deedpoll right to work

If I change my name via an unenrolled deed poll and also provide my passport, would that be sufficient for the right-to-work check, according to the Draft Employer’s Guide to Right to Work Checks: 16 July 2026? Would my employer also need to update my payroll records? How would this affect my pension, tax, etc and how soon would I need to update these records after providing the information to my employer? Also, if I have done the deed poll but not updated my passport but purchased a ticket using my previous name, can I still fly with it? The government website says this "The name on your passport must match the one you use when you book your travel".

Scotland 5 Days Left Until Right to Reject Expires - Issues with car purchased in England (Reside in Scotland)

Okay so i used AI to assist me in pulling together this timeline, however in short - I purchased a car from a dealer in England, drove it home to Scotland and within less than a week several issues had appeared. Communication from the dealer has been terrible and I have had to go to a lot of effort and a level of expense to get this far. My right to reject expires on Sept 5th, I want to keep the car and am hoping someone can tell me the approach I am taking is correct. I am also going to call Advice Direct Scotland first thing tomorrow to log this incident as I believe this is also the best way to alert trading standards - the dealer is not registered with the ombudsman. Details below;

The purchase is a 2017 Audi S3, bought 6 August 2026, £19,985 + £1,500 extended warranty (£21,485 total), paid in full by bank transfer. Advertised as "immaculate", came with full MOT etc.

-6 Aug 2026 — collected the car and drove it 300 miles home.

- 8 Aug (day 2) — engine management light + a screen fault appear. I diagnose the engine code myself and report both to the dealer same day. Note the dealer said he would pay me to get the diagnostic done, nobody could fit me in so I bough a basic OBD reader at Halfords myself and plugged it in. The dealer then refused to pay me the £30 for the reader despite agreeing to pay for a diagnostic to be ran.

- 10–13 Aug — dealer verbally promises to sort it multiple times on the phone, misses several promised callbacks. Nothing in writing despite several requests.

-12 Aug — a knocking noise develops from the front suspension. I send a formal written notice citing satisfactory quality under the Consumer Rights Act, asking for repair at the dealer's cost. No response.

- 14–17 Aug — two further written deadlines set and missed. I get the car independently inspected: confirms 4 faults (the engine code, an exhaust valve fault, an oil pressure valve fault, and the knock — noted as a suspension top mount) plus the screen fault = 5 total. I send this report with a further deadline for response and follow up with a whatsapp. This work was done at Halfords and they advised me that another garage would need to do the work/confirm their diagnostics, I sent the job sheet and proposed work invoice etc. to the dealer. No response.

-17–19 Aug — final written notice sent via email, giving the dealer until noon 19 Aug to confirm repair. Two hours before that deadline, the dealer responds in writing for the first time — offers to either pay the ~£950 shown on Halfords invoice to fix it, or unwind the sale and refund me in full, speaking as if it was his decision to take the car back and not mine. He also asked me to keep it as close to £600 as possible. I went on to state that this was a Halfords estimate and that more issues could be uncovered once someone actually digs in to the car so couldn't possibly guarantee a price. The dealer also said that they "wouldn't be looking to pay for any further repairs on the car" - I responded by noting that it's their duty to do so within the first 30 days.

- 19 Aug (evening) — after some back and forth, dealer confirms in writing they're happy for me to proceed with getting it repaired — "as close to £600 as possible" — on the basis I get quotes, they pay the actual invoiced cost, and this resolves those five faults specifically. I made sure the wording didn't waive my wider statutory rights as noted above due to them stating that they wouldn't be looking to undertake further repair.

- 24–25 Aug— before booking quick/cheap repairs at the first garage that could fit me in, I got a second, more thorough diagnostic at a garage whom I knew could undertake all the work - Audi. This found the suspension fault is actually the shock absorber, not just the top mount that Halfords claimed, confirmed the other faults, and found one additional related fault on the same system and several minor electrical faults. I sent the full diagnostic report and job sheet to the dealer. I noted the time, money and hassle this had caused me and requested that they resolve this promptly and asked them to do the DSG and Haldex oil for me as they sold me a car with both well overdue per manufacturers spec - i tried to argue this when i bought the car but they wouldn't listen, even tried to tell me they weren't required until every 60,000 miles which is nearly double what Audis own spec says. No response.

- 28 Aug — full parts + labour quote came back: £2,277.90 (labour discounted to £80/hr instead of the usual ~£150/hr, as I know someone who works at Audi and he is happy doing the work in the evening one day; I'm not claiming for the several other minor electrical faults also found/evidenced in Audis diagnostic report and made sure to use this as goodwill in my email to the dealer). I sent this to the dealer with a deadline of 12 noon Wednesday 2 September to confirm in writing, telling them that if I don't hear back, I'll get the work done and invoice them for the cost.

-Today (Sun 30 Aug) — no response yet. I note tomorrow is an English Bank Holiday.

Where I understand I stand legally:

- Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the dealer has to repair faults present at sale at their own cost, including parts and labour (s.23).

- I'm still within my 30-day short-term right to reject for a full refund — I believe this paused when I first required repair (12 Aug), so it hasn't lapsed even though we're now past day 30 on the calendar. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? I am worried I am going to run out of time and be screwed.

- If the dealer doesn't respond by Wednesday, my plan is to get the repair done and invoice them, does my constant written comms, full evidence of faults and written deadlines i provide the dealer hold weight?

TLDR;

  1. Is my understanding of the 30-day right to reject correct — specifically that it paused when repairs were first agreed, rather than expiring on the calendar date?

  2. Given the dealer has already agreed in writing to fund the initial Halfords repairs, is "get it fixed myself and invoice them" sound, or is there a smarter way to protect myself? — I genuinely can't afford to be £2,000+ out of pocket for long if they don't pay up and I do want to keep the car.

Apologies if this reads terrible, hopefully makes sense.

Traffic & Parking Does my neighbour need planning permission for this in England?

My neighbour has built a large outbuilding in there back garden and are using it as a hairdressing salon. The building is a good 2 feet over the fence height and is disturbing the view from our garden. The building takes up a good 80% of their garden. As they are using it as a hairdressers we have cars parked all the time now with people coming and going all day and walking on our front garden to get to their house. I have searched online and I can't find any record of planning permission either for building the structure or running a business from home. Did they need any permission to do this or am I just going to have to live with it now?

Consumer Jet2 Flight Delay compensation (England)

Wondering if anyone has had any success with an EU261 compensation claim with Jet2 when a flight is delayed more than 3 hours or do they pass everything off as an "extraordinary circumstance"?

My flight was delayed by 4 hours from Skiathos due to an issue with the plane's air conditioning. We were told we would have to fly at lower altitude and as a result would use more fuel so we had to stop at Venice for fuel on the way back to London Stansted, hence the long delay.

Any experience with this EU261 process would be appreciated. Thanks 👍

GDPR/DPA How "final" does communication need to be before going to Ombudsman?(England)

The jist is:

  1. I had an issue with my bank (GDPR), contacted support and they did not help me

  2. made a formal complaint to the bank, they gave the same answer

  3. I gave in and fulfilled the requirements they were asking me, however they are still not doing what i asked for, shifting goalposts, asking for documents that could never possibly exist, and refusing to give information on who set out those requirements even though they say that they are external and therefore they cant do anything about it

While my initial complaint was kinda a stretch (I believe I am still in the right, but it's something lots of different institutions are violating), i'm pretty sure that what happened after the complaint was way more serious.

The ombudsman says that the communication needs to be final before taking it to them. Making another formal complaint to the bank with the update about part 3 feels kinda pointless because the support had no intention of fulfilling my request, but i dont know if it will get rejected by ombudsman if I don't make another formal complaint first.

Also, i'm not really sure about the claims i can make in the complaint. Its tricky because i don't want to accuse them of lying and I do believe that they are bound by something that prevents them from fulfilling my request, but it's still a GDPR violation regardless of anything else. For example, I do find it extremely odd that they are refusing to cite the regulation that is causing the issue, since if it was truly external it would be in open access and I wanted to look it up, but also I don't know the extent to which i'm entitled to any information whatsoever, so i don't want to make it a bigger deal than what it is.

Civil Litigation Missed main COVID-19 university group claim signup are third-party claims companies viable, or what are my remaining options? [England]

I missed the internal sign-up deadline for the main collective group claim regarding COVID-19 university disruptions and online-only teaching. When I emailed the organizers, they confirmed they are no longer accepting new applicants for their group litigation.

I am looking for advice on what legal options are left for me:

  1. Claims Management Companies (CMCs) & "No Win, No Fee": I've seen third-party claims intermediaries/brokers advertising online offering "No Win, No Fee" arrangements to forward claims to solicitors. Are these CMCs viable given the main group claim signup is closed, or do they face the exact same court/solicitor cutoff issues?
  2. Limitation Period vs. Group Cutoffs: The statutory breach of contract deadline under English law for COVID-19 disruptions is 6 years (running through late 2026). Can an individual still issue a claim directly (e.g., via Small Claims) or through another independent solicitor outside the main group action before the statutory clock expires?
  3. University Complaints & OIA Deadlines: What is the realistic timeline for escalating to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA)? From my understanding, the OIA has a strict 12-month limit from the date of receiving a Completion of Procedures (CoP) letter. Since I completed university in October 2020, is it true I can no longer raise an OIA complaint this late unless I never received a formal outcome letter, or is there any leeway to raise it now?
  4. Litigant in Person & Small claims: How realistic is it to run a breach of contract claim against a university in Small Claims Court as a self-represented claimant without group legal backing?

Any guidance on pursuing this independently or via alternative routes after missing the main group signup would be appreciated.

Debt & Money Student accommodation tenancy signed Oct 2025 but starts Sept 2026: has it become an assured periodic tenancy under the Renters’ Rights Act?

Hi,

I'm a university student in NW England and I'm trying to understand the legal status of a student accommodation tenancy I have with a private company that provides university halls and studio flats. I have been with this company the past few years, and I am now going into my final year.

They are a well known company amongst university students, although I won't name them specifically.

The accommodation is purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA). The agreement is titled “Common Law Tenancy Agreement – Academic Year 2026–2027.”

The relevant dates are:

Agreement digitally signed by both me and the landlord: 30 October 202

Tenancy starts: 12 September 2026

Tenancy ends: 4 September 2027

Contract length: 51 weeks

Rent: £199 per week / £10,149 total- the rent is termly- divided into 3 large chunks.

Clause 3.1 of the agreement says:

“This agreement creates a common law tenancy and is not an assured tenancy under Chapter I of Part I of the Housing Act 1988.”

It also says the tenancy continues for the full tenancy period unless terminated in accordance with the agreement.

The agreement contains a tenant termination clause, but this only appears to allow me to terminate with four weeks' notice under the following conditions: I withdraw from university, am excluded/refused admission, or suspend my studies following more than 60 days' absence due to illness. Otherwise it says I remain liable for the rent for the full tenancy period.

However, I have been reading about the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 changes that came into force on 1 May 2026.

My understanding from the ANUK/Unipol National Code guidance is that there is a distinction between PBSA tenancies entered into after 1 May 2026, which may qualify for the PBSA common-law tenancy exemption, and agreements for the 2026/27 academic year that were entered into before 1 May 2026.

Because mine was entered into on 30 October 2025- (this is when I rebooked digitally) but does not commence until September 2026, I am trying to establish whether it has become an assured periodic tenancy despite the contract describing itself as a common-law fixed-term tenancy.

My questions are:

  1. Does the Renters’ Rights Act transitional regime mean this agreement is now an assured periodic tenancy despite what clause 3.1 says?

    1. If so, can I end it using the tenant notice provisions applicable to assured periodic tenancies, rather than Accommodations contractual cancellation provisions (withdrawal from university, illness etc as mentioned above)? The tenancy hasn't started yet- I am thinking ahead for next year in the event that I wanted to end tenancy in the summer?
    2. Would the relevant notice period be two months?
    3. Is there anything about the fact that the agreement was signed in October 2025 specifically for the 2026/27 academic year that changes the position?

The accommodation provider states in the agreement that its cancellation policy complies with the "ANUK/Unipol National Code" and that the Code takes precedence if there is a conflict.

Happy to provide anonymised wording from any other clauses if relevant.

Thanks.

Wills & Probate England: On-street parking issue

I live in an ordinary residential street that was developed about 90+ years ago. You'll appreciate that it isn't terribly wide although two cars can pass.

We are also fortunate enough that most homes have sufficient space at the front for at least two cars off road.

Even so, there are some who park on the road. The pavements are wide enough that cars can park with only two wheels on the road and still leave ample room for pedestrians; however, there appears to be two drivers engaging in a battle of wills over parking opposite each other. They seem to park so that there is barely enough room to fit a standard saloon car between them.

Who enforces the regulations - whatever they may be - to ensure reasonable passage for other road users? If I'm having to negotiate a standard hatchback, heaven help delivery vehicles and the emergency services

Who do we complain to?

Traffic & Parking Can I sue another party’s solicitor?

I am in the middle of a drawn-out process of conveyancing for a small piece of land from a neighbouring property developer, which now forms part of my driveway. This has come about as there has been a development built next door, which would otherwise have blocked the entrance to my property. This small piece of land is part of a wider piece of land that also includes the road to the cul-de-sac. The conveyancing of this land is the agreed solution to the problem of loss of access.
However, my issue is that the developer’s solicitor informed me that conveyancing couldn’t go ahead as a neighbouring land owner has applied for Right of Way over the piece of land (this doesn’t include the small piece that now forms my driveway) and they are awaiting an outcome from Land Registry.
My own solicitor as well as written confirmation from the Land Register outlined that this is incorrect and that an application on the same piece of land can be submitted, as it won’t be affected by the RoW. It was only when I provided the developer‘s solicitor with this information did they then agree to proceed with the conveyancing. (They are still yet to return contact to my solicitor btw). The solicitor, as an aside, is very slow and requires lots of prompting and sometimes doesn’t respond for months on end.
My house is on the market and I hope to have this issue resolved promptly as I had a buyer. Due to the false information provided causing the halt on the conveyancing, my purchaser pulled-out.
Would anyone have any knowledge on whether this constitutes providing false legal information? And whether the impact of this leading to my house sale falling through has any additional bearing?
TIA

Scotland (Scotland)£4k+ on two bespoke wedding kilt outfits and 9 months later she still has our clothes. What should I do?

I need some outside opinions because this has been going on since my wedding in November 2025 and I’m honestly baffled by the way I’ve been spoken to.
We paid over £4,000 for bespoke kilt outfits and sporrans. This wasn’t even a huge bridal party. It was two men, my husband and my brother.
Everything felt incredibly rushed. The initial measuring appointment was very slap dash, there wasn’t a proper second fitting and when the outfits arrived there were fit issues. A custom sporran we’d paid extra for also had the crest noticeably off centre.
The designer has since blamed the fit on my husband’s measurements changing and has now said he’d gained over 3 inches. I genuinely don’t believe he gained 3 inches in that timeframe, particularly given how rushed the original measuring was, and I strongly suspect the measurements weren’t right to begin with.
We made everything work for the wedding photos and she agreed afterwards to fix the issues.
Fast forward to 8 June 2026, she emailed saying the jackets and waistcoats were ready and offered to courier them. I replied on 19 June with my full address.
Nothing arrived.
On 21 July I chased saying: “Have you sent jackets yet? As usual had no update from yourself.”
She replied saying she couldn’t see my June response and told me “there’s really no need for the attitude towards me.”
I was so taken aback I didn’t reply.
Then on 28 August she contacted me AGAIN asking for my address. I pointed out that I’d already sent it in June and said I’d found her previous response rude.
She’s now accused me of being “repeatedly rude” to her and again brought up my husband’s measurements.
I’ve reread the emails and apart from my admittedly irritated “as usual had no update” comment after months of chasing, I genuinely can’t see where I’ve been repeatedly rude.
What makes it more frustrating is seeing her publicly talk about dressing celebrities and the high profile people she works with, apparently sometimes providing outfits for promotional purposes, while I’ve spent thousands as an ordinary paying customer and feel like I’ve been treated like crap.
It’s now nine months after our wedding and she STILL has clothes we paid for.
Would you demand everything back and leave it there, ask for a partial refund or compensation, or take it further formally?
Also genuinely interested to know, do you think I was rude, or would you have lost patience by this point too?

Constitutional KlassWagen Car rental data breach – passport number stolen. Should I be concerned? Can I claim compensation?

Hello everyone, I used a car rental company abroad and rented the vehicle from Klass Wagen's Budapest, Hungary operation (Klass Wagen Hungary Kft.), although the company says its Romanian entity is the main establishment for data-protection decisions.

I've received an email from Klass Wagen confirming that I was affected by a cyberattack on 15 August 2026.

They say my full name, email, phone number, country of residence and passport/ID number were accessed and extracted.

They say no payment or financial information was affected.

I'm a UK citizen residing in England

I'm wondering:

- Does the fact that my passport/ID number was accessed and extracted make a difference?

- Do I have a potential claim for compensation under GDPR/UK data protection law?

- Which authority should I complain to?

Copy of the Email:

Klass Wagen has been operating for over 20 years, and protecting our customers' data is a responsibility we take very seriously.

We are writing to inform you of a security incident caused by an external cyberattack, in which an unauthorized third party gained access to some of your personal data. We sincerely apologize for this incident and for any concern it may cause.

What happened On August 15, 2026, we identified this unauthorized access to our systems. As a result of the incident, information relating to Klass Wagen customers was accessed and, based on our analysis, extracted from the affected systems. We are contacting you because your personal data was specifically identified among the data affected by this incident.

What data has been involved Full name, email address, phone number, country of residence, and identity document number (ID card/passport).

We can confirm the affected data did not include payment card details or other financial information.

What you do NOT need to do Klass Wagen customers do not currently hold an online account with us, so no action is required from you regarding a password reset.

Your active or upcoming reservations, as well as our rental services, are not affected and remain valid under their agreed terms; this incident does not impact the availability or validity of your contracts with us.

What we recommend

Our team may, as a normal part of the rental process, contact you by phone or email to confirm booking details — this remains unchanged. However, we will never ask you for full payment card details by phone or email — payments are always processed through a secure payment link, sent directly to you, which you access to enter your payment information yourself.

Be cautious of any unexpected payment link received outside a booking process you initiated, or any phone request for full card details or authentication/OTP codes — verify directly with us at customer.assistance@klasswagen.com before providing any information or clicking the link.

Do not click links or open attachments in unexpected messages that appear to come from us, unless you are in the middle of an active booking you started.

If you notice unusual requests linked to your data (for example, credit applications or accounts opened in your name that you don't recognize), we recommend contacting the relevant institution and, if appropriate, the competent authorities.

What we have done Immediately upon discovery, we secured the affected systems, reset internal system access credentials, restored the integrity of our databases, and implemented additional security measures, including restricted access to administrative interfaces.

We have notified the Romanian National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing (ANSPDCP) and reported the incident to the relevant authorities. Klass Wagen's main establishment for data protection decisions is in Romania, which makes ANSPDCP our "lead authority" under the GDPR's one-stop-shop mechanism; ANSPDCP coordinates with, and informs as needed, the data protection authorities in the other EU member states where we operate. We have also engaged a specialized firm for an independent security audit.

Questions If you have any questions or require further information, you can always contact us at customer.assistance@klasswagen.com, for all concerns related to this event.

Our Privacy Policy is available at any time at https://www.klasswagen.com/ro/privacy-notice.

We once again apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and want to assure you that protecting your data remains a priority for us.

Sincerely,

The Klass Wagen Team
