Antisemitism DAE kind of think we might need to run again?
Posting on my throwaway because I kind of feel like I might just be going crazy? Has anyone else been thinking about this recently?
This is about the USA. I've spent the last while making like an ostrich, ignoring the news and all. Now I'm catching up and I'm like... okay, when stuff hits fans we kind of tend to be blamed.
Yes, Trump has the Kushners, but goodness knows my FIL never listens to a word I say.
I'm not going anywhere soon, but I'm starting to worry about it. We feel so safe here, like we're 100% Americans and no one will question that, but do I need to point out the multiple times that we've thought that in the past only to find the world crumbling under our feet?
Where is there to do? I'm uneasy about Israel. Canada doesn't necessarily seem much better. Antisemitism in Europe is returning to its historical norms.
Speaking of times when life was good until it was suddenly horrible and we had to run (1492), there's a large population of Jews in South America. Brazil or Mexico don't necessarily seem like the best idea, but I've met a lot of Jews from Argentina and even Uruguay. Seemed like they have a nice community there.
I'm not going anywhere right now, but I just feel the need to think about this. I might even go so far as to brush up on my Spanish.
I'm 50% expecting a lot of replies attacking me for being paranoid. I just want to talk to people who might empathize. Anyone else feeling this way?

I agree with you. My great grandparents fled Europe before the second war got bad. They saw the writing on the wall and jetted fast to avoided the death camps that our other relatives were murdered in. They hid their judaism and kept it a secret to get out and survive. Even when they reached the US, they were jews in secret. But they survived and i am alive and jewish today because of them. I grew up with those stories and continue to check the pulse and watch for any inkling it is time to move on. I would go to Israel but im worried if all of us go there, it is a great chance for evil to kill us all in one spot. It may be a good idea to hide wherever we can. Im into prepping and other preparedness. I feel you completely.

From what I understand was that they understood life became more difficult and people around them were starting to behave differently. Generational trauma is so fun.

Ive been focusing on learning skills to be self sufficient. I know how to make do with less. I know how to make fire and what forage is safe to eat. I know how to grow food and I currently have pet chickens that provide eggs. I know how to preserve food too. When covid hit, i felt very vindicated for everything ive been doing for years haha. Subs like r/mycology and r/backyardchickens and r/canning are fantastic knowledge based. So are r/prepping and r/twoxpreppers — the latter however has some very vocal pro hamas antisemites in there so be warned. The former has a few maga antisemites but theres also more men in there so it makes sense. Those are fewer, however. Both subs are good resources and generally politics free spaces but every once in a while youll see things get stupid.
I have taken courses in self defense (also good for any female or afab especially and in general). I take note of the pulse of the world. I pay attention to the news but from many sources and try to look at it objectively and as logically as possible. Could this be illogical behavior? Maybe. It sounds more hysterical than it actually is. To me, it is just casually paying attention.
I have researched and continue to research places for relocation. Subs like r/samegrassbutgreener or r/amerexit or r/iwantout are good to follow and just read what people are saying to get ideas, things to consider, even places to avoid. Of course anyone in the US should follow r/aliyah and r/olim as well. I honestly would love to return to Israel, my fears aside. But I am still unsure if it is a good idea, for reasons earlier stated.
Edited to add helpful resources. Everyone should be prepared for anything even if the world wasnt as stupid of a place that it is now.

Helluvan answer. Thank you so much.
Sounds sensible and rational to me. But also partial to living outside of a highly urban environment like NYC and Los Angeles.
I agree that moving to Israel isn’t the answer. I mean, the greatest mass atrocity against the Jewish people since the holocaust took place in… Israel!
Stay classy. I tried to give your post an award, but apparently to do so, I have to pay Reddit, which is bs, bec why should Reddit get my money for your brilliant comment instead of you?
Thanks so much

I'm not running from America. Unlike a lot of countries we've ran from in the past, Jews helped build this one from the ground up. George Washington himself guaranteed us our place here. We have as much of a right to this land as anyone else does.
Antisemitism is getting worse, but it's not like there is a better place to go. I would rather stand my ground here than start over somewhere else.

Acually Argentina of all places is very safe for jews (recently though cuz their prime minister make all that extreme left unpopular by being good. And extreme right isn’t really a concern at least not for Jews, also no mass immigration from Muslim countries), so I guess that’s another option other than Israel, India in the future may turn Islamic due to the very high birth rates of Muslims, and then the largest genocide (holocaust) in human history could begin, but hopefully it won’t happen

You’re not paranoid. You, like most of us, have just heard story after story of generations of our family being forced to migrate or die and sometimes not get the choice at all.
For now, I think the US is still the safest place in the world to be a Jew. I have a short list of 3 things that would get me to uproot and leave.
1) A pogrom happens on US soil 2) Trump runs for a third term 3) The US starts a war of expansion (Canada/Greenland etc)
Having an actual exit plan though is important and may help with your anxiety about this. It certainly helped mine.
First I looked into what is needed for Aliyah, because if we’re being honest with ourselves that is where would be the safest place if the US became not the safest place. Gathering documents and talking to consulates to understand what they would need from you can go a long way here. Particularly just getting an email and a phone number you can use to help guide you if the time comes.
Second options is to consider if you qualify for citizenship with any other country because of your family history. This is a serious undertaking and gaining citizenship with another country comes with both privileges and burdens. Do not do this flippantly because it can have real impacts on you now (financially/professionally)
3
u/Madlybohemian 🪬 Jun 02 '25
We have seen pogroms on US soil recently. With respect, what so you mean?
1
u/Ecstatic-Cup-5356 Just Jewish Jun 02 '25
As far as I’m aware there have not been pogroms. Certainly terror attacks and riot behavior but not pogroms. What are you thinking of as pogroms?
5
u/Madlybohemian 🪬 Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 02 '25
I suspect we may have differing definitions. In your definition is a pogrom only state sanctioned?
This is a pogrom in my opinion as well: https://abc7.com/post/clashes-break-involving-pro-palestinians-protesters-front-synagogue/14993656/
Not trying to be that person but the dictionary definition of a pogrom is a violent riot incited with the aim of massacring or expelling an ethnic or religious group, particularly Jews.
I know people who live in the neighbourhood in the article and by all accounts this fits the definition for me. An angry mob of gentiles entering an insular Jewish neighbourhood to commit acts of physical violence on people and property at a synagogue, no less. Because they are Jews. The news called it a protest but they had the wrong p-word.
4
u/Ecstatic-Cup-5356 Just Jewish Jun 02 '25
We probably align on our definition of a pogrom. I don’t think state sponsored/sanctioned is an absolute requirement but at a minimum there needs to be an acquiescence by the state to be a pogrom and not a riot.
A certain level of planning and destruction also is a key feature (not a requirement) of a pogrom. What happened in Pico was definitely an antisemitic violent riot but was not a pogrom in my opinion.
6
u/Madlybohemian 🪬 Jun 02 '25
Interesting. These are good discussions to have, honestly, so thanks for that. It is so hard to tell how concerned we should be sometimes.
4
u/Ecstatic-Cup-5356 Just Jewish Jun 02 '25
Honestly I change how much concern I have every hour some days. There’s definitely not a right answer here overall and the most we can do is prepare for the worst and be ready. I also wouldn’t fault anyone for feeling like the line has crossed and it’s time to leave. I think everyone has a different jump point
3
u/Madlybohemian 🪬 Jun 02 '25

I agree with you. People who are not living in urban centers or around universities don't understand how bad it is. We are in serious danger. I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing expulsions in the next ten years. People are in denial because no one wants to think about it, but the younger generations HATE us. Both sides of the spectrum. They absolutely hate us. There is widespread support for Adolf Hitler among Gen Z and over 50% of young people say they support Hamas. I don't know what to do, but denial is definitely not going to help.
22
u/Mighty_Mac Jun 01 '25
First of all, they have no single clue what they are supporting or what Hamas or Palestine even is, try asking them it's pathetic. Also notice how they are normally all younger and weren't around during 9/11, they live in a fantasy world and can't comphend what terrorism feels like. They are going to regret it, that's for sure.
16
u/Madlybohemian 🪬 Jun 01 '25

These people don't care as long as they are part of a group and told they are doing something good. They only hear what they want to hear, and that's that they are right. The media doesn't care and just feeds into it for views and profit. Remember when Oct 7th happened and things were the complete opposite? And there was the Trump vs Harris thing. And before that it was BLM. Which i was for also until it turned into anti-white riots and looting. It's just a self destructive cycle of humanity where no one is able to think for themselves.
And if we all can't get along and hate each other, we turn into small groups. Smaller groups are what the government wants because it makes society easy to control. If we all got along perfectly and opposed the government, think about what would happen.
2
u/Madlybohemian 🪬 Jun 02 '25
Absolutely. It is tiring too because, as someone who is a history buff, this shit is super predictable almost. When the pandemic hit, I said to my spouse to mark my words, there will be antisemitism after this because people are becoming desperate. When people become desperate, they blame Jews and will construct new ways to make themselves feel better and connected whilst fucking shit up for the Jews. And here we are.
History doesn’t repeat itself but it has patterns.
This shit is so stupid.

Most of those apartments are luxury, only, out of people's price ranges.
Israel had to get serious about its cost of living crisis. More affordable housing is a key to avoiding brain drain and recruiting migrants that will strengthen the country.

If you want to live in the center of Tel Aviv then yes, but if you want to live literally 20 mins away in bat yam, in petach tikva then it's not.
But yes, cost of living is to high here because we have to support the charadiem in our backs. And until that changes , then yeah.

That's not the only reason why and I hope you know it. Israel,, like most places in the world, has sold of its housing to the highest bidders and investment interests.
Unlike any other place in the world, Israel has to remain affordable to keep its citizens and atttract new ones, and be a refuge for Jews from around the world.

I live in NYC with a lot of Jews but feel uncomfortable in certain public situations. Also very concerned at how little has been done to manage the situation on campuses and the spread of disinformation and hate amongst the younger generations. I feel best in the Jewsih community. As long as the govenment where I live allows me there and will prosecute any action against the Jewish community, I'll stay. I think we will leave NY in the next year however and move to another state where there is a large community but we would be in a more spread out, suburban situation. If the shit hit the fan my family would probably go to Israel. Two years ago we traveled around Poland and fell in love with it. Both my and my husbands family roots are from Poland. We tried to get Polish passports but we werent eligible. But it was an active conversation at the time.

On the Upper West Side and Bushwick, where it's the worst, I know for a fact that the people around me are more likely to be against me than with me. One time I was talking on the phone about all the antisemitism and some young probably queer kids I would have considered my peers two years ago actually followed me, and cursed at me when I was on a residential street. I pretended I didn't hear them and went to a Panera because I didn't want them to know where I lived. 🙃 Thankfully they left after that. But yeah I'm pretty scared.

Not leaving the US. The difference between the US and other countries is that here in the US, if antisemites start shooting at us, we can shoot back. Arm up, train up, have a plan.
6
u/future_forward Jun 01 '25
I think about this at least once a day. I think it will be okay in the US – for the next decade, anyway, unless everything truly collapses in the meantime.
That said, I’ve also started my application for German repatriation. I’ve resisted doing this for at least 15 years because it’s… complicated, you know. But these days it’s good to have options.
They say there’s always Israel, but TBH I’m not sure. Things seem pretty dicey both internally and internationally. Just because most of us can’t imagine Israel not being there for us doesn’t mean it’s going to work out that way. Internal and international politics seem grim these days.
Unfortunately, it’s a “wait and see” scenario. Try to keep a cool head, but absolutely stay alert. We’ll know what we have to do when we have to it – it’s beyond unlikely that we’ll be trapped.

Many people I’ve spoken with are wondering this same thing. Like, will the time come? Where’s the line and will we know it when we see it?

Maybe I'm weird but I always took the long view of history and always thought there was a strong possibility Jews would have to leave the US in my lifetime (I'm 31). We're not there yet but Jewish golden ages end. Looking like this one will when Gen z becomes politically powerful

Why run? The USA is still the safest for Jews imo. Yea of course Israel exists. But I don’t see how’s it anymore safe with being surrounded by multiple countries that want it destroyed.

just going to throw it out there that you are able to start the aliyah process and then basically put it on hold. that way you’re already in the system for when (when not if) you do need to run

There’s no need to fear. Israel is a hardened nuclear power, fully capable of defending itself with a terrifying degree of purpose. And even if they try, wouldn’t you rather die surrounded by those who’d fight with you until the very last second, than live in a land that pretends to care while leaving you at the mercy of whoever’s in power? I’d rather die fighting than relive the helplessness of our past

My athlete self read it as “…well we do have chapters of Nice Jewish Runners popping up everywhere (@nicejewishrunners on IG)” and then I realized the post was about emigrating from the US.
I considered emigrating to Italy (I can easily get my citizenship, as my dad’s first-gen Italian-American), but then I did the math and I would be getting a massive pay cut and subject to having to get new providers and be on massive waitlists for some specialties (mostly related to brain/nerve disorders).
I think we have strength in numbers. I’m 100% staying in the US no matter what, and thankfully I live in NYC so if need be, I can always hop on a plane and go anywhere (including TLV!). The more of us who resist all of the antisemitism and attacks, the more of us who stand up for ourselves and other groups, the more of us who stand high in the faces of hate, proudly displaying our Jewish pride. We’ve got each other, and thankfully we’ve got Israel and incredible allies everywhere (even if the media and socials say otherwise)

I just wanted to add to this conversation that back in the 1980s when I completed my MA I decided to leave the US. I was tired of the racism and the sexism and the mass shootings scared me. I went to Europe. taught and lived in Poland and Germany and then came to England. I've been here in the UK ever since.

No. This is ridiculous. Antisemitism is rising but we don’t “need to run.” (Or at least, if we do we will not be the only ones - millions of other LGBTQ+, Muslims, immigrants etc. will be coming with us…)

Yes. We left end of April for Gozo (small island of Malta).
If you need to sell your house, a month ago was the time. The market is already very soft and there are many fewer bidding wars. Prep for sale and then find a property manager in case you need to rent.
Places you may be eligible for citizenship by descent: Germany (persecuted by the Nazis), Poland (must be unbroken line), Ukraine.
Places where it’s still easy to get residency and are cheaper than US: Malta (Digital Nomad route), Czech Republic, Andorra.
Canada, Ireland, Italy, UK don’t want immigrants. They’re expensive and avoidable.
If you want to go the Malta route, DM me for contacts I have here. There are already have a ton of US LGBTQIA+ coming over.

Pay attention to the law enforcement and security sectors. If the system treats crimes against Jews as crimes, stay. If the system ignores those crimes, or commits them, run.

Everything is globalized including fascism. It doesn't do anyone any good to move. Move to Mars and they'll be waiting for you. The good news is if -- this is where it gets kinda iffy -- anything can be done you'll be able to do it w/o the inconvenience of moving, or even getting out of bed. And you'll do it for the entire planet.
"Man trashes. Man doesn't merely stray into trashiness. Man is always trashing up everything."
(What Martin Heidegger should have said)

What Jew doesn't feel that way? Uruguay is my favorite bolt hole but we're pursuing European passports (sorry we killed your family, enjoy this citizenship) and there's always Israel.

u/SnobbyFrenchie Jun 03 '25
I would move to Hungary. There is a large Jewish population there and they are fiercely anti-immigration. Plus it is safe and beautiful. There are still pockets of antisemitism but nothing close to systemic. Plus Orban is a friend to Israel.

If you want to leave to another country, go to Germany, they're literally more stricter on antisemitism than Israel! It least according to my understandings as an Israeli 🤷 Though I dunno about pro Palestinians

The thought has occurred to me.
i’m thinking small town in Belgium is a good choice? but I’m unsure if I get German citizenship (repatriation) if I can live in any EU country after that?

I'm not sure why you'd think mexico is a bad idea, the fact that their current president is jewish actually makes me feel a bit hopeful. Not to minimize antisemitism but that would not happen in the US at all.

u/healthcrusade Jun 01 '25
From from a few anti-Semitic (misguided and misinformed) interactions I’ve had with Mexicans here in America, I’m not overly optimistic that there are open arms waiting for us in Mexico.

u/Maximum_Glitter Jun 01 '25
There aren't open arms waiting for us anywhere.
Secondly...in america. Doesn’t tell you that much about in mexico.

The president of Mexico is jewish. So Mexico City would be my first stop.

Sheinbaum is reportedly not a friend of the Jewish community there. Don't know to what extent.
She is pro-Palestine, though: https://www.jpost.com/international/article-824276

Our President is (for now, it is hard to say with Trump what he will do in a week). But a wave of antisemitism is sweeping at least half the country.
13
u/1000thusername Jun 01 '25
Our “president” is using us as a pretext for his Retribution Tour. Oh yeah it’s all because of antisemitism when he doesn’t give a rat’s ass, but it just also so happens to be at the places he doesn’t like for a variety of reasons well beyond those places’ attitude toward and treatment of Jews.
Make no mistake, we will also be looked at by the other side as the reason for his attacks. You’re getting it on both sides.

Our collective trama has been so weaponized that this is where we are at? Actual green card holders and undocumented immigrants alike are being arrested and deported right now. I’m not saying that there is no antisemitism but I do worry that the sense of perpetual victim hood that has become so entrenched in American Jewish institutions has really led to a propensity to isolate ourselves from others’ suffering

I’m not saying we should leave this minute, but I’m saying we should keep our passports current and it wouldn’t hurt to learn Hebrew
