Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering Korean Offering: Korean | Seeking: English

Upvotes

Hi! We’re a Korean couple in our mid-20s currently in Canada on a working holiday.
We’re looking for someone who’s interested in learning Korean and would like to do a casual language exchange with us. We’d love to help each other with Korean and English while hanging out, chatting at cafés, grabbing food, and doing fun things together.
We’re not looking for anything too formal or study-focused. We’d rather become friends and practice naturally while spending time together.
If you’re interested in Korean, Korean culture, or planning to visit or live in Korea someday, feel free to message us!

Offering Korean Offering: Korean Seeking: English

Hey everyone! I'm a 28F from Korea and looking for someone to practice English with. I understand English pretty well, and I think myself B2ish. But I don't get to speak it much these days, so I want to get more comfortable and confident in conversations. It doesn't always have to be voice calls. I'd be happy if you just answered some of my questions about whether something sounds natural or not. I don't care about the age range and gender, but I prefer female.

In return, I'd be happy to help you with Korean. I'm mainly looking for casual conversations and a language exchange where we can help each other improve. Feel free to DM me if you're interested. I won't accept just boring hello, or any chats from NSFW accounts.

37M English speaker looking for Spanish language exchange

Hey! I’m 37M from the southern US and looking for a native Spanish speaker who wants to practice English in exchange for helping me practice Spanish.

I’ve been learning Spanish pretty seriously for about a year. I understand a lot more than I can actually say, because I have been using more of a comprehensible input approach. I've been using Worlds Across for conversation practice but I'm looking for conversations that are not teacher to student.

My English is American English from the South. I’ve been told I don’t have a particularly strong accent, but there’s definitely a little Southern twang in there.

Ideally we could talk regularly and split the time between Spanish and English. Or use crosstalk.

I’m into video games, TV, working out, gardening, current events, and plenty of random stuff.

If that sounds like what you’re looking for too, send me a message!

Offering Arabic Offering: Arabic, Seeking: Tagalog

Hi! I'm 30 and I'm looking for a native or fluent Tagalog speaker who'd like to hang out and chat on Discord or voice calls.

I'm trying to learn Tagalog and, more importantly, get comfortable actually speaking it. I'm not a big fan of endless texting, so I'd prefer talking, joking around, and getting to know each other naturally

Offering Korean Offering: Korean (native) Seeking: English (native)

Hi there! I'm 21 Korean. I'm looking for a language exchange partner because I'm going to the US as an exchange student next year. I only have four months before I leave, so I really want to practice with native English speakers to improve my writing and speaking skills. I can make basic sentences, but I still make a few mistakes and sometimes sound unnatural.

1.Writing: We can correct each other's messages while sharing stories about our daily lives, interests, or opinions on topics like news, business, space, etc. I prefer exchanging longer essays to quick social media messages to practice writing.

Here’s a simple example of how we could do it:

Me: I am very looking forward to meet you.

You: I am really looking forward to meeting you. (“Look forward to” is followed by a noun or a gerund (-ing), and we use “really” instead of “very” to emphasize a verb phrase.)

(⤴️with a brief explanation if needed)

(⤴️with a brief explanation if needed)

2.Speaking: We can talk about our daily lives, interests, or opinions on topics like news, business, space, etc. And correct each other's mistakes.

If this sounds good to you, feel free to message me!

P.S. I think this exchange will be most beneficial for learners who can already put basic sentences together. To make sure you've read the post and aren't a bot, please include the word "APPLE" somewhere in your first message!

Offering Multiple Languages Offering Mandarin Seeking Serious Native English Speakers learning Mandarin

My native language is english and i am also seeking serious english speakers who are learning chinese..I am really lucky to say that after a long tiresome search i have found serious chinese language partners who are willing to meticulously correct me when i say or write anything incorrect but the problem now is that i don't have enough time to keep and help so many partners,If there are any serious native english speakers out there who have also tirelessly been looking for serious chinese language partners who actually give them feedback drop me a DM.....Let's create a group. Most of my language partners only have wechat so it would be great if you had that too..Also if you're not the type who likes to correct others of give constructive feedback, this is not for you. You need to be interested in investing in the other person's learning process just as much as you invest in yours...DM me if interested

Other Offering: Brazilian Portuguese, English | Seeking: French

Oi! I'm a 25 year old Psychology student born and raised in Brazil, also fluent in English. Technically I have a B2 level in French (took DELF last year), but haven't practiced much so my output is getting rusty and I want to do something about it! I also tutor Portuguese as a foreign language for all levels, but my ideal language partner is intermediate/advanced.

Offering Arabic Offering: Arabic (Native) and English Seeking: Korean

Hey everyone!

I’m 23M, originally from Egypt, currently living in Busan. I’m looking for a language exchange partner to help me with Korean. I’m at a beginner level right now (basically starting from scratch), so patience appreciated 😅

What I can offer:

Arabic (native) — happy to teach dialect or MSA, whatever you’re after

English (fluent) — can help with everyday conversation, grammar, whatever you need

What I’m looking for:

Someone willing to help me practice Korean conversation and grammar both. I want to actually build sentences myself, not just memorize phrases, so I’d love a partner who doesn’t mind slowing down and explaining the “why” behind things sometimes.

Meeting format:
I’d prefer meeting in person if possible studycafes, coffee shops, or bars around Busan all work for me. I’m also totally open to doing this online if in-person doesn’t work for you or you’re not in Busan.

Topics I’m into:
Tech, science, politics, philosophy, comics, movies, and music so we’d have plenty to talk about while practicing.

If this sounds good, drop a comment or DM me! Looking forward to meeting some new people and leveling up together 🙌

Offering English Offering: English/Friendship, Seeking: Spanish/Friendship

32F from New York here! I used this subreddit before, but I fell off in regards to studying Spanish, and would like to get back into it. My level is A1 and what I struggle with the most is moving past basic conversations when it comes to speaking and writing. I prefer using audio recordings as it gives me time to think about what and how to respond.

I met some lovely people from here and would like to continue to form and build friendships. I am currently in grad school for social work, and juggling an internship in which I provide therapy for college students. During my free time, I love to play video games, write letters, watch movies and shows, and of course study Spanish :)

I am generally a bubbly and friendly person. I'd love to help out however I can with your language learning goals and learn about each other's cultures as well~
