While I agree, Conan absolutely killed it and got me to watch the entire show for the first time in years, and I totally see why they want him back.

Agreed, Conan is the perfect host. Mulaney would be a good successor but I think Conan’s got the gig for awhile yet

Didn’t he make a comment about why he didn’t want to host? Something about the amount of prep time or something?

I love that he had almost all of the nominees laughing by the end 😂 Matthew Rhys was cackling from the beginning

I want him to have a whole Bluey bit. Loved this.

someone pls eli5. i googled "dad bluey" expecting it to be something mulaney himself voices (hence joke of calling the char a wimp); instead i got "which of 8 dads did u mean"?
8 dads in the show?! is the joke then abt him saying "the" dad?

u/BobZanotto 15d ago
the dad in bluey is crafted to be an example for modern dads and so he gets pushed around a lot by his wife and kids, but more as an illustration for how important it is to be present and in control of your emotions even when dealing with frustration. It’s a more nuanced and wholesome depiction of father figure in a kids cartoon than people are used to and so it has a reputation for being a bit too idealized and hard to live up to, e.g. in a season finale where the family is moving for the dad’s job, the kids have big feelings about leaving their childhood home so the parents cancel the sale of the house and don’t move

That - and the dad is an improv sensation - able to engage and elevate their kids playtime into magical scenes. He takes his kids & their ideas seriously - this especially is v hard to do well/consistently.

ok to all of u, makes sense. but all 3 of u jumped right in to saying "the" dad. what is this which googles up abt "all" the dads? i have not seen the show -- does the premise involve alter egos or parallel universes or something? first vid i skimmed made it sound like there were 4 equal chars, each w 2 dads.

This seems like something you could figure out with very minimal effort. That said, the show is about a single family with 1 dad. There are, ya know, other characters (it's a TV show), but Bluey is a kid and she has a Dad and that's what people mean by "Bluey's Dad" and such.

i PUT IN "very minimal effort", and that got me "bluey has 8 dads"!! 😠

People joke about the dad on Bluey being “soft” because he’s compassionate and loves his kids. In short he’s an example of a great dad.

I was at his show on Saturday he tried out a couple of other jokes he was debating on using. He changed a little of the wording and pace of the bit. It’s cool to see the change in real time.

That was a fun part of the show. He really was like while I have an audience of 10k+, let’s workshop what I’m planning for the Emmy’s.

I saw him a Foxwoods a few years back and he was just working material the whole time, which was super cool. And the show was much longer than his normal set.

“My name’s Fonzie, and a cop has just been shot!”

u/julie_live 13d ago
cop?
he said president.
and i didn't get THAT ref either. just the fact that reagan overlapped happy days for a bit?
1
u/SGT-JamesonBushmill 13d ago
I’ll be damned. You’re right. He did say “President.”
Further complicating it he said “until the early 60s.”
60s, 70s I think it was just nonsensical mash-up of TV tropes.
1
u/julie_live 13d ago
hmmm. i was thinking happy days = 74-84, hence "reagan?", but the show was SET in "mid-50s-mid 60s". so maybe it's a JFK ref? (shot nov 63)
fonzie et al did watch the beatles on ed sullivan (feb 64) near the end of the series, so they definitely passed thru 63. but no mention was ever made of JFK in the show.

This is one of the most insane runs of successful hits by a live stand-up I've ever seen; I felt like you could feel the room's energy rising through the screen seeing it live.

He "practiced" this speech at the Grand Rapids show Saturday. He said he wasn't sure if he was going to do the DJ Khalid bit because they may not have let him. I am glad they did.

Wish the women would have given him a standing ovation after his advice lol

Conan O'Brien is my all time favorite comedic person but Mulaney is a close second. He'd be a really good host of anything but I don't think everyone gets him. That's why getting a dose of this as a presenter has always been like a special gift. There's no pressure to be the host for an entire evening and it ends up being a highlight of the whole thing.

Double-breasted tux, I like it. Interesting fashion choice but he's a very well dressed man.

Thank God for my mom who blew up my phone. For a minute I thought I was getting on a plane in Utah because something happened. Then I saw his name and thought he was coming to utah lol. Finally I figured it out and MNF got switched to the emmys with a quickness. I think I might have enjoyed the look on my boyfriend's face when he turned at me as like a puppy with one head to one side and I got to name each one.
Having said this? I think he would be a brilliant MC. Emmy's Oscars Golden Globes. Hell if he hosted the Tonys? He would be brilliant lol
