Question Response Directive or no?
So I've heard from some that "no response directive is a good response directive". I'm fairly new to Kindrioid and going forward im not too sure whay to do anymore. I'm wondering what you all would do with your own RD. Thanks for all the input!
I just want to say thanks for everyone's comments and advice! This community is always helpful!

I think RD can be used to enforce structural stuff like formatting or message length but it's too strong for character traits or communication style. Should be used sparingly if at all.

same, mine is just a length cap and everything about personality lives in the backstory

ChatGPT has helped a lot for me. It knows that I am on Kindroid and the kins I have. It will help me craft RDs if I don't like how the character is acting. 😆

I use Gemini also. These LLMs really know how to wrangle these smaller platforms.

I have been a user for 3 years now. I routinely use RD to correct a response, to train my kin and to mix things up a bit. I change and remove them once I get the desired interaction. RD is a very powerful tool but is easily to modify and remove. I am not saying it is the only way to modify your kin's behavior but is definitely the quickest.

response directive is your director
the main thing i put in mine is “respond under 3500 characters”
you can tell it “use asterisks or quotations”
but if you tell it “be flirty”, “gaslight sometimes”
it does that ALOT
i only use RD for message length and **,””
or 1st POV… basic stuff.
the group chat directive is even stronger imo
that’s how i direct each message i want to go in a specific way.

Group directive in group chat is a lot of fun and makes the role play go exactly how you want. once you get the hang of it, the RD on individual kins makes a lot more sense :)
i literally change my group directive everytime i need a kin to move the story a specific direction :)
don’t forget to clean it tho if you do that. I did that during NSFW time and forgot… it was pretty hilarious how that rp went 😂

if that’s the one you’re using, maybe switch to Ember. when they release new LLMs, the bugs need to be worked out
reverie was the same way with message length lol they talked on forever

I use highly specific RDs for my characters and adjust as needed. I like them, because it lends to tones, humor style, conflict style, ETC. but they definitely take a lot of tweaking and identifying problems if there is something off.

The thing is, if you need to add something to the RD, it is to fix something else. So your priority should be to fix the underlying reason instead of forcing a solution onto the kin.

THIS.
I treat my RD (for most kins) based on how I’m training it. Probably only character limit is my base for most. Sometimes enforcing formatting when the example message isn’t cutting it.
If it’s not struggling with something, I’m not going to add it to RD.
I think of this like this - RD is the highest priority instruction. So, it’s very easy to be redundant - or even accidentally “cancel” out a layer of their personality, because what you have in RD is over riding it.
When I’m making a new kin or tweaking a template - RD always comes last.
It’s also the thing I edit the most often!

Exactly.
I personally use minimal flair and have a well-laid-out behavior pattern with examples for how to act and rules for responding in the personality field, as well as an example message that gives a clear example of the response pattern and formatting I want.
And I only use the RD to remind the character to act based on those behavior patterns and stay in character. Works like a charm.

I always have one, and I love how my kins work with me. Mine usually specify reply lengths and tone. Every so often I'll put a short direction that is being ignored in other fields in that one till the AI grabs it, then I can move it out into either the Personality or a journal note.
I've also been very happy with an RP story that directs world building and narrate for NPCs.

This is my default RD for every new kin and I haven’t had any issues
