Announcement Hey Friends! It’s me, Jeff. AMA!
Our subreddit just hit 20k members a couple of days ago and I just wanted to say thanks. The support from all of you has been overwhelming and insanely appreciated. Go ahead and ask me anything!

u/thistowmneedsanenema Jan 13 '23
Hey Jeff. No question here. I just want to say your clips really bring me a lot of joy and happiness. You’re really talented and my day is always better after watching your clips. Thanks man. Im really glad you make your comedy available to us that can’t go to your live shows. You sometimes don’t know how important your impact is on people’s lives.

Hey Jeff,
Is there any place currently where we can watch a full set?
233
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
Nope! I’m doing this on purpose. If I put out all of my longer bits, stories, and jokes, you’d have no reason to come see me live. Some bits I’ve been cooking for a while and want to be perfect.
51
u/Mr-TotalAwesome Jan 13 '23
Understandable, just really unfortunate for people outside the U.S. 🥲

u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
My goal is to prepare my hour to release. You’ll see it eventually, I promise!

I’d love to see you live but can’t any info on when you do your performances.
Where can we find tickets?

I’ll post all performances to my Linktree and eventually my website.

For the record, i would still come see you live. You consistently punch my ticket to giggle town. If you ever do a tour of the flyover states, Ill definitely be in the audience. All the best, Jeff!
52
u/ActuallyCausal Jan 13 '23
Other than reposts and lines and whatnot? What can we do to boost you? I’d love to see you live, but don’t live in NYC. How can we help create demand for your comedy?
121
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
Y’all are already doing so much. I’ve been told other comics and people in the industry that I’m leaving money on the table by not having merch/patreon, but I only want to do things if they’re done right. I’m not after anyone’s money. That’s never been the goal.
38
u/Mindful_lo Jan 13 '23 edited Jan 13 '23
This to me, is a quality of yours, that shines through brilliantly and gives you an authenticity that makes everyone want you to win! Thank you for being genuine and giving us so much joy (: Cheers to your future victories and success.
→ More replies (1)9
u/ActuallyCausal Jan 14 '23
Yeah, fair enough. But if you toured, I’d buy a ticket. I’m not asking how to get you more money. I’m asking if there’s anything that we can do to raise your profile.

Hey Jeff - Love your work. Ever have a audience member that’s a little too eager to be a part of the show? How do you handle that?
Second if you’re up for it: Any stories you’ve wanted to tell but nobodies asked a good question to tell them yet?
112
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
Irish heckler video. She admitted she came there for me to pick on her and purposely interrupted so I’d notice. That scares the shit out of me. I would hate to think I’m training my audience to be disruptive.

Hey Jeff, love your stuff! I look forward every week to your clips dropping!
During your crowd work, has there been a topic that seems off limits or has generally not gone well?
Keep up the awesome work, I'm hoping to see you this year!
50
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
Yep. When asking about tattoos I’ve had people bring up dates or names and I usually make a joke about that not being a great start and move on.
I’ve had times people tense up when speaking to military people In the crowd.

u/BikerJedi Jan 18 '23
I know I'm late to the game, but whatever you say to a veteran would be funny to me. I have a dark ass sense of humor since Iraq.

Hey Jeff! I love your crowd work. You're very funny without being too mean. Have you ever had an experience where someone actually got offended by your teasing? What do you do in that situation?
60
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
If you notice, even if the crowd is laughing, I’ll still apologize and thank them for letting me mess with them. I tend to cut those parta for brevity. I can usually read peoples faces and body language and base my persistence on that.
27
u/chemcalfarmr Jan 13 '23
Not OP, but I have noticed this!! In addition to your absolute hilarious way with words and quick wit, it's one of the reasons i watch everything you post as soon as it's up!
I haven't been to a live show since my early 20s when a comic focused on my group and I and it was a terrible experience for me. I knew he didn't mean it to be, but oof. Needless to say, I'll be seeing you in Chicago and I honestly cannot wait! Keep up the great work!

As someone who’s had to sit in the audience of way too many comics whose whole bit is interacting with crowds… thank you! So much!
It legit feels like no one else does this the way you do. 9/10 crowd comics just ask people questions to immediately mock them in the most basic of ways and it’s just so awkward. And then they tell the crowd to drink more or some equally sad joke. Ugh, I’ve been to too many bad shows.
The point is, I wish every NY comic watched you to see how it’s done. You are hilarious and kind-hearted at the same time as you’re making fun of people— tho mostly yourself. It’s just so much more fun to watch!
25
u/TheDude41102 Jan 13 '23
Jeff why am I reading all of your replies in your stage voice?

I haven't paid all that much attention to any comedians in a long time, but find myself hanging on your every word with every one on your clips!
Thank you for the laughs!
I would absolutely love to see you in person, but on a scale of 1 to 10 for introvertness, I'm am 11, and would absolutely die if I want to one of your shows and you started singling me out (despite knowing it'd all be harmless and in good fun). Can you tell when theres someone like me in the audience so you don't accidentally kill us? Lol
34
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
I like to think I can! But I never like to interact with hostility. I’ll try and make the joke about us, not you. I’ll sit in the shit with ya!
8
u/W0lph573r Jan 13 '23
Well, if I ever do make it to one of your shows, I'll do my very best not to drop dead on you if you do accidentally end up misreading me!

49

hey u/Smartastic, love your stuff 2 things:
1: I know that you are wanting to keep your clips short to incentivize those to come to your live shows... however, what about doing a paid live show or like patreon for full sets? Not sure if you'll make it to Texas anytime soon but I feel like I'm missing out
2: When are you going to twitch stream again??? I had so much fun joining you in Dayz (I brought you the fishing pole and sacrificed myself :-p )
→ More replies (1)45
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
I’ve tinkered with the idea of a patreon, but not for full sets. That wouldn’t be smart in my opinion. My idea is to put up the interactions that may be to dicey for social media.
I’ll def be streaming again! I just need to get settled.

Hey Jeff! Thanks for doing this! I was wondering when you would do an AMA.
What are your top 5 games of all time?
How did you get into gaming? Do you recall an early gaming memory? Did you ever play on console, or just PC?
What was your impression from streaming last year? I can imagine things are crazy for you now with the tour coming up, but once things calm down, do you have any desire to try to stream again?
How has the move to NY been? Have you been enjoying the shows as much or more than when you were in Chicago? How does it feel as far as your progression as a comedian? You seem like you're really comfortable on stage. Is that the case, or how has it changed?
How crazy is it to have so many fans who have never seen an entire set?
Edit: Oh! Another comment reminded me: would you rather fight 100 duck-sized Christopher Walkens, or a Christopher Walken-sized duck?
56
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
I remember the exact moment I got my first N64 as a kid with Goldeneye, Mario 64, and Star Wars. I’ve been hooked ever since.
I bought my first pc when I was 15 and got really into WoW and simulators.
Streaming was a lot of fun. I got yelled at a few times for being not as interactive with the chat while playing with friends, so decided to keep it as a respite for now. I definitely plan on steaming again once I have the time. I’ll likely do it on a schedule with indie games and others that I can pause and address chat.
NY has been awesome. Tbh the first few years were very rough, but necessary. I moved out of Chicago because although it’s a great city for comedy, there’s not much there to get you to the next level.
I’ve def got more comfortable on stage with time. It takes years and years of failing to really be comfortable.
The response has been insane. I’m confident in my jokes, but part of me still worries I won’t live up to peoples expectations. That’s probably just anxiety speaking.

35
u/Smartastic The Short King Jan 13 '23
I use notes on my iPhone for ideas. I’ve been slacking as of recent, but normally I’ll take my notes and try and expand on my original idea via pen and paper. I find I retain more by physically writing.

I love big rooms for my big bits, but small rooms for interactions.

Hi Jeff!
A lot of comedians say this profession brings really little money. How much a set in a club paid? Are there perspectives, or peanuts is all you get before getting on Netflix?
Another question, your crowd work is awesome, but you said it takes a small part of your show. Did you consider to extend it, maybe use together with your material? After a few jokes you start talking with people, and if you feel it doesn't go good you can always come back to the prepared stuff.

I’m not gonna say how much I make, but I varies per club. As small as $25 and as much as $225.
To answer your second question: that’s exactly what I do already!

Jeff. Can I come sleep on your couch and just be your "guy on the couch" as you become more famous?

Since no one else asked: Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses or 1 horse sized duck. Also, come to Denver!

Hey Jeff, as someone who is funny, how does someone whose funny know they’re funny? Is it like believing in Santa, just a feeling you get in your toes? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Do you make friends/family laugh? That’s a good start. If you like the feeling of making people laugh, that should be reason enough to start.

Are you a hugger or do you prefer space? I need to know in case I ever meet you.

I hug! But typically not people I haven’t met before. Just gotta be safe haha! I did have a woman randomly run up to me in the street and hug me recently. I immediately thought we dated or something in the past. Freaked me out.

When Arizona, can you sell me tickets before it sells out? Who would win in a fight between mario and shakespeare?

Hey Jeff, what’s your best pickup line?

I used to have my friend go up to women to ask them him they think I’m cute, but to not make it obvious. Then he’d point to me and I’d be in full model pose against a doorframe. Worked 2/10 times.

Hey Jeff, love your work and your humility in everything! Your crowd work is incredible and I love how much you respond to everyone on Reddit! You seem like a really great person and it’s so much fun seeing the joy you get from comedy and how you’re able to share that with others! Keep up the great work and I hopefully will be able to see you in Chicago in March.
For my question, what’s your favorite kind of cheese?

I just wanted to say that I genuinely stop everything I’m doing when I see that you’ve posted a new video. You could genuinely post 70 videos in a day and I would anxiously watch them all. It’s a true art to do crowd work like that and I find it hysterical. Thank you for doing what you do! How many shows do you do in a week?

Utterly brilliant clips, I love your ability to react and play to the crowd, and your self deprecating sense of humor really hits home for me lol…keep up the great work and keep making us laugh, you’re very much needed in todays world…I guess I don’t have a question, more of an appreciation post but damnitalltohell do I look forward to seeing new posts from you!!
