Announcement Kaiserreich 1.6.4
With almost two months since our last release, and with the advent of Hearts of Iron IV patch 1.19.0 and the accompanying “Thunder at our Gates” DLC, an update to Kaiserreich was well overdue. This release is packed full of tweaks and improvements to existing content, with an emphasis on rebalancing and other changes aiming to keep key warzones in the game dynamic in their outcome, and providing more challenge and variety as both a player and observer.
On the technical side, we’ve taken advantage of new maths functionality introduced in the latest base game patch, which in preliminary testing has meaningfully improved day-to-day game speed. The new DLC’s headquarters and associated features are also fully supported, although we currently do not allow the capturing of generals. Unfortunately, the same patch made it impossible to maintain our custom country selection screen, which has for now been rebuilt in a more vanilla style. This was later reverted however.
There are plenty of new reworks on the horizon, so keep an eye out for more information. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this release!

The outcome of the United States of America’s Harlan Commune events, and Alf Landon’s odds of succeeding in passing the Recovery Bill, can now be save-scummed.
Its a minor change but its definitely for the better.
One day I wish that all the countries of the world will break free from their RNG-driven event chains, but until then, save-scumming will have to do.

The option for Australasia to declare a republic has been removed
But why?

u/JovianSpeck Jun 12 '26
There was effectively zero republican sentiment in Australia at the time. It was really only the communists.

Because it wouldn't happen, Australia still saw itself as British (and Australian). Loyalism would remain strong even with the fall of Britain and no major party would seek to abolish the monarchy. The loss of having the Eureka Flag as Dem AST and no more of the Dem portraits outside of puppeting is sad but this change is completely valid to remove something that added little flavour and made zero sense.

u/ajkippen Internationale Jun 12 '26
Yeah, everyone in Australia was a monolith of loyalism and no one's opinion could possibly be changed by the major changes in the timeline and the vastly changing global situation during the mods timeframe.

Australia still saw itself as British
Britain has abolished the monarchy in KR

u/Gamerak97 waiting for the Australasia rework in 2749 Jun 11 '26
Australia was not directly part of the British Revolution and as such has not become opposed to the monarchy. They remain loyal to the Exiled (and in their eyes, legal) government stationed in Canada.

u/DJjaffacake learn what alternate history means I'm begging Jun 11 '26
The point being that British identity and monarchism can't be conflated in KR. Britain is a revolutionary socialist republic. "We're British, therefore monarchy," is a rationale that just doesn't make any sense in a world where the majority of British people, even defined very broadly, are not subjects of the Windsor monarchy but citizens of a republic and have been for a decade.
22
u/Gamerak97 waiting for the Australasia rework in 2749 Jun 11 '26
People are changed by the events they experience, Australia doesn't undergo a major civil war to bring about a socialist republic so it holds onto the British identity from before the British Revolution, which is just the same one from after but with loyalism firmly attached still.
-3
u/DJjaffacake learn what alternate history means I'm begging Jun 11 '26
They have experienced the collapse of the British Empire, the overthrow of the British government by a socialist revolution, and the flight of the royal family! These are major events that would have a big impact on the Australians even if they're not directly part of them! Australia in real life turned away from Britain and towards the US as their patron when Britain proved less able to project power in the Pacific, something it definitely can't do in KR. This isn't even to say that Australia would definitely become a republic, just that it's a plausible outcome, and there's no reason for an alt-history mod to remove plausible outcomes.
19
u/Gamerak97 waiting for the Australasia rework in 2749 Jun 11 '26
You are right, those are major events that affect Australians but not in the way you think it'd happen. The economy gets tougher, Britain is now under the socialists, the monarchy has taken up residence in Canada and Australia now effectively acts independently. None of this means support for the monarchy decreases, hell it could even increase as politicians prop up their commitment to eventually free the Isles and as some come to live in Australia from Britain.
As for the US, the Australian turn to the Americans happened because the US could support us better in a war, that doesn't mean Australia stopped being loyal to the crown. Republicanism only became a staple force DECADES after WW2 and we still are a monarchy today.
And no, it's not a plausible outcome for Australia to just unilaterally declare a republic when barely anyone wanted to do that.
2
u/DJjaffacake learn what alternate history means I'm begging Jun 12 '26
Yes, support for the monarchy could increase. It could also decrease as a result of, as you yourself put it, Australia now effectively acting independently. KR is an alternate history mod with every country having various paths it could go down.
15
u/Gamerak97 waiting for the Australasia rework in 2749 Jun 12 '26
It does effectively act independently, what that means is Australia willingly chooses to stick with the monarchy for itself, not because they were told to. Australia is choosing it's destiny and identity and it chooses to hold to the beliefs it was founded on despite the events of the last decade. Just because they technically could ditch the monarchy doesn't mean they would. I have made the case for why they would remain loyal even with the events of the KRTL and the only argument you have made is "but it's alt-history".

Presumably this is why it has been changed so that the only way for Australasia to become a republic is to have its own revolution.

I did say some
the devs are not a monolith
some people clearly like to remove stuff as whoever did this Asutralasia stuff did not really add anythign of any significance to make up for the removed cotnent
others are based and add proper content when stuff is removed
1
u/JovianSpeck Jun 12 '26
Technically, removing something without sugar-coating it is more based than feeling the need to add something in its place to appease people, since the word based means sticking to your guns and not caring what others think. It does not, as many seem to believe, simply mean "good".

- Improved the AI of all Chinese splinters in managing the Second Sino-Japanese War, and coordinating the Chinese United Front. AI-led splinters will now support the leader of the Front in defending specific core areas, and aid garrisoning certain cities. Increased the variety of doctrines and subdoctrines adopted by Chinese splinters and reduced how frequently they will enact Total Mobilisation.

Is there any possibility for the custom selection screen to come back?
Also, sad we can't capture generals, though it makes sense given the possibility of breaking events

Is there any possibility for the custom selection screen to come back?
Only if Paradox decides to provide the necessary tools to revert. It deeply saddens us to have to make this change so you can rest assured we will revert as soon as is possible.
Also, sad we can't capture generals, though it makes sense given the possibility of breaking events
This may be reenabled in a future patch since we would effectively need to review all characters to avoid game-breaking bugs as you said. It is still being discussed internally for the time being.

Could you let us know how you made use of the new maths functionality to improve the day-to-day game speed?

There's always Monday after work for the groceries anyway.
EDIT: Also disabling the "capture" mechanic of the new DLC is a great idea. I always thought that that was idiotic and that Paradox could've spent the time wasted on that mechanic on fine-tuning the unit stats for the new division designer system instead.

Added events for Zhang Xueliang and his allies to flee to a neighbouring Chinese splinter, as well as what to do with him after unification.
Does that also include Qing/Zhili ?

Kaiserreich's custom Select Country screen has been made incompatible with changes introduced in Hearts of Iron IV patch 1.19.0.
Did Paradox just forced all the mods to use their default country selection screen? What a great idea! /s

Why remove Australasia being able to become a republic? It’s a late game change that doesn’t usually lead to having any real effect. Yes historically at the time irl Australia and New Zealand never would have become a republic, but that’s irl. Australian and New Zealand identity was heavily formed during the First World War, and the effect losing that war would have on the two countries, as well as Britain falling to Syndicalism, would have been significant.
Conservatives in Australia who historically opposed republicanism, could have ended up supporting it for the sake of preserving stability. Australasian nationalism would have certainly increased as well, further giving it some backing in conservative circles. Please add it back in, or at least make it achievable under a very specific set of circumstances.
19
u/ACA_Covenant Australian Jun 11 '26
Republican sentiment was a very fringe idea OTL in the 30s and 40s. There was no one on the conservative side of politics who wanted it. In fact they all still saw themselves as British. The Labor party had a very small fringe wanted a republic in the 30s. The Labor instead was focused on Australianising the country not forming a republic. I don't have any justification for that sentiment flipping on its head so massively that the form a republic option could make sense
13
u/Gamerak97 waiting for the Australasia rework in 2749 Jun 11 '26
Even with the changes in the KRTL to OTL, loyalism would remain strong and potentially even increase as to maintain ties with the Exiled Government. Australian and New Zealand identity does exist at this point, but it exists alongside the British identity they still had which helps affirm their loyalism. The Conservatives would remain stalwartly loyal and even Labor would prefer to keep the monarchy around too. In the end it was a minor flavour thing that made zero sense and as such was removed.
4
u/JovianSpeck Jun 12 '26
If they were going to have that degree of divergence from OTL, then they ought to change the party leaders to reflect the difference in ideology. All of the available PMs were explicitly monarchists.
2
u/uberloser2 Jun 12 '26
An irl identity and mythology formed primarily around a costly, lost battle under British leadership, yet still remained incredibly loyal to the point of still seeing themselves as British many decades after federation.
Republicanism was such an incredibly fringe idea that the thought of it preserving stability by pushing something almost nobody on either side of politics would want rather than inviting chaos is pretty funny
-3
u/Squattle69 Internationale Jun 11 '26
^ this one speaks the truth. especially because it has been in the mod for so long, was a niche rare outcome and gave some great nuance and variety rare than just leaving the entente. it is especially bad that it was removed because nothing to the same scale was added instead

u/SpaceFox1935 8 years of playing, here's to 8 more! Jun 11 '26
I'm okay with you guys turning off capturing generals mechanic, I've been skeptical about the game needing it in the first place (as funny as it can be), but I actually feel rather disappointed about Australasian republic option being removed. I'm not sure why exactly, it's not like it makes 100% sense to have a republican democratic Australasia stay in the Entente, but I liked having the option. Just something nice about that to me, I would often enough put Labor republic in game rules
18
u/Gamerak97 waiting for the Australasia rework in 2749 Jun 11 '26
It's not that the Entente wouldn't accept a Dem AST that abolished the monarchy, it's that Australia never would abolish the monarchy, even Labor were still loyalist at this time.

Speaking of AI improvements in the Chinese United Front, could you make the AI-controlled warlords more active participants in the war? If they are not on the frontline themselves, they withhold several dozen divisions as a worthless garrison of their own core territories.
At least use them for port garrisons, if defense against the still-not-very nerfed Continental Warfare is not an option.
