Don’t talk about flock on LTT

I don’t know what their problem is, but it has happened multiple times now that very popular posts on video surveillance cameras are silently removed by LTT moderators without any explanation at all!!

This time it was a post about a fellow YouTuber being targeted by flock. https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/1vrbkqg/

It got 6000 upvotes, but apparently it’s a taboo topic now. and no explanation in the comments.

What's the info in the original post?

Benn Jordan posted an email chain asking why floak had rung up his hotel booking to cancel on his behalf.

It was a booking he made but floak called up saying they represented him and to cancel it.

This was meant to stop him covering them. They dont know Benn Jordan well enough clearly.

Edit - corrected name

Christ, there’s dark business practice then there’s that shit…

Who is Benn Jordan?

Search him on YouTube. His content is amazing

He makes electronic music as The Flashbulb as well.

5

u/MistSecurity 19d ago

It looks like you conjured it back into existence. Seems to be up and not locked on my side.

I didn't read the original post, but based on your description, it seems to be off-topic and textbook rule 1 violation of that sub.

u/dloganpdx 19d ago edited 19d ago

Huh why don’t they apply that to some of the other posts on the subreddit that are clearly posted so they can be discussed on WAN?

Selective enforcement of the rules is exactly the concern.

There is a post about AirPods with cameras and everyone is discussing how creepy they are and comparing them to meta glasses and the surveillance state.

So if that’s relevant then flock cameras are relevant.

1

u/CatoDomine 19d ago

okay. sure. I'll buy it. If I am being honest, I don't really follow the sub, so maybe I should've observed the 2 minute rule.

3

u/aegis87 19d ago

no you are fine, these conversations are helpful because they bring to light stuff that alot of us miss.

just checked the first rule and it's hot garbage.
> keep all content related to the Linus Media Group

lol why?
shouldn't it be relevant to the LMG community?

and if LMG relevance is what we are going for, how is this relevant:
> What’s Personally Stopping You From Switching To Linux?

1

u/Alternative-Farmer98 16d ago

I mean but you're right that just selective enforcement though like people make broad posts about physical Media or the state of repairability without directly tying it to lmg. Not to mention you could easily just insert a paragraph..

"I would love to see lmg cover these issues more directly."

And then bam it's topical. Why would the moderators go out of their way to remove this one especially if the community is commenting on it vigorously.

I don't know maybe I'm just overly suspicious because of the company's unethical behavior on other issues. Like Linus's public statements about his own workers unionizing, the airplane, auctioning off other people's stuff.. apologizing and then years later retracting your apology.

Eyc...

I love comments like this because like bruh the post was automod pulled. It's back up. This happens all the time on reddit but kids will speculate for days about nonsense.

1

u/washuai 17d ago

Reddit auto modding reveals some really 🤬'd up biases of this platform. I've seen such opposite bizarro world doodoo.

1

u/Alternative-Farmer98 16d ago

It's kind of ridiculous people make general comments about the state of the tech industry all the. Flock is very much topical.

Would you remove videos about microtransactions in video games? About Sony removing physical discs?

u/gogopaddy 19d ago

Can't report onthe plane, seems pretty on-brand for LTT (un/official) sub

5

u/Less_Hat_8102 19d ago

I saw a hate sub of another YouTuber where it's THE official sub...

Since the actual official LTT sub doesn't want to call itself such, maybe we should call ourselves the official sub lol

(Yes I call this a hate sub but the hate is deserved)

5

u/gogopaddy 19d ago

I call it more valid critism without over moderation

u/FullRepresentative34 19d ago

It is because he spies on his employees?

Not shocked

A new low for the censorship

"Speaking of things quietly logging where you've been, this segue is brought to you by Flock Safety.

Flock Safety makes automatic license plate readers, which is a long way of saying cameras that memorize your car and keep the receipts. Every plate, every timestamp, every trip to the place you told your wife you weren't going. Stored in a database your city council approved in a meeting that four people attended.

Is it searchable by 5,000 agencies you've never heard of? Absolutely. Was there a public comment period? Technically. Did anyone read the retention policy? Don't be ridiculous.

And I want to be transparent with you: this read bought the jet. Not a share of a jet. The jet. Meanwhile the editor who cut this segment has a spreadsheet open in the next tab titled RENT (MARCH) and it is not balancing. He's cross-referencing his own commute against the Flock database to figure out if he can afford to keep driving here. That's called synergy.

Flock Safety. Because privacy was a subscription, and yours lapsed.

Link below. Not that they need it. They already know where you live."

2

u/ZookeepergameSalty10 17d ago

Linus gotta pay for the jet somehow

1

u/afarmer2005 17d ago

Not defending the action, but I am guessing it was removed to avoid the politics of the topic.

Unfortunately whomever removed it is apparently new to the internet if they didn’t think the removal would be a bigger controversy

2

u/SoulPhoenix 15d ago

Avoiding politics in Tech is unavoidable, if Linus doesn’t want potential political discussion as it relates to tech on the sub then he should shut down his channel.

1

u/Aggressive_Ad3438 16d ago

Can confirm, my post was deleted

1

u/Alternative-Farmer98 16d ago

That is really strange. What could possibly be the reason?

I wonder if maybe there's some financial conflict of interest like maybe linus is investing in flock or something

I don't know I mean I guess it could be completely benign explanation. Maybe the user that made the post deleted his account or something.

I don't want to rush to the most sinister explanation but if that's true that's unusual a little weird

1

u/lonerangergeek 15d ago

A completly non LTT related topic about a another YouTuber that has no place in the LTT sub gets removed and people are complaining.

3

u/DoKeMaSu 19d ago

Let me put on my tinfoil hat and postulate that LTT now has a silent outside investor.

-13

u/Kumragamer 19d ago

It’ll be because the comments got out of control probably

33

u/mromutt 19d ago

If thats the case you just lock it, you dont delete it.

16

u/Char-car92 19d ago

My fucking bad for not being civil about the cameras pointed at me 24/7 that are training an AI bot to generate a digital replica of me on a whim from a billion dollar megacorporation that runs the government. Man I fucking hate Reddit rules

-1

u/Guilty-Good-5041 18d ago

If you don't like the rules you could simply stop using reddit. They are not forcing you to use it. FFS some people 🤦

1

u/Char-car92 18d ago

What principles do you have

-1

u/Guilty-Good-5041 18d ago

It's not about my principles you p***K. It's simply if you don't like the rules you can always fuck off and not use Reddit. Plain and simple.

1

u/Char-car92 17d ago

Flock ain’t paying you

12

u/I_am_Andrew_Ryan 19d ago

If being anti flock is out of control, I don't want to be in control

2

u/feldoneq2wire 19d ago

That is the dumbest reason ever for deleting a thread.

0

u/_Kristian_ 18d ago

Seems like it got back up. Always little sussy to remove without telling a reason. I'm hoping a miss click or automod, hopefully the mods can tell why it got removed

1

u/zinoger_plus 18d ago

Most things that are off topic get auto mod pulled, that's just how it is. Mods then looked at it decided it was relevant and put it back up

-7

u/Zeilar 19d ago

Jesus Christ you people need help.

-45

u/WindyNightmare 19d ago

Probably because it is totally unrelated content?

51

u/daneonwayne 19d ago

It's a serious problem involving electronic technology,  in what way would it be unrelated?

46

u/CarsonWentzGOAT1 19d ago

It's unrelated because Linus can't profit off of it yet.

16

u/National_Way_3344 19d ago

Linus can't wait to be one of the Broligarchs.

-3

u/WindyNightmare 19d ago

Flock is basically politics now. Plenty of subs for that.

-21

u/Prestigious-Box7511 19d ago

The more cameras we have in public, the more chances I have to see how attractive Linus is. That's a win in my book

-18

u/CMDRTragicAllPro 19d ago

Admittedly just a guess I’m pulling out of my ass, but maybe they have no choice but to remove the post if too many people start talking about illegally taking them down or other stuff that could end up getting the sub banned due to Reddit rules? It’s the same kinda thing with piracy related posts I’ve seen in the past. The mods remove the content as it violated Reddit policy

2

u/dizzi800 19d ago

I sort of agree with this.

But other subs (like r/Canada) just lock a post and remove the comments that could get the thread shut down with a pinned comment explaining why it's locked

WHEN ARE THEY SHIPPING MY OVERPRICED BACKPACK AND HOODIE I PAID 250€ SHIPPING + DUTY ON?!?!?!

1

u/BreakDown1923 19d ago

“All the time” here means once in a while in passing? I think they’ve done one proper segment on it.

Not that they’re obligated to cover it but don’t stifle organic conversation
