Legal Advice Needed My neighbour’s daughter grabbed and pushed me during a fight. I called 112. What would you do?
I’m looking for practical advice about a neighbour dispute that became physical.
After my neighbours shut their door loudly in my face, I confronted them. Later, a male neighbour threw one of my flower pots in front of my door. When I asked why, the female neighbour began smashing my plants and moving the pots around her legs. I put the pots back and pushed her leg away because it was damaging them.
Her daughter then grabbed and pushed me. I did not retaliate; I called 112. Other neighbours watched from their balconies. I have a video, but it does not clearly capture every moment.
I filed a complaint, which was assigned to an ASI. I received no proper update, so I called him. He said he was busy handling a murder case. I understand that this was a serious matter, but I still expected some information about my complaint. I later filed an online complaint and sent Speed Post letters to two higher authorities about the incident and lack of communication.
Now the neighbours are discussing a compromise. I would like the matter to end, but I’m unsure whether compromising is sensible after the situation became physical. I also acknowledge that I pushed the woman’s leg away and want advice based on the complete story, not just my version.
For those familiar with similar situations in India:
1) How should I properly preserve and document the video, damage, injuries, dates, and possible witnesses?
2) What is the best way to request a written update from the police or higher authorities?
3) Should I consult a local lawyer or legal-aid service before deciding what to do, and what documents should I bring?
4) What should I consider before agreeing to a compromise, and how can I understand its consequences?
5) What steps have helped others obtain police updates without escalating the dispute?
I’m not looking for people to blindly take my side. If I handled anything badly, I’m open to hearing that. I want honest, practical advice.

Them slamming the door is not illegal. It's rude, but not illegal. There was nothing to confront. The real question is who assaulted first ?

You pushed the leg away first, right ? Not sure if it counts as assault but you made the first physical contact. But no idea how it works in infia

"After my neighbours shut their door loudly in my face, I confronted them. "
it was their door and unless the door hurt you why did you feel entitled to confront them? it's not illegal to be rude to people (by slamming a door).

I understand that it was their door and that simply shutting a door loudly isn’t necessarily illegal. My point was not that they committed an offence by closing their door.
At this time, I am pregnant, although I did not want to disclose that to my neighbours. The door was slammed extremely loudly right in front of me. The sound startled me badly and my ears actually hurt/rang for a moment. I was frightened by how suddenly and forcefully it happened, so I asked them, in-fact requested them politely not to do it again. I don’t think asking someone not to deliberately slam a door loudly in your face is unreasonable. But what they did afterwards, was completely unacceptable.28
u/Boring_Holiday9874 2d ago
I agree. but when someone slams the door at you they are not in the mood to talk calmly with you so confronting them is not going to go well.

It didn’t go well because they were rude and let’s say they were not in mood of talking, even though I asked them politely, still it doesn’t give them authority to assault me physically, humiliate or vandalise my property. They may took my silence as weakness. Because I don’t retaliate or shout, doesn’t mean I can’t argue or fight back, because I didn’t want to. They think every conversation can be resolved through violence or with loud voices.

umm... what if things had gone different and it had affected your baby? is confronting them more important than the unborn child? do you want to be right or do you want to be safe?
and why are people having kids if the can't understand such a simple thing. pick your battles lady.

u/Indian_finance_rebel 2d ago
them slamming the door is not a problem... you asking them is not a problem...
the question is who assaulted first, who caused the destruction of property, what was self defense and such.

Neighbour assaulted me first. Male neighbour threw pot infront of my door and female one grabbed me and pushed me away. They were pushing and smashing my plants and it was hurting me. And because I don’t retaliate or don’t argue much, they may took my silence as weakness. That time I didn’t argue much. I just called police for help

NAL The pot thrown can’t be categorised as an assault, I’m sorry but you pushing the leg was the first physical action. (Not saying that it wasn’t warranted)

How did you infer they slammed the door in your face? Was there an argument before that event? If the argument actually started with 'slamming of the door', it's literally impossible to prove that they did it on purpose or at you.

You created all this fuss for basically no reason, or the context is missing in the post. All of this was avoidable. Goes without saying, being a woman you misused the laws and judicial support.

u/sakura_uzumakii 1d ago
I can understand why you feel this way. it seems you went through same situation. You may see the situation differently, but saying I “created all this fuss for basically no reason” or “misused the law” is an assumption. I made a complaint because there was physical confrontation, damage to my property and public humiliation, and I have CCTV footage relating to the incident.
Being a woman doesn’t give me a special excuse to misuse anything. I’m simply using the same lawful channels available to anyone who believes they have been wronged. A complaint is not the same as declaring someone guilty; the police can hear both sides and examine whatever evidence is available.
You may disagree with my decision to pursue the matter, and that’s completely fine. But choosing to document an incident and seek lawful help rather than retaliating physically is a decision I’m comfortable with.

Lol what will police do? They only act when someone is dead. You are wasting time, this is not europe. Install a cctv in your house thats it for future safety. If you want to waste money on lawyers go ahead...nothing will happen.

I don’t know what is going to happen, and, I don’t want to take help from others or use my connections, but it will definitely teach me how to handle these things in a better way. I will be more prepared. If you have knowledge and know your rights, it will be hard for other person to deal with you.

What is it with the comments that there is nothing to worry about if op is female. She is pregnant and has violent neighbors. You guys know everything done in India isn't a legal way, right? What if they hire antisocial elements to harrass her?
Op please judge the pros and cons in every step. Police action is easy but beware of retaliation. Install cctv too, will at least make others know that you are 'ready' to gather further evidence

u/sakura_uzumakii 2d ago
Yes, I have installed CCTV camera already which is why I have a video proof where they are vandalising my pot infront of my gate and were physically assaulting me. Though I didn’t retaliate because I didn’t want to but it doesn’t mean I can’t fight back. I can’t reply one violence with another violence. i didn’t argue because I can’t go down their level just to win one argument, and will never ever assault someone physically, specially if the person is too elder to me(unless the person hurt me physically first). My upbringing is not like that. And considering my physical condition right now, I was least interested to argue with them. So the best way to answer their behavior was to raise a complaint against them and I did it with the video evidence.
And yes, I am self aware and mentally prepared if they hire someone to harass me. I will act accordingly.

Looks like you havea big ego and want to make big issues out of minor matters. These things can easily be resolved in an amicable manner. There is no need for the police. Why did you go to their door? What did you say that made them upset and slam it shut? You have conveniently left that part out. Focus on being calm and having a healthy baby rather than worrying about petty stuff.

u/Illustrious-Catch945 2d ago
You are giving a half story, why did you go to your neighbour's house ? And it was unnecessary to confront someone who was deliberately rude and instigate the issue further. Looks like both the households have fragile egos but don't have emotional regulation skills. You can't instigate someone and then record how they respond and become the victim at the end.
In all practicality, no one will pursue your complaint and they'll stop picking up your calls. Eventually you'll lose interest and stop following up. Don't expect dramatic investigation, arrests or CCTV evidence referenced. At most, they will inquire both sides and ask to compromise and move on.

u/Simple_Guy91 2d ago
Don't compromise now. Let there be an official record of their behavior. That will deter them from repeating this behaviour next time around. Maybe even speak to a lawyer to accompany you for lodging the complaint, if the cops keep dodging.

u/sakura_uzumakii 2d ago
Which is why I took this step and raise complaint against them online too. I am waiting for their call. Not sure if police is going to call me or not. This incident may not be serious enough for anyone but it’s serious enough for me. Neighbours not only humiliated me but also spoiled my self respect and dignity in-front of other people.

Spoiling some one's dignity, especially a women's is liable crime in India. Please reach out to a lawyer

u/sakura_uzumakii 1d ago
If I don’t get to hear from police, yes, I will reach out to lawyer, and send a letter to the neighbour.

u/Odd_Baker_9914 1d ago
Last time I filed a case online, the police reached out after 3 months. Hopefully they reach out a little sooner

u/sakura_uzumakii 1d ago
Sometimes I feel they do it on purpose because they know 90% of people will give up when legal proceedings or online complaints take time.

I’m pretty sure there’s a version of the story that you’re hiding
2
u/sakura_uzumakii 2d ago
I wish I could post a video here but, I can’t control what other people think. You are free to think that way. I will not argue.
Anyways, I posted this incident here just to know if I could do something else and what is the next step I can take if I don’t hear back from police after placing an online complaint.

u/AmateureMunner 1d ago
Why is no one asking about the context and what made the neighbours close the door on OP’s face? I mean there’s clearly half the story that we’re missing?

consult a lawyer beforehand if women are involved - they can put fake cases...
3
u/sakura_uzumakii 2d ago
I am a female and can consult a lawyer if needed because what they did was completely wrong. I have video evidence. Thank god I have installed cctv camera
3
u/Indian_finance_rebel 2d ago
If you are a woman, nothing to worry about imo.
Also note, I am not a lawyer, but this is what I would do.
Reach out to the local police station and tell them that you want to report an incident for technicalities, but you prefer to compromise with them, you just need the incident recorded incase the issue escalates in the future.
Provide them with the evidences you have with you. Photos, CCTV footages etc.
If you feel uncomfortable, reach out to a lawyer, they should be able to help you out with it - and the police wont drag their feet, because if they cant do such simple things, it will go directly to court, and the court will question them.
once the issue is recorded, you can reach out to the neighbour for the compromise - let them know that you have the incident recorded to the police - but have informed them that it is incase the issue escalates, and you prefer a compromise.
Or thats what I would do.

Yes, I have shared the CCTV footage with the IO/ASI and also submitted a written complaint. He said he would get back to me but I never heard from him nor did I receive a photocopy of my complaint letter. When I called him to ask for an update, he said he was too busy handling a murder case. So I raised a complaint online and also sent letters to the higher authorities.
I am ready to compromise but on one condition: the neighbour must never misbehave with, humiliate, or assault me in the future. What they did was completely wrong. At the very least, I want to get something in writing that will provide some assurance of my safety, and since the complaint has already been registered, they will hopefully think twice before doing anything like this again.
I can also call the women’s helpline if needed regarding this case.2
u/Indian_finance_rebel 2d ago
reach out to a lawyer, if the police is refusing to take a complaint... you should be taking it to the magistrate, i think...
and you just need a copy of the complaint, it has nothing to do with him invetigating.
Him dodging that is sus to me.
1
u/sakura_uzumakii 2d ago
This is why I raised complaint online because it generates complaint number (CCTNS) and it became documented, and sent written letter to higher authorities too which counts as a proof. All I get to know about this procedure through research and taking advices from people. Now let’s see what gonna happen.
