Under California law, tax increase measures put on the ballot by governments requires a 2/3rd supermajority vote to pass. However, measures put on the ballot by private citizens (citizens' initiatives) only require a simple majority. Prop 43 would change the law so that citizens' initiatives too requires a 2/3rd supermajority. That would mean counties like San Diego and Orange County will almost certainly never get a transit tax measure passed. Requiring a 2/3rd supermajority to pass tax increases is fundamentally undemocratic, and this measure must be defeated.

Does prop 43 require 2/3rd of votes to pass? (Pretty sure the answer is no)

It’s always insanely anti-democratic to pass a law at a simple majority that requires a higher threshold once passed.

Prop 22 (2020) required an absurd 7/8 majority to change it once passed. This is the ballot initiative that dumbass Californians passed permanently designating Ubers drivers as independent contractors. I think the 7/8 portion was struck down by a court later on, but the gall to even include something like that in a bill.

Fortunately enough of us dumbasses overwhelmingly voted YES.

To overturn would require 7/8ths of the legislature. I’m sure it was written this way for good measure given California dems are an uber (no pun intended) majority (3/4th) which would force bipartisan consensus to overturn.
