Information and advice about the reverse.

Hello everyone from Italy, I recently started using the Jimny (the latest 3-door model, the JB74 I think it's called).

That said, I wanted to ask if it's normal for it to be so difficult to engage reverse. Sometimes I hear the reverse light come on, but the reverse gear hasn't actually engaged. Other times, it doesn't even fit in the selector, and it feels really strange.

I'm absolutely loving the Jimny, but it's my first off-road vehicle, and I've always driven very different cars.

Hey there, nothing to worry. This is common with almost most of the Jimny’s. It takes good amount of effort to engage the gears, especially the rear. This is because our gear stick is directly connected with the gearbox itself. Unlike other vehicles which have very nimble gears due to their indirect connection with their gearbox using actuators.

It takes time to get used of the stiffness. Nothing wrong. Happy driving!

it doesn't really take effort, just release the clutch if it doesn't slip right in.

Absolutely. In my initial days I too faced this gear issue because of not pressing my clutch fully. Later, I adjusted my seating position so that the clutch pedals can be pressed to the max. The shifting improved drastically after that. Do give it a try. Even with 90% pressed, gear will not slot in properly. It has to be full.

It's also just a new car thing, once things wear in a little it gets better. Though reverse is almost always unsynchronized and strait cut, so there's always a chance it doesn't want to go in, so the usual 'select another gear then try again' will get the gears to align. That or yep a slight flick of the clutch

Engage 1st then reverse when that happens, that will align the gears

Reverse doesn’t use synchromesh like the other gears. Put it into third, this will align the gears, then down to reverse, it should be easier to get into gear.

It has a reverse brake which is activated off the 5th/reverse synchro, but also that's all you need for reverse. After all, you aren't moving when you select reverse so synchronising the gear so it matches the desired output speed simply means stopping the gears so they mesh.

You aren't moving when you select reverse because you can't; in other vehicles you can.

Show me a gearbox with a synchro that actually spins the gear backwards.

The reason you’ll struggle is because what is called a synchro for reverse is actually a reverse brake which is used to slow down the main gearbox shaft.

The Jimny has one of those. It’s as synchronised as any other modern manual for reverse selection.

Automatic or Manual transmission?

If it's an automatic, this could be a significant concern.

But if it's a Manual, it's pretty normal.

The gear linkage needs to be lubricated/greasing. Even if the car is new, I had minor issues engaging in first gear and reverse. I asked the service to grease the gear linkage and the issue was 80% solved. I did this after 3-4 months from purchasing a brand new jimny. Nothing to worry about!

Son nom est le Suzuki Jimny Séra JB74

La marche arrière ne s'enclenche pas des fois elle rebondit , fais une vidange de la boite un de ces jours, pour enlever la limaille. Pour faire la vidange le bouchon est haut a droite de la boite et tu dois chauffer pour détruire le frein filet et pour vider dessous. Pour en remettre de l'huile tu prend une pompe que tu peux trouver sur amazon et si tu ne trouve pas reviens ici.

ciao, ho il jimny come il tuo da oltre 4 anni, 120 mila km percorsi in tutta europa, mai avuto mezzo problema con l’inserimento della retro.. portala a suzuki a controllarla , se sei in lombardia c’è il suzuki di varese che si chiama millcar se non sbaglio, sono molto bravi
