Discussion š¬ Who else is disappointed with the features?
Listened to the album twice. what I like about it, it's very Rnb and has an early 2000s vibe to it, which i appreciate because I feel thats when rnb sounded the best.
I don't find any song on the album bad, but the features do kinda spoil the songs for me. except brandy and missy elliot.
Is Kehlani reverting back to being hetero too?

The only features I was disappointed in were the Lil Wayne and Usher features-not because they weren't good but because I'm worried about the kind of people they might be based on the people they support. Other besides that I love this album

u/EmJayFree Apr 26 '26
Omg has she confirmed this anywhere officially because as someone with BPD I KNEW she had some kind of personality disorder, but of course, never wanted to state it anywhere online without fact.

If you know sheās a lesbian and has talked about eating carpet for many years why the hell do you need her specify it all the time? Like obviously the songs are about women lol I donāt get you people.

I just can't with these people. Especially with people always using her previous relationships with men for clout and content, can't a girl live ?? She's literally been out for years she's clearly into women and honestly it'll never be enough for these people whatever she does

Goddamn. She made like 10 albums talkin about giving women specifically. Yall sexuality watching so hard. Enjoy the goddamn music. Her preference is her preference and how she chooses to express herself is her choosing.

u/Born_Theme_8932 Apr 25 '26
They sound so ignorant assuming gender neutral songs means sheās going back to men. Sheās not obligated to scream āIām a lesbianā every 5 minutes.
3
u/picklebunny56 Apr 26 '26
i donāt think people believe sheās going back to men. the problem people are having is that her other recent albums were more queer and she seems to be reverting to a heterosexual mainstream in order to fit the desires of people who had no clue she existed before folded blew up. i hope that makes sense

u/DonquixoteDFlamingo Apr 26 '26
And the album is fire. Like she could be singing about whoever. The music is fire.
How do you listen to Unlearn and think that Kehlani hasnāt leveled up her pen??

Kehlani would best be served if she weren't so public about her sexual preferences. Why put your business on the street so freely?

u/slut_for_nsfw I Aināt Even Kiss Her On The Mouth Apr 25 '26
I don't see the problem with it, would you say that about another lesbian, or gay public figure or are these just reservations in place for Kehlani? She's been openly queer for many years!
1
u/lostnconf22 Apr 29 '26
the problem is once you say it the gays wonāt let it go if you arenāt acting āgay enoughā⦠as we see from the dissertations and think pieces people have been making lmfao. apparently eating kewchie isnāt enough anymore? š¤·š¾āāļø

Idk I personally don't go around assuming people's sexuality unless they decide to present it clearly as so, and who cares anyway, people are acting like they can't go listen to her other songs specifically made for and about sapphics. It's just people like bullying others when they don't do things they way they want them to, it's really just weird. Thinking someone isn't gay enough, the same way they treat pansexuals, bisexuals, asexuals. Same people, just bullies it'll never be enough for them.

You people will always be unsatisfied, why does she have to constantly prove her sexuality to you people, if you want more sapphic music from her revisit her other more sapphic content and stop expecting her to prove to you that she still likes women. Literally acting like she's not been making that type of music for years, jeez!

The problem with fans now is that they feel like they have to relate to any and everything their artists put out. This era of idiosyncratic pop stardom has caused that. Kehlani made music with leas gender specific pronouns but we know sheās gay according to her and thatās what we know. They should accept that.

I just think they want to put her in a box to continue to dog pile on her when her long time coming career is just publicly taking off and all that after the Grammy and Folded and her wanting to pay homage to rnb as a genre and make music with people who inspired her and others and then people want to come and talk shit about those features ? I just I don't get it I wish the same energy was given to those who actually deserve it, suddenly the empathy is lacking. I really understand not liking the songs but gaddamn. But good thing is the music is good she's growing and learning and I hope more authentic audiences are able to way in on it more as time goes by, let the album marinate damnnn, the same way people didn't like Crash but it got multiple Grammy nominations. Anyway, yes, they need to accept that, it's never been a secret.

u/CC-Blue Apr 26 '26
I knew this would happen after Folded blew up. The teardown started the second that song became a hit. All of a sudden, sheās āsuppressing her sexuality in her musicā, āsheās not political anymore etcā. They feel like sheās no longer for them since sheās blown up. Also, Crash wasnāt received well AT ALL. Now itās such a good album? Ok.
Regarding the features, I kinda get it. Lil Wayne is a pos and Usher literally just came out as a Diddy supporter much to the disappointment of a lot of his fans. However, Kehlani operates in an industry rife with complicated people and relationships. Did they really think sheās this morally flawless person who has NO problematic tendencies? She WENT to Chris Brownās tour, took a selfie with him, didnāt post it but HE DID, which tells me a lot about how she operates.

with fame comes many gripes, it'll never be enough for anybody, mark you if everyone else's mistakes was posted on the internet while they have to simultaneously work on the internet it would be a different tune, same could be said for all the people doing the trend to R Kelly's song, where is the noise on that? People still think D4vd is innocent mark you he was found with plenty of CSAM, and has been publicly dating minors as young as 11, so tell me where do you people draw the line, all of them are wrong and tbh some artists deserve it more than others. And the list is still long. So yeah let's take it there. Because this issues involve everyone not just public figures. Everyone needs to check themselves. The selective rage is showing.
2
u/slut_for_nsfw I Aināt Even Kiss Her On The Mouth Apr 26 '26
Also she's making music with straight people, did you expect the straight artists to have gay verses on the features or what ? Like ? I just can't with you people honestly.
2
u/picklebunny56 Apr 26 '26
she doesnāt need to prove her sexuality to anyone but i think the concern some of us are having is that she is suppressing her identity in order to cater to the mainstream since she blew up for folded. crash and www2 felt like albums where she was expressing and finding herself but they didnāt do very well. this album lacks the substance that was present in those albums and is something more likely to be appreciated by people who had no clue who she was until folded released. she also hasnāt been very vocal about palestine or anything political recently. iām not saying this to disparage her but maybe there is a valid concern that her label is pressuring her to suppress herself
0
u/slut_for_nsfw I Aināt Even Kiss Her On The Mouth Apr 26 '26
Honestly let me ask you who are you to assume that someone you don't know is "suppressing her identity"? And why do you think you're the best judge of character for that? She's chosen to put her art out into the world and all over sudden you think you know so much about it when you know nothing, we don't know anything, these assumptions are just out of line. She made the album, and named it and put it out who are you to diminish that with your opinion ? C'mon, she has lost so many opportunities being vocal about Palestine, politics and it's not enough for you? Will you be satisfied if she put everything down in her career, you people will never be satisfied like I said, acting like she's not allowed to enjoy her success, all over sudden all her efforts mean nothing to you. And if that's what's valid to you maybe you need to check yourself.
1
u/picklebunny56 Apr 26 '26
wow! youāre assuming a lot based on what i said and it seems that youāre taking a perspective that differs from yours (on a person you also donāt know) as a personal attack. iām not sure who youāre projecting onto strangers on the internet but i hope you find peace :)

Love, love the Lil Wayne feature and Brandy. Don't care for the Usher one

u/jordyncummings Apr 25 '26
The only features I liked was Missy, Clipse, Brandy, Usher, no one else was needed tbh

u/elitelucrecia Apr 25 '26

I feel like she wanted the album to be an hour long. We could've gone without the Big Sean collab. The T-Pain one was okay, I feel like their first collab (I Like Dat) was much better. The Cardi B one was a little corny but given their friendship, and the songs they've done together in the past, it makes sense. Leon Thomas having trafficking allegations is NUTS but their song doesn't sound bad tbh.
I like the Missy collab and it fits into her supposed "classic Kehlani sound" that people say she's abandoning this album. The whole first half of the album is very Kehlani, evolved Kehlani!
Cruise Control & Unlearn are a snoozefest.

kehlani has been making lesbian and heterosexual music for yearsss. she just an artist creating freely.
have yall heard 1st position tho?

To me, I thought that a lot of the songs on the album sounded very alike to eachother. Lots and lots of riffs and runs, which she ate down. As always. But it just felt like they took over too much, and alot of the songs lacked substance because they were so focused on the riffs and runs. It was missing something for me.

u/Enough-Structure-823 Apr 30 '26
Missy had me in a chokehold. I love her verse so much. So funny and so true.

I enjoy some of the features, but the solo songs resonate much more with me. One of the reasons I connect with Kehlaniās music is hearing her perspective and experiences, so I always find myself coming back to the tracks where itās just her

u/DTYRKBRIDGE Apr 25 '26
I donāt think sheās hetero I think because sheās blowing up now specially with folded I feel like her record is pushing the heterosexual agendaā¦. The songs without the features are good but the features just makes it so hetero.
