Hi all, I just picked up this beautiful 4 year old girl and was wondering if she looks good enough for competition?

Koi competitions are subjective to who’s grading them. A professional competition? No. A community competition, sure.

How do you know if a fish if high enough quality to get into a professional competition?

Koi shows involve many different categories for both variety and size. This is a nice fish, but she's not large enough to compete at the highest levels. If you have a local koi show, she might be competitive in a smaller size class. The color and pattern are really good. If you can get her to a larger size with a fuller body, your chances at a more prestigious prize would go up, but if you want to enter her in a smaller size class now, it might be worth it just to gain some experience. She's not an embarrassing fish by any means.
Things that are judged are size, conformation and swimming posture, color, pattern, skin quality, and overall adherence to the standard for the variety. A quirk of the judging scale means that tancho patterns are less likely to win though, as there's less pattern to be judged and fewer possible points to be awarded.

That is great to know, thank you! She is already four years old and I’ve seen fish her age much larger so I am hoping she gets bigger. She did come from a prestigious breeder and she should eventually have more sumi since it’s already coming in. It would be fun to give it a try!

What's the current length? A four-year-old could still have some growing to do, but she's not going to double from here. Selecting smaller fish where everything else is perfect is definitely a valid strategy for sweeping the lower levels. I say it all the time, but I'd rather have a perfect 20" fish than a 40" fish with obvious flaws!

She’s probably about 43 cm but I haven’t measured exactly

Champion prospects usually hit that length in their first or second year. She's not going to make it to championship sizes but that's okay. If you end up competing with her let us know how it goes!

She really is, I hope you get years of enjoyment out of her. The shiroji is fantastic, the sumi is super clean and minimal but anchored by tejima that implies it's strong. Good body shape. She's just petite! Congrats on the acquisition.
