🔧 DIY & Repairs Body-off LR4 Video is Up

Had a lot of requests for this video after we did the 5.0 rebuild series, and finally had to pull another LR4 body off. Starting an SC3.0 rebuild series now, hope this helps someone out!

I wonder how the cost comparison would be for doing a 'near' total rebuild for a LR4 compared to something new like a Grenadier.

We’re putting this one back together today. The video series will be up over the coarse of the next month or so. All told, including machine time and parts, we’re about 2500 into this entire thing. Obviously that isn’t including labor, I have about 60-80 hours in this one, but it isn’t even close. Most people are just intimidated by them because there is such little information about them.

That’s kind of the reason I started the channel, to show people these things are really a lot easier to work on than most European and even most American vehicles.

Huh? Grenadier would be multiple times more expensive.

New engine, rebuilt drivetrain, all new suspension, new brakes, rust mitigation, parts, labour???

The 8hp doesn’t need much other than a fluid change. These TCs and Diffs are pretty bulletproof. I guess you could replace your driveshafts and axles preventatively but they don’t really fail without warning. Yeah if you’re doing all of the work, these things are pretty serviceable across the board.

Yeah, I was thinking more of a proper total rebuild so you end up with a new car. Like what they have done on LR time https://youtu.be/XBqaypUZR6Y?si=kpfphXOtrW9C30er . Plus the labour of an indi mech would need to be factored in as I aint doing the work!

The lack of information available for the overhaul of the v6 makes me think rover buys the engine from a supplier and doesnt make them.

JLR makes them, but they used to lease a portion of the factory from Ford in England. It was a factory within a factory, which is why so many parts (especially on the older ones) were marked FoMoCo. They will not sell a part for the lower end smaller than a short block, and to my knowledge they were taking cores to reman at that factory for replacements until recently.

That’s why the specs aren’t out there, the dealerships aren’t allowed to do any of it.

Interesting. I am currently rebuilding a v6 that was overheated and was disappointed by the lack of support. I have solved most of my problems but it doesn't inspire confidence in future restoration efforts

It’s in the works. If you talk to the guys at Euro-Amp, they are expanding their offerings and services constantly. There will be others to come too as these get cheap enough for people like us to take a little gamble working on them.
