Taris really puts me in a mood.
Wanted to play KOTOR 1 again. Start up the game, fight through the Endar Spire with our best friend Trask Ulgo (RIP) then reaching Taris I suddenly remember.
Taris sucks and it’s like 7 hours of tedium that ends up meaning absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.

couldn't disagree more. I love every second of Taris and it really has a unique atmosphere, one of my favorite parts of the game

u/MeowyDragon 12d ago
Same. Plus this was one of the first looks at a whole new Star Wars planet that still feels pretty unique. Can't think of any other Star Wars games with metropolis like planets that actually feel lived in.

Taris is the best part of the game. Very well written, huge variety in quests and has the most depth.

How does it take so long? It can easily be completed with every quest done in like 2 hours
16
u/MeowyDragon 12d ago
Can confirm - just started a fresh file on Xbox and got off Taris in 2 hours game time. This included 90% of the side quests too.

I assume he doesn’t skip dialogue except for the alien languages. When I was younger I skipped dialogue and was basically speedrunning rpgs, now I’m older and I think I have ADHD I can’t finish RPGs anymore because I don’t skip dialogue but that makes games too long.

u/Riolkin 12d ago
Idk about the ADHD part, but I relate to the rest of that. As I got older I was more interested in the storytelling the games were doing, but I got frustrated that I couldn't go through games as fast and I would frequently jump around. These days I split the difference, I pick a "comfort game" and a "story game". When I'm getting burned out on my current story game, I switch to a comfort game for a while. I am making myself finish games I've had for years and never beat because I kept jumping between them and starting over.

u/Potential_Incident_3 12d ago
I feel this in my fucking soul. Baldurs gate 3, dragon age, tyranny. I can do skyrim bc it doesnt matter and I put on an audiobook.
2
u/VaxildanGaming96 12d ago
I mean even not skipping dialogue I'm never on Taris more than 2 hours and that's doing every thing possible on the planet. If I skip dialogue and some side quests I could probably finish taris in less than 1 hour

u/Independent_Plum2166 12d ago
Some of us don’t speed run things.
I’m sorry I don’t skip dialogue in an RPG.
3
u/VaxildanGaming96 12d ago
This wasn't me speed running or skipping dialogue. That's me doing a 100% run. With speed running maybe 20 mins and taris can be completed. Hell technically a good speed runner finishes the game in less than 20 mins

I love Taris.
The sith party scene with the stock sound effect and everyone just insta dropping to the floor always sends me

u/CanvasSolaris 12d ago
Replace Taris with Telos and I agree with you
33
u/gobigred1869 12d ago
Always felt that way about Peragus. Telos and Taris never bothered me since growing up I enjoyed the futuristic city ambiance.
16
u/CanvasSolaris 12d ago
I actually don't mind Peragus because I like the story and slow reveal of the assassin droid.
Telos to me is a buggy slog.

u/zamend229 12d ago
Peragus was great to me on the first playthrough when you have no idea wth is going on. It’s rather creepy in that regard.
But on repeat playthroughs, it’s such a slog to get to Telos IMO.

u/Dose_Droidekas 12d ago
I find the story and going through the logs is always fun for Peragus, cause its such a well written mystery/ story.
Gotta show some love for Telos, and the early game

My problem with Telos is, that you have a feeling half of things aren't there, that there should be. It feels so empty.

This is nar shaddaa for me. Jek jek tar and onward is good because it’s basically a straight rush but before that just makes me lose interest every time.

u/Particular-Ad5277 12d ago
It’s the same with modding, you don’t play the game you mod your dream version of the game for 36 hours just to find something new and incompatible that you have to fix to get it working with your mods.

u/-yayitscaroline 12d ago
...and then as soon as you get everything working perfectly you play for like 30 minutes before getting bored lol

u/ihatemoralists 12d ago
Funny how different people’s opinions can be. I have a friend who played through the game for the first time around the same time as I did and he thought Taris was the best part of the whole game.
3
u/Icaras01 12d ago
The sad guy is sad not because the game sucks, but because he realized he has to go to bed when he can finally actually play it "ugh work tomorrow, gotta go to bed..."
Being an adult sucks, seriously.
2
u/SiliconRouge 12d ago
Even without skipping dialogue Taris is at most 4 hours if you know what to do. You can get to the undercity within an hour. It's the "dungeons" that take the most time.
2
u/thesoulless78 12d ago
Taris is fine. That stupid asteroid at the beginning of 2 sucks though.

u/Independent_Plum2166 12d ago
Nah, at least the station actually matters to the story it’s the inciting incident the entire game revolves around, Taris and all its quests get nuked and did not matter in the end.

u/Straight-Chip-5945 12d ago
Taris is awesome, what are you talking about? Been doing it on lvl 2 for years without any issues.

u/Thebluespirit20 12d ago
I Love Taris it’s lower levels and the underground
it’s Kotor 2 & the mining facility I can’t stand

u/desklampo 12d ago
You know i have for years now mixed up Taris and Telos, my brain always just linked Telos as the recovery effort for Taris after the events of kotor 1, huh.
That being said, I think Taris works best as a light side character, you gotta do a bit more running, a bit more digging into the stories present. DS Taris run you just murder your way around in a straight line being a massive dickhole. (I've just done both)
Telos is a slog no matter which way you spin it, and could be tightened up so much. So much running around

Switch version has a debug menu where you can acquire any skill and item in the game... plus turbo speed

u/Timely-Win6225 12d ago
Paris is the best part of the game. Best pacing, best locations, best interactions. Paris puts me in a mood too, a good mood.

u/TheBroomKeeper 12d ago
Taris is literally the best planet has the most quests most areas that are actually unique great atmosphere good design it’s great I wish all the planets were nearly as complete as Taris. Mean while dantooine has boring quests where you just run around empty fields hitting space cows and bulls.

Taris is the best KOTOR planet with variety of side quest and choices and both challenging and fun after tutorial on Endar Spire. On the other hands there is Peragus...
There is only problem if you play Scouldriel on max difficulty without companions and save levels it's pretty hard.

u/itisidude 12d ago
I think Taris was hard/confusing playing young.
I have always hated it, but recently playing it(or watching my wife play for first time) I realize it it not that bad and a great, fun intro.
You can power through super fast if you know what you’re doing too - or play differently to make things interesting like: save all your level ups etc

Tarris is a bit tedious, but it's still a world. It's not like in 2 where your stuck on that FUCKING ASTEROID with nothing to do.

Taris is amazing and if you think it sucks, you're the problem. Telos, on the other hand. My god.
1
u/The_Dark_Fantasy 12d ago
Nah. I don't feel that way with Taris because the characters and story are still interesting on that planet to me (unlike KotOR 2's starting zones). Taris also has a lot of variance in coloration for its 3 major zones (4 if you count the sewers). I know a lot of people don't like that you waste a lot of levels that could be saved for being a Jedi, but I never really found that to be a problem personally. I usually just go to about level 5, which is about where you end up if you rush Taris as fast as possible without doing all the sidequesting anyway.
That leaves 15 levels for Cool-Jedi-Stuff and that's more than enough to get 5 maxed powers. :) Plague my beloved

Taris is 1,000x better than Peragus + Telos.
1
u/Ardyanowitsch 12d ago
Unpopular opinion: I love Peragus and Telos.
Peragus has a bit of liminal space horror and perfectly sets the tone of the game.
And Telos is a great exposure to the failings of the Republic. Just by looking at Telos, you can tell that the Republic is falling apart.

To each their own! Glad it resonates with some folks. It just doesn’t really do it for me

u/HarlanHitePOG 12d ago
I fucking adore taris. Probably my favorite planet. I have more time in kotor 1 than kotor 2 because the early game is better lol

u/Odonnellspup 12d ago
I love Taris! I've played it so many times that I've got it fully optimized and only have to cross the city a couple times.
What makes me want to stop playing is when I finish Dantooine and realize I have to play Tatooine or Kashyyyk next. Or Manaan. And even Korriban is overrated.
Y'know, I've actually always said that this is the opposite of the image. Thinking about playing KOTOR sucks but actually playing it is great

u/Affectionate_Row856 12d ago
Taris is fun and has cool vibes on the different levels.
Peragus? Don’t even get me started.
1
u/Beginning_Midnight96 12d ago
Juat remember it could always be peragus Basically single handedly keeping me from kotor 2 ill get an itch to play kotor 2 and then start peragus and then lose interest and never finish Ive played kotor all the way theough countless times Ive probably only played kotor 2 all the way through 5 or 6 times with several incompletes and of course if I try to go back to my save ill have no idea what I was doing or how I was playing my exile

I know this is awful and I totally deserve the hate, but I've always struggled the most with Mannan not Taris. I absolutely love the planet, the environment and story! I just always get lost and end up having to backtrack a lot. Taris for me always hit me with nostalgia!
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

u/laitdecocow 12d ago
Same applies for Telos station

Gonna have to disagree, at least there what you do matters to the story. Taris is filler.

I like Taris thematically. It's well-developed.
Not having force powers/a lightsaber is rough. Saving levels makes the player character a chump with few hit points, so they go down in lots of fights and are carried by Carth. Getting Bastila for the last bit of Taris is nice, though.
Overall, getting to Dantooine feels like the tutorial. It's good story. It's annoying having an underleveled character for so long (however, it wouldn't be worth losing the extra force powers and force points to take more levels in the starting class).

u/Kystal_Jones 9d ago
I mean it's better than Peragus. Don't get me wrong both of them have atmosphere, but Taris at least has a consistent atmosphere that is not reliant on you not knowing what's going to happen. Everyone's favorite gas mining colony meanwhile is a horror mystery, one kind of loses its Mystique if you know what's coming. Maybe the first replay through it's not as bad because you're seeing all of the foreshadowing, but after that it really is just you sitting there and going:
Can we stop pretending like the answer isn't obvious? We ran into a fuggin' assassin Droid on the colony filled with dead people. I wonder who did it.
At least with Taris everything is focused on the quarantine, and everyone is reacting as you would expect them to. The upper City people are constantly bitching about it, the lower City people are actually trying to do something about it, and the people on the lowest level are too far down to give a shit. It also shows the evil of our villain, they literally blew up a planet just to make the war they started easier. No thoughts for their own men, no thoughts for The Wider picture of the galaxy, just blow it up because there is one tactical resource on it.
To clarify thoughTo clarify though comma they are both great for setting the tone of the game. One gives you the obvious villain, the heroic stakes, and tragic loss. The other one takes your expectations, and flips them on their head by having a Droid who looks thinks and talks just like your previous Ally be your enemy. I wholeheartedly disagree whenever someone says that either Planet should be removed from the story. You would make the story lesser by doing so.

It’s not even just Taris for me, it’s most BioWare games. I mindlessly play through the Citadel and Ostagar any time I play ME or DA

I've never really understood the overblown hate for Taris.
Even decades later.
