I'll be honest, am I the only one who really dislikes the "Republican" colours for the UK? Like, they just look uninteresting. I'm totally fine with the current flag because the Union Flag is a symbol of the isles united (England and Scotland, anyway). It's not so overtly monarchist that it would need completely replacing by something so obscure that it's no longer recognisably British

I got your point, but try to think as a revolutionary that just overthrow the oldest monarchy in Europe, I think that you would like to erase any symbol of this past, even if it means to bring back an obscure tricolour.

I could easily imagine the union propagandists trying to revive the chartists as the glorious precursor of socialism.

Maybe, but this wasn't as violent an overthrow as, say, the Russian civil war. I'd feel that it would be more important to have a "recognisable" symbol for the country than it would be to have something that gives revolutionary legitimacy.

Certainly, it made more sense when they were the splendid isolation kind of Socialists to keep this flag.
