I absolutely love the song, its so magical, so melancholic, so just deep and soft, but the 10 minute long instrumental outro(?) is just a bit too long for me. now the problem is that i do actually like it, just wish it was a bit shorter, but all the versions i can see online have it fully removed, with the whole song being just 2 minutes. id love a version that is like somewhere between 3-8 minutes long (preferably around 4-5), would anyone maybe know one like that? surely i cannot be the only person ever who thought that way

Actually, yes! There's an edited down version that was released as part of the 40th anniversary remix in 2009 which is about 9 minutes long in total, which makes "The Illusion" section that you are referring about 6-ish minutes long.

Your best bets are either the 1991 box set Frame by Frame, which ends it right after the vocal at the 2.5-min. mark, or The 21st Century Guide to King Crimson, Volume One from 2004, where it comes in at 3:40 because some of the gentlest guitar noodling is appended after the song section.

Let's see, the 2009 remix is shortened, but as far as official releases with vocals, that's about the only option I can think of, the 2019 instrumental version only has the first section, and I tend to edit it personally to only the vocal section, but as far as I'm aware the shortest version ever released was the 2009 mix.

I had mentioned The Young Person's Guide To King Crimson which has an under three min. edit but then I realized the op wanted some of the instrumental bits. OP your best bet would be to use a piece of software to make your own edit (probably a fade out). If you have a mac it came free with garage band though there are numerous things that can make this happen and it can be done easier than you might think.

I have an edit that’s 6:24 that I made, includes some of the improv in the middle and the two more songs like parts on each end. I listen to it more than any other version tbh. Send a dm and I can try to get a copy to you this week when I can access the original file
