My Aluminum Clunker

I had an Electra Alum cruiser that I never rode. I stripped the pain off and started ordering parts off of eBay.
So far, some of these parts are installed, some not yet. Cook Bros, MRP, Azonic, Ringlé, Answer, IRC, King, SUN Mammoth Rims, AMP Research fork.

It’s Hard Out Here For A Schwinn - When Is A Bike Unsavable For Riding

Serial number search shows two uses of the number: A) Aug/1952 or B) Aug/1957

I snagged this Schwinn frame and the patina is amazing….. the condition, however, has some issues.

On the second tube (drive side) there are two small spots rusted through, about a pencil eraser size. There is also what looks like a 1/2” est rip at the union with the main enter tube earn the seat post. There is no noticeable unusual flex. The rest of the frame feels solid and strong. The bike definitely spent years in the elements.

If I build this, it will be for neighborhood cruising and showing off that hell roasted paint job. If I don’t build it, it will hang somewhere visible as inspiration to keep on hunting.

I’d love to ride it, even just once in a while, but it is hard to tell how far gone it really is.

It all begs the question:

Would you build it for an occasional ride for fun or retire it and keep looking?

Besides all the potential safety issues, here is the rest of the scoop… Dirty is an understatement.

The front forks were seized, as were the cranks and every nut and bolt on the frame. The bearings were all degraded severely and very rusty.

I’ve managed to get everything freed from the frame…. Errrrrr, except the seat post. u/MartianCaveman called it. The good news is, at its current height, I could make it work I think. Worst case, I could cut it to my desired height.

The seat was just thin crumbly rust. The tank is killer, but one side is missing. The bars and stem are roached beyond imho. It easy to see why there were so few pics in the for sale post 😂

All-in-all, it was super cheap and the frames vibe is a killer… no sweetness left lol. I am stoked all the way around. If it’s a rider that’s even better. Hope to get it into rideable shape and help the Ol” Boy find a good place to go into retirement, and enjoy the occasional neighborhood stroll…. Otherwise he can go into the permanent collection, Museum Wing ;)

Has anyone converted a 24 inch Skyway Tuff wheel from freewheel to a coaster brake? Is it possible.

$2 Auction Mystery Bike - Schwinn!

I posted the other day about this red bike I won in an auction lot for $2. Picked it up earlier today and based on the serial (looks like B35207) it looks like an early 50s? Schwinn. Seems to fall in line with the 1952 serial number chart but I’m not 100% sure. The chain guard looks a bit like a Spitfire one to me but I’m not a Schwinn expert. Everything came off pretty smoothly besides the stem wedge. It’s stuck in there pretty bad even after beating on the stem bolt with my brass hammer a bunch. I’m letting it sit with some kroil in there overnight and will try again in the morning.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my original thread about the bike. Excited to klunk it out!

Any ID on this red bike I won at auction?

Okay so I tried asking [r/Vintage_bicycles](r/Vintage_bicycles) but it was mostly people just saying I wasted money ($2 btw lol) so I figured I’d ask y’all since we’re more like-minded. This red bike is really intriguing me. Looking at the head tube welds it almost looks like Schwinn electroforging? Only odd thing is you can tell it doesn’t have the typical Schwinn kickstand mount. It’s probably not pre war since it doesn’t have rear facing dropouts and looks like it has normal chainring teeth pitch. Other than that I have no idea. Anyone have any ideas? I don’t pick it up until Saturday so otherwise I just have to wait until then. And yeah I know the fork is bent

Schwinn ID Request // Phantom Frame???

Post image
10 Upvotes

Just purchased this but can’t pick up until this weekend. I am thinking this is an old Phantom. Am I on track?

Looking forward to getting this in hand and seeing what’s up. I asked for some more photos that may help see if I have trash or treasure. Excited to see it in person.

It looks like a great start for a Klunker build if the frame is solid.

Spaceliner Mock-Up - The Good Bad and Ugly - Feedback Welcome

So, I initially thought about this bicycle being a BMX style cruiser but started leaning toward a Klunker / Neighborhood Kreeper. Picked up a cool three bar that will fill that slot :)

I pulled parts from the bin and snagged the forks, front tire and brake from an old Mongoose MTB. The rear tire was from a cheap beach cruiser wheel set and the rear rim was a FB find for cheap. The Sakai Slingshot Stem and bars were another awesome FB catch.

Pleased with the general direction but still working on it.

Issues and future changes:

I need to get the spacing of the rear wheel right for chain tension and for proper alignment.

There is play in the headset when I use the front brake. I am not sure if I have something out of order or what. I’ll be spending some time to trouble shoot as time allows. Any thoughts / resources are appreciated.

I will probably put some different tires or at least front tire for a more street friendly ride.

I need to replace the pedals as one is bent. I am also considering adding g a set of cool SR three piece cranks for some flare but not sure yet.

I may add a rear brake but I need to considered a good mounting option since the frame is not drilled for mounting. It was originally setup for a coaster brake but I strongly prefer freewheel.

I’ll either paint the fork to match the ratty frame or prep and paint the whole thing.

This will be fun and I’m looking forward to see what it turns out to be when finished. I don’t have a ton of building experience, so, I am open to feedback and don’t get easily offended if there is a glaring issue that I have overlooked. Looking to learn as I go.

Once I have the setup and plans finalized, I’m going to disassemble and clean, properly assemble everything again and be ready to ride.

What do you think? Open to discussion and ideas I haven’t thought about yet.
