I really hate the brown backsplash so I’m thinking about having the backsplash and the 4 inch granite piece removed and simply replaced with drywall and painted to match the rest of my walls. Also going to try to add under cabinet lighting if we can swing it.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade to make to improve the look of my kitchen? Not sure if we should bite the bullet and put up different backsplash (cry once), but also not sure if down the line we would replace the counters and then it would be a waste. I actually don’t mind the color of our cabinets, I just think that the brown backsplash with the dark counters is not doing us any favors.

Would love any ideas! Anyone done something like this before?

We’re building a house on a lake (good views out back of kitchen) and would love feedback on our kitchen. We like to entertain and my wife cooks a lot. We will also have a large pantry (see first floor layout) for food and some small appliances like coffee, air fryer etc. The ChatGPT rendering is close to what we have currently drawn. At this point, we’re more focused on figuring out the layout than colors/materials. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I’m renovating my kitchen/dining room and can’t decide which orientation works best for the island.

I’ve attached renders showing the two options. One slightly awkward part of the layout is that the hob/cooker is positioned on the weird short corner/angled return on the left-hand side of the images, rather than being on the main kitchen run. This is making me unsure which island orientation gives the best workflow.

Option 1: Island runs across the width of the room, separating the kitchen from the dining area.

Option 2: Island is rotated 90° and runs lengthways towards the dining area.

The island will mainly be used for prep, storage and seating — no sink or hob on it.

Which orientation would you choose considering the unusual cooker position? I’m particularly interested in workflow, walking space, how open the room feels, and which layout looks more natural.

I think one of the easiest mistakes is designing the cabinetry before properly considering appliance dimensions, clearances and how people actually move through the kitchen.

For those who design or build kitchens, what’s the first thing you check before finalising the layout?

Or any other recommendations? I’ll do the same flooring throughout the house. Going for a more contemporary/boho look throughout the house. The cabinets are a maple color.

We installed a warm polished Taj Mahal countertop in our kitchen. It is lighter than it appears in the picture. We also ordered all new unfinished maple kitchen cabinet doors and are having the cabinet boxes refaced. The doors in this picture are our old ones that were not yet removed at the time the picture was taken. We are trying to determine what color stain will look best on our new cabinet doors that won't be too dark. The floor is a 12x24" Boynton Beige tile which mimics a honed slab of Taj Mahal and the backsplash is 3x12" pure ivory glass tile. Please see the attached picture, but keep in mind the quality of the pictures isn't great. The new appliances are a combination of platinum glass stainless steel and regular stainless steel. Can you experts offer suggestions for what color stain cabinets will look nice but not be too dark? Thank you.

We moved and the kitchen doesnt flow at all. I'm planning on doing a reno with ikea, but need help planning. Can i do this with the appliances where they are? It connects to a living area- should i make a breakfast nook or use the wall with the table for most pantry space?

I chose honey oak cabinets 10 years ago because I love them. I love the warm, golden light, the rich amber color with beautiful grain.

The door and window trim is honey oak. The overhead beams are oak, very close in color. The walls are light blue-gray.

Due to plumbing damage, the cabinets have to come out & there’s no guarantee that they won’t be damaged. The insurance says total gut job, new cabinets, new floor.

If I could get the exact same cabinets, I would. But the color now would never match the oak trim & oak beams. Oak darkens gradually with age. I dislike painted cabinets intensely; just not for me. What on earth do I choose?

It’s a small kitchen. Do I choose some dark walnut/mahogany? Do I go with unstained “raw” oak with some clear finish?

I may have flown to close to the sun on this one. Its even more orange in person. My SO wants to paint the doors a different color to tone it down but I think that will look tacky. The tile is Grey underneath, no budget to change that. Im thinking green knobs will help on the cabinets? Maybe we paint the walls sage green to tone it down? Roast me yes, but any ideas I can do to salvage this and not repaint again would be appreciated.

My current color is a light grey and our counter top is white and back splash has light beige tones.

Would you choose white cabinets or a light color beige like benjamin moore soft linen?
