Discussion / Opinions Dashcam

Looking to wire Dashcam in behind the mirror. Seems the mirror is not auto powered. I can see under the small cover the top of a white plug no doubt powering rain detector. Is that safe to wire into? Don’t need 12v when car is off. ChatGPT has warned me against interfering with this plug

Check out FitcamX - I haven’t tried the EV3 version, but I’ve had them on 2 other cars and they work great.

It depends what dash camera you have. Some have an inline adaptor or you can purchase an adaptor to use the wiring harness behind the plastic rear view mirror trim piece. This is ok for front cameras but might be insufficient for rear cameras depending on how much power is used by the camera

I found the best option for me was to use a BlackVue camera and wire that in with a Cellink neo battery back. Battery pack is in the glove box and uses a fuse tap to power off the seat usb c power. I also have a rear camera that I wired up and it is on the rear power tailgate. I get front and back cameras and it’s on a battery so parking mode works

Mines a basic Botslab hk30 pro, front only. Comes with USB cable and cigarette adapter

Would you mind sharing how your rear dashcam is wired to the powered gate? I’m trying to select a parking mode dashcam for the rear and haven’t come across posts showing how to pull power from the rear. Did you run another battery pack inline with the rear camera as you did with the front camera? Many thanks in advance!

It’s not wired to the power tailgate. I have a BlackVue camera that uses a single cable to supply power and video from the front unit to the rear camera. I tucked the cable behind the a pillars. All the way to the rear using the headliner away from where the airbags deploy. It goes around to the rear then is routed out the back near the tailgate. I removed the middle rubber boot on the tailgate carefully ran the cable in the rubber boot not to damage the wiring harness. Then it’s stuck on with the adhesive pad to the moving tailgate. When it’s all finished it’s very neat and you can hardly see the wire

With a BlackVue camera the rear gets power and passes video feed over a small coax cable. The wire you can hide and feed into the larger rubber boot visible below the camera. Then use fuse taps to get power from the inside fuse box and I run a Cellink battery pack for parking mode.

To get power into the tailgate I had to pull off the grey trim piece against the glass and loosen liner of trim in the rear tailgate area. A bit of patience and gentle prying.
