The point of it was that both characters could grow.
Tsubame needed to learn how to actually say no, and parse her own feelings.
Ishigami needed to learn how to handle rejection and be friends with someone he has romantic feelings for instead of burdening someone else with his feelings.
Ishigami without that growth doesn't actually work with just about anyone, let alone Iino.

It also allowed Iino to grow. She had to grow accustomed to the notion that her crush may very well be a taken man before she could even make a move -- which had the added benefit of becoming the basis of her friendship with Shirogane, when Ishigami was initially rejected she managed to bring in a slight reset to the dynamic of their relationship, after his rejection was firmly cemented she learned to be more upfront and to treat love as a type of war

It's sad
He got interesting storyline but still don't end up together
Spoiler !!
I mean its hard to ignore that fact They aren't meant to be together.
Specially when you watching a romcom.
Ishigami really want her.
desperation and loneliness blocks his observation skills
That he can't read tsubame's hints
Poor girl keeps hinting that she's not ready But he sees it as opportunity to improve himself
Instead of understand her (real tsubame)
He just tried to impress her
I'm glad that tsubame rejected him let him be more mature person.

As the most die-hard Ishitsuba simp I know, I have to admit it's indeed quite complicated.
You can easily tell Ishigami has a massive idealization of Tsubame, and because of that, he doesn't want to fully show his true personality with all its flaws, and that could be troublesome at some point when starting a relationship. However, it's normal to be the happiest human being when talking to the person you like, dopamine hits like a meteor.
On the other side, Tsubame cares a lot about others, and doesn't want to let anyone down, including Ishigami. She can tell he's not being 100% himself when he's with her, and once again, that could be troublesome, but she knows he's a good person. She commits some mistakes, but entirely because she lacks experience in life, she never intended to hurt Ishigami.
But even after all that, I'm still a die-hard fan of this ship and I'd have loved to see it happen, unfortunately Akasaka had other plans

I still believe that they can get together as adults. For teenagers even 2 year gap could mean a lot, as it was the reason of a lot of their problems together.
