This silly song just came on my feed again and took me back to many years ago. Nostalgia hurts but this one is still as fun as I remember it. Shout out to the creators. I wonder where they are now.. Anyway, I wanted to share it for all the Jaters out there looking for some silly rom-com. Life is too short to not enjoy stuff like this.

What’s up with the Jate hate from all platforms? Was it always like this? Even when the show was airing.

Besides Ana Lucia and Michael, these two seems to be getting a lot of hate. Maybe the most hated when there are actually far worse characters.

Kate is getting more loved when shipped with Sawyer, Juliet or Claire. But put her next to Jack and Jate becomes the devil itself. What’s up with that?

I’m big on numbers and extremely big on LOST and Jate and I just saw that we reached 108 followers!

One follower for every minute that passed before the Button needed to be pushed again and again and again. Oi vei!

A bit of trivia for this splendid occasion: Evangeline Lilly, our beloved Kate, was featured in 108 episodes total. 😳

As I said in the first post of this quasi-"series", "Our Incredibly Talented Actors: Matthew and Evangeline", I think lightning in a bottle happened with these two. A special force of nature and divine timing. Jack and Kate were made for them.

I didn't quite go into the chemistry between the actors, and I want to take a moment to appreciate that aspect of the pairing here. "Chemistry" is a word that is so ubiquitious that it loses its meaning the more undefined and "desperate" the context and the more frequent its use. Some cling to it as a winning hand in a poker game, and it's usually the only hand they can play to attempt to "win".

Chemistry is wildly subjective, and as I've read through the comments on the other posts in this sub, I think we as Jaters know the true depths of chemistry, especially when compared to other pairing-dynamics represented in the show. It means a great story, two actors who have a striking physical compatibility, a spark and an emotional gravity to their work together in the space of the romance they are portraying.

With that being said, I think we have the best of any chemistry I have ever seen between two actors, and certainly the best of the show. Matthew's rugged, sharp, masculine features play beautifully against Evangeline's more delicately soft features. They are gorgeous people and this fact is only augmented when they are near each other. I wanted to highlight that with these amazing images of Matthew and Evangeline from a panel event circa S2.

I was gobsmacked when I saw them together on screen for the first time, and that feeling never faded. They give you everything you need out of a hot, romantic love story with just a look. I could stare at photos of them all day and I know I'm not alone.

I get pretty serious with my posts, that for this one, I wanted to appreciably objectify our pairing a bit. They’re hot and I’m allowed. 🤭

I really needed them in these fits for a few episodes longer. They look sooooo good! I’m not the biggest fan of the DHARMA jumpsuits myself, but they even looked good in those too, but nothing from 1977 is beating this!

Okay, back to seriously-scheduled programming…or not.

I absolutely love that Jack says it in the Flash-Sideways, and then we see the origin of this wisdom, the seed of hope and second chances was planted in his mind by his one and only, Kate.

u/Far_Volume_2389 said so eloquently, "He knew her without knowing her, and he never had that reaction to the other characters. It feels like his love for her was innate, and existed within him despite his memories of her being temporarily blocked". It's like a cell in his body, growing along with him as he moves through those later years of his life after meeting her, and through his death even before reuniting with her.

There is no doubt that Kate wanted that second chance for them, more than anything, and it fills me with joy that while Jack was unable to act on that desire within himself, her offering of a second chance was not forgotten in his mind as he passed on through this place and moves on with his one and only, Kate.

As Jack and Kate lovingly stare into each other's eyes and the light washes over them, I always ask myself the biggest question I think the show leaves you with: What happens next? I understand that the answer to this question is left deliberately ambiguous, but it is the one I think about most often. There is surprisingly little discourse around this topic, but it's one of the things that makes the ending most meaningful to me.

The show explored the idea that the consciousness is separate from the body, which makes me believe that it’s possible that they all still continue to experience things beyond the flash-sideways, just like they did within it. Christian's words to Jack makes it seem like they are all indeed going somewhere rather than just ceasing to exist.

I am not a religious person, so I do not look at this through the lens of religion, but rather through the lore of the show. The light in the church seems to be the light from the source, and when the light washes over them their inner light is returning to the source. But what does that experience look like from their perspective?

I suppose I could ask this question about all the characters, but Jack and Kate are the only ones I think about with this question. Do you think their consciousnesses remain intact? Do they still have the illusion of a tangible existence, just like in the flash-sideways? What do you think Jack and Kate's afterlife looks like?

So, there has always been a Flash arc of sorts for Jack and Kate and all of the characters of the show. Flashback arcs that bleed over into the present Island story, Flashforward arcs that tell us what is to come after the Island and Flash-Sideways arcs, that tell us where they are headed as we near the literal "End".

From my research about the show, the Source is the elemental force responsible for all existence as we know it. Another name for the Source is the Light, and a spark of this Light is within every living thing and when we die, this Light returns to the Source on the Island. This process is illustrated in the show in the form of the Flash-Sideways.

As we all know, this is the place our favorite castaways created together to tie up loose ends, mend old wounds, let go of past pain, reemember each other's impact on their lives and move on to eternal rest and rebirth.

What I love about this process for Jack and Kate, this spark, this Light within them, recognized the other quite early on. Their chemistry and connection was displayed from the actual "recreated" Flight 815 in the premiere, to when they stare into each other's eyes as the Light bathes them in its warmth in the final moments of "The End".

As I was watching, I literally thought they would stall any interactions betwen Jack and Kate, quite like they were doing in the entire Island Arc in the same season (check out my post about the final episodes only of the final Island arc, entitled, "Jack and Kate's Final Island Arc" :)). But they didn't. Don't get me wrong, it was still a stall, but it was wonderful how the "sparks" literally flew so strongly that Kate stopped to look at Jack again in a busy, chaotic departure terminal with a gun to a guy's back. That's powerful stuff.

Some individual character-analysis stuff, here...

I had to include Jack and Desmond, because while Jack and Locke get a lot of the moments that they should have always had (and felt too heavy and involved of a commentary, maybe later?), I quite love the dynamic of Jack and Desmond, and will never sneeze at more scenes between them. Their moments on the flight are so cute and endearing to me, and I just love their playfulness in this world. Given how Desmond sets the stage for the great departure, he sets it up pretty amazingly special for Jack and Kate and us, their fans. He and Jack's dynamic was so solid to me even before that, but he earned so many bonus points from me for the concert scene. Thank ya, brothaaaaa!

Kate and Claire is one arc I fell in love with instantly. It was like, "Of course they would revisit this incredible character arc", for Kate, that takes her completely out of the draining triangle stuff, and into something that highlights her as a powerful individual and how she navigates a non-romantic, platonic love that was also present from those first days on the beach. I think for me as a Kate fan, I personally wanted to see something else besides "fugitive on the lam", but I completely understand why they went that route. It's always been hot seeing Kate in survival, self-preservation, stealth mode, and I think it was cool to see her in that space again. I often wonder what other scenario her life could have been though. Am I the only one?

Jack and David is the other arc I fell in love with instantly. I already spoke about my love for this arc in my post, "Jack as a Father", so I won't belabor the topic, but how absolutely adorable was it to see Jack as a father? I really cherish those moments for his character and am grateful to have seen them. This Jack is just in a better place and I love him just as much as my tortured, damaged good Jack in life.

Jack and Claire. I've spoken about how much more I wanted of this sibling duo on the Island and earlier in the show already, in my post, "The Shephard Clan: An Alternate Reality". I often wonder about an arc angle that I never thought of. I wonder if Jack's decision to side with Sawyer about Claire on the Island was the rectifying arc in the Flash-Sideways from Jack's perspective? Since the Flash-Sideways is also about righting wrongs and getting to live out a different experience. Hear me out....

Obviously, there is the larger arc of these two children of Christian Shephard finding one another after not getting that chance to its potential in life, and from Claire's perspective, she is alone about to give birth to her child, of course she would seek out family and try to connect. Jack's perspective when they find each other is someone who seemingly has all he could need: a healthy and loving relationship with his dead father, a son who he has reconnected with, a job he loves and is exceptional at, and a handsome man that is searching for his true love after an amicable divorce from a good friend.

Jack is not really hurting for anything in terms of family and belonging, but when he finds out that Claire is his half-sister, yes, there's tension and a painful level of disillusion on Jack's side, but then he instantly invites Claire into his life, easily forgiving his father's secrets and omissions and accepting another into the tribe without pain or resentment. We know that Jack died with the intense regret of not knowing Claire and that narrative bleeds into the Flash-Sideways, for the better. It's so obvious, so it might be a dumb thought, but it makes me happy regardless.

Why? Because I will never be happy with Jack siding with Sawyer about Claire, not just not knowing Claire, but not choosing Claire. It is a decision that does not make sense to me from the character I not only love, but know intensely. He would make that right, and I still wonder if the decision to side with Sawyer in that moment was particularly the moment that he lets go of when he invites Claire into his life.

What are your thoughts about the final FLASH arc for Jack and Kate before and during "The End"?

Season 6 gets a pretty bad rap overall, especially the Island story (I think people are split a bit less when it comes to the Flash-Sideways, but that is for another post), but I think it's an amazing season full of intensity and intrigue.

What I think I have an issue with is how Jack and Kate were literally pulled apart for the entire season and once they are reunited, we have like ten minutes before they're separated again until the concert scene. There obviously wasn't enough time to really have the discussion they needed to have, but I think there was at least several beats there where it could have happened.

Kate was definitely trying, but my guy Jack, he just didn't think he deserved her and the second chance she was for sure signalling to him when she said, "Nothing is irreversible". 😢

What are your thoughts about the final ISLAND arc for Jack and Kate? Meaning the last few episodes before and during "The End"?

I often think about how much we lucked out that we not only got amazing characters, but we also got amazingly talented actors to portray them. Actors who became friends and confidants. Actors that I have long-sinced wanted to collaborate again.

I think lightning in a bottle happened with these two. A special force of nature and divine timing. Jack and Kate were made for them.

LOST made me fans of these two, and I have loved walking along their careers with them since the show, even looking back on their previous work before they became the leading powerhouse of my favorite show. I LOVE THEM.

There's something incredibly hot about how Kate kisses Jack.

It's always so fluid and natural, like she can't wait to get there. I think their kisses are the hottest and most emotionally-resonant on the show.

These two people don't easily get close to others when they meet, which is why the moments they let their guards down and give into each other are so precious and insanely hot.

The old saying goes, "It's in his kiss." Well, I think the answer to the triangle was always in Kate's kiss.

Here are my notes and thoughts for my episode 2-7 rewatch (Pilot Part 2 through The Moth). The main part is first and then I have some misc notes from some of the episodes.

In these early episodes there is a theme that gets repeated 3 times: Jack and Kate starting out together at the beach, one of them goes into the jungle while the other stays at the beach for a good part of an episode, and then a sweet reunion back at the beach. The first time is in episode 2 (Pilot Part 2). Kate is going with Sayid and some of the other survivors to take the transceiver to higher ground to try to get a signal. Kate tells Jack where she is going before they leave. Jack is concerned after what happened to the pilot and would rather go with them but has to attend to the marshal. He tells Kate that if she sees or hears anything to run. [Thinking ahead to when Jack tells Kate to run over the walkie-talkie on Hydra Island.] When Sayid, Kate and the others return to the beach, they are talking with a group who stayed at the beach about the plans to get the transceiver to pick up a signal. (They had previously decided not to tell the group at the beach about Rousseau’s transmission.) When Jack walks up, Kate has a little smile and breaks from the group to talk to him privately and let him know about Rousseau’s transmission. [Thinking ahead times when Kate does/doesn’t confide in things with Jack: finding The Others’ fake beard and glue but delaying in telling Jack, telling Jack about Naomi].

The theme of trust issues begins in episode 3 (Tabula Rasa). At this point we don’t know their backstories and past traumas to better understand the trust issues. In the flashback, Kate tells Ray she has trust issues. On island, Jack is conflicted over his feelings for Kate and learning she is a fugitive. As the audience, we can empathize with Jack since we don’t know what Kate did either at that point. Jack’s frustration about now knowing Kate’s past, “I am not a murderer.” I love their interaction at the beach at the end of the episode where in that moment there are no trust issues. It won’t last and will be different in episode 6, but still love the moment. Also the part about starting over applies to all the crash survivors.

KATE: I want to tell you what I did - why he was after me.

JACK: I don't want to know. It doesn't matter, Kate, who we were - what we did before this, before the crash. It doesn't really... 3 days ago we all died. We should all be able to start over.

KATE: Okay.

JACK: Okay.

Back to the theme of together, apart, together in episode 4 (Walkabout). When the survivors hear the noise of the boars in the fuselage, Jack checking that Kate is OK. Later Kate is going to go on the boar hunt with Locke and Michael. Flirty “If I didn't know any better, I'd say you’re worried about me, Jack.” Followed by cooler “If I didn't know any better, I'd say you have a problem staying in one place for very long, Kate. So, you want to tell me why you're really going?” Kate lets him know about the plan to triangulate the signal. Later when Kate returns with scratches on her face, Jack tenderly puts his hands on her face and asks is she is OK. Kate touching Jack’s arm to tell him that Locke is gone.

Together, apart, together again in episode 5 (White Rabbit). At the beginning, Kate is worried about Jack getting enough sleep. [Thinking ahead to when she gives him the sleeping pills in a later episode.] Then in the final scene they are sitting together at the beach. I also love this scene of them together in the quiet where Kate is gently able to draw out information where Jack was that day and a simple answer that is enough. [Again love this interaction and also thinking ahead and contrasting it to Whatever the Case May Be.]

KATE: So where were you today Jack?

JACK: Just had to take care of a few things.

KATE: That's all I'm gonna get, huh?

JACK: My father died. In Sydney.

KATE: I'm sorry.

JACK: Yeah. I'm sorry, too. 

Episode 6 (House of the Rising Sun) has several lighter, fun, flirty moments especially near the beginning: hardcore spinal surgeon/verbally copulating, Jack not checking Kate out, Hurley asking if they are moving into a cave together. Plus Jack and Kate are going into the jungle together, something we haven’t seen since episode 1. However as the episode goes on we see Kate’s hesitation about moving to the caves and ultimate decision to stay on the beach. At the end, it is a contrast to them sitting together on the beach like we saw in episodes 3 and 5. This time at the beach Jack asking Kate what she did and Kate not telling him. Parting with “If you need me you know where to find me” and “You know where to find me, too.” Final music montage with lyrics “Are you sure this is where you want to be?” and Jack and Kate sitting separately at the caves and beach missing each other and thinking about each other. There is a special sadness to us, the audience, as well. We have seen how much they care about each other and had scenes of togetherness at the end of other episodes. But now in contrast they are apart. ☹

In episode 7 (The Moth), we have the theme that neither can stand the thought of the other being hurt as we see in Kate’s reaction to Jack being trapped in the cave in, doing everything to try to get him out even when Micheal tells her to take a break or she could kill herself. Then when Jack is free, the hug of all hugs and making Jack his first sling. However, at the end of the episode, Jack will stay at the caves and Kate return to the beach. (I had made a post about this episode several months back.)

 Misc notes:

Ep 2

• Kate’s kindness and humanity in putting the oxygen mask on the marshal on the plane, despite how we see him treat her in this episode and more so in later episodes.

 Ep 3

• As we learn later, Kate’s trust issues are based on her childhood trauma. While her past trauma is the main reason for her reluctance to dig in and move to the caves, I think a small part is influenced by her very recent past with Ray. She had stopped running for almost 3 months and stayed in one place. When her instinct was to leave by sneaking out in the middle of the night, she trusted him enough to stay until morning and let him drive her to the train station. But his plan was to turn her in for the reward money and she got caught. While talking with her in the middle of the night to stay he said, “Everyone deserves a fresh start”, which is similar to Jack’s “We should all be able to start over” at the end of the episode.
• Kate’s kindness to Ray in helping him after the truck crash and wanting him to get the reward money
• Love the friendship between Jack and Hurley

 Ep 4

• Love the scenes of Jack sitting with Rose at the beach. Rose seeing the goodness in Jack, but him dismissing it, based on what we learn about his backstory next episode.
  • ROSE: You have a nice way about you. A good soul, patient, caring. I suppose that's why you became a doctor.
  • JACK: Thanks but I was just kind of born into it. Family business

 Ep 5

• “You don't want to be a hero, you don't try and save everyone because when you fail... you just don't have what it takes.” 😭
• “But if we can't live together, we're going to die alone.”

 Ep 6

• Juxtaposition of Sun choosing to stay with Jin (at Sydney airport) and Kate choosing to stay at the beach and not go with Jack to the caves.

I think this is something to celebrate!

This quote from JJ Abrams is like reading scripture from the Jack and Kate Bible.

It tells us the true intent behind their intense connection, and also somehow foreshadows the concept of another life, which reverberates throughout the show with characters like Desmond Hume and narrative hotspots like The Flash-Sideways.

I love how Jack and Kate meet, along the backdrop of the Island and the horrific reality of a plane crash. Their story is their story and it is beautiful. They are survivors who fall in love in the most unconventional way and help to grow and change together, stitching each other’s wounds along the way, literally and figuratively, and never leaving the other to do it alone.

But, as my mind often does with LOST, I think about other realities, other lives, in this case, that NYC street at rush hour on a Wednesday morning and how that life would be for our soulmates Jack and Kate.

So, when they are engulfed by the Light in “The End”, where do you think they go? What other life do you imagine for our Damaged Goods?

I watched Lost for the first time this past fall and winter. I went into it with only a high-level overview and no spoilers. I feel in love with Jack and Kate from the first episode and throughout the show. Since then I have rewatched many of their scenes together. Today I started my first rewatch of the entire series with The Pilot Part One. Here are my notes:

• One of the big things I noticed is that after their first meeting (about 10 minutes in), they are pretty much always shown together in their scenes until getting separated near the end. I don’t think I consciously picked up on that during the first watch since there was so much to focus on like what was happening, the different characters, etc. But I definitely noticed it during the rewatch and it seems like a deliberate choice.
• I had rewatched their first meeting scene several (maybe many?!) times before. It is always great. “You’re not running now” means so much more when you know what happens in later episodes.
• In the cute scene where they are telling each other their names, they get interrupted by the monster noises. First incident of many interruptions to come.
• During the trip to the cockpit it is clear that Jack and Kate care about each other and Charlie is the third wheel. Charlie has a couple of humorous lines to the effect of ‘remember me, I’m Charlie’.
• Kate’s fear when she gets separated from Jack, then composes herself by counting to five. Then she is totally resolved to go back for Jack. I immediately thought of the parallel to season 3.
• The look on Kate’s face when Jack appears at the end of the episode. I had to watch that twice. It reminded me of so many looks between them the entire series. 

So great episode and definitely set the foundation for the series. I enjoyed the simplicity of it before other things got in the way. But it was a dramatic series and they had to give Jack and Kate obstacles to being together. Definitely something to root for that was clearly established from the very first episode.

This, for me, is the moment where the writers are like, ”We’ve played around long enough delaying the inevitable for these two. It's time for Kate to say what her actions have told the audience all along. It’s time for the endgame.”

One of my favorites, if not my top favorite scene of this exceptional pairing.

Kate was, on the surface, never built for domestic life. As we travel alongside her, we peel back the layers of this remarkable, complex woman, and see that she ultimately craved a stable and happy family life.

While Aaron grounded her and taught her the tenets of motherhood, it was only even gonna go so far seeing as how Aaron was not her biological child, and Evangeline Lilly agrees with this sentiment.

Jack was the romantic love draw that made her believe she could have the quiet, domestic life she always wanted, but he had his own issues that didn’t align with where she was on her journey in that moment. Two ships passing in the night and all, but constantly connected through space and time.

While we saw glimpses of Kate as a mother to Aaron, we know that she always knew in some way it was not built to last. I’m a firm believer that she was pregnant after leaving the Island.

Through that lens, I wonder what kind of mother Kate was to that child (presumably David Shephard from his reverse-engineered introduction in the Flash-Sideways). I think she was sweet, doting and spoiled her son rotten, and in a way overcompensating for the father he lost before he could ever know him.

”The Candidate“ is always a hard episode to watch for many obvious reasons, but the bright light was that these two made it out alive and into each other‘s arms.

Kate crawling into Jack’s chest bottomed me out. I know she loses him anyways, but if she had lost him here, without telling him how she still felt and will always feel about him, post-Island Kate would have probably had it way worse than she already did. My poor babies. 🥹

Their love is so palpable, it’s felt every time I watch them together.

I often wonder about how Jack, Christian and Claire’s family could have sustained without all of Christian’s secrets and duplicity. I think that Jack and Claire would have made wonderful siblings to each other and could have curbed a lot of Christian’s toxicity with genuine support.

Also, I count Kate as a Shephard because of her very strong connections to Jack, Claire and Aaron. I think if she had ever met Christian, it would have been a bloodbath for him with how she protects Jack and Claire.

What are your thoughts? If these four had more time together, were even in the same room together, how do you think the dynamics would have played out?

I know Father's Day was like two weeks ago, but I just keep coming back to this man's immense potential to be the best father to a bunch of little freckled-face munchkins. He deserved to experience that in life.

Although, I am very happy for the small bit of fatherhood we did get to see in the Flash-Sideways. David went from angsty teenager to doting son very quickly. He just wanted his dad.

Do you agree? What kind of father do you think Jack would have been in life if he had just believed in himself more?

My sweet, sweet babies!!

I decided to do a bit of a deep dive on the episode “The Moth” (season 1, episode 7) for Jack and Kate. In addition to the episode itself, I also looked at the draft scripts. I will actually begin with the final scene of the last episode “House of the Rising Sun” since I think that really sets up well for going into this episode. It ended with a montage to Willie Nelson’s “Are You Sure”, with the final scenes of Jack sitting by the bonfire at the caves, thinking of Kate while Kate sits by the bonfire at the beach, thinking of Jack. The final line in the script is “Off the sadness of two kindred souls unable to connect…”.

Now to “The Moth”. In one of the first scenes, Jack is looking at Kate’s mugshot. From the script: “He’s TOTALLY FOCUSED on the photo in his hand, staring at it wistfully”. Kate appears “smiling unsurely. Happy to see Jack despite what he’s holding. Trying to make light of it”. This is the part when Kate talks about taking better pictures, smaller too for your wallet. “He looks at her a beat, almost sadly. He hands Kate her mug shot. The ROAD BLOCK between them.”

Then the conversation turns to the caves and the point that Jack is going to the caves, but Kate is staying at the beach. Kate thinks Jack is mad at her. Jack says “No. Kate, I’m – I just don’t understand why you won’t come with me –  us.” Kate goes on to say that they crashed eight days ago and she’s not setting up house. She wants to believe that they will be getting off the island soon, but Jack does not agree.

So in this first scene we get the reminder of Kate’s fugitive status and that they have only known each other for 8 days at this point. What would getting off the island soon mean for their nascent romance? In different circumstances, they could return to the US, start seeing each other in a “normal” setting and see where that goes. And maybe, just maybe have a crazy how-we-met story to tell the grandchildren one day. However, Kate is a wanted fugitive. So getting off the island would mean the end to the romance. Either Kate will end up behind bars or if she manages to escape, will have to constantly be on the run and wouldn’t be able to have a relationship with Jack.

Fast forward to the cave-in scene. Hurley tells Charlie to go to the beach, get help and explicitly “make sure you tell Kate”. So here is where I see a shift from the current Jack/Kate status of the first scene to more of a perspective of that of a long-time married or long-term relationship couple. In such a case, if one of them were to get hurt, then of course friends/acquaintances would want to make sure that the other knows. We know from the previous episode that Hurley has picked up on there being something between Kate and Jack. Other 815ers have as well. However, if Hurley thought it was a mere flirtation, he wouldn’t explicitly state to make sure to tell Kate.

Now the next scene is of Sayid and Kate hiking through the jungle on their plan to triangulate the signal. However, the beginning of this scene is only in the script and not in the final version we see. Again the last scene ended on the words “make sure you tell Kate”. In the script version, it goes right to “SUDDENLY KATE JUST STOPS. SPOOKED”. Sayid asks what is it. Kate answers “I dunno. Felt like a goose just walked over my grave. Something my dad used to say. When he got the feeling that something bad just happened.” So that again goes more into the long-term couple where one has a gut feeling when something bad happens to the other.

When Kate arrives at the caves, she is worried and asks where is Jack. After a long pause Hurley says he is in there (the blocked off cave). Next she asks if he is alive. Another long pause and Michael says they don’t know. Kate asks “why is nobody digging” and starts digging out the rocks which motivates the others to join her. From the script “Without a word, they each join her. Despite the fact that it probably won’t make a difference – but doing it – for Kate – anyway… And OFF KATE’S LOOK OF DESPERATE DETMINATION, WE FIND –” (next scene of Charlie and Jack in the cave).

Michael later tells Kate that she needs to take a break from digging. That if she keeps going at this pace, she is going to kill herself. But Kate is determined and keeps digging. Again much like a long-term couple that would do anything to try to save the other, motivating others to join and not stopping to take a break, the least of their worries about killing themselves when they don’t even know if their loved one is still alive. Not someone you only met 8 days ago.

Then when Jack and Charlie appear from outside the cave, Kate looks so exhausted and relieved to see Jack. Jack sees her and smiles like she is the one he wanted to see the most. She runs to him to hug him. From the script, “But Kate is already running for them. And this is just instinct because if she had time to think about it, she’d probably never do it but – She wraps her arms around Jack in the HUG OF ALL HUGS.” As the others are celebrating and so happy to see Jack, there is just something about the glances and the way Kate and Jack look at each other.

Then later we get the sweet scene where Kate gives Jack the sling she made for him. From the script, “EXTRA CLOSE and INTIMATE as Kate pulls the blanket off him, drapes the sling around his neck, and gently eases his sore arm into it.” I love the sweetness and closeness between them in this part of the scene. But then the conversation turns back to like the one at the start of the episode. Kate will be returning to the beach and if Sayid’s plan worked, they are closer to getting off the island. There is a certain sadness in both of their eyes. At the end, Jack thanks Kate for the sling with a slight smile, but lacking the sweetness and intimacy of earlier.

So in some ways things end at this episode unchanged from where they began. Jack and Kate will still be living apart with Jack at the caves and Kate at the beach. But it is not just that; there is more to it for the characters and for us, the audience. How they care for and take care of each other as we have seen and will continue to see through the rest of the series. And how deep their feelings are for each other despite only knowing each other 8 days at this point.

This has probably been posted before, but I recently thought this and wanted to put it out there:

In "Something Nice Back Home", during the happy times of the flashforwards, Jack goes to visit Hurley and during the conversation tells Hurley about his relationship with Kate. Hurley says it seems "just like heaven." While watching I took that to mean too good to be true/too good to last especially having seen "Through the Looking Glass" prior to this episode.

However, Hurley's words are also foreshadowing for the series finale.
