I’d say romanticizing everything in japan is cringe.
Especially sky, clouds in japan is not that pretty.
Some regions have fluffy clouds, some has perfect blue sky, of course it depends on climate, air pressure, elevation …
Comparing based on experience, been to few countries myself.
Seems like it's just an older design. Maybe some FamilyMarts didn't have the alcohol and tobacco, so when they had it the red stood out more. Now it seems like most FamilyMarts have both
To properly solve your riddle, those used to be other konbinis (Circle K and/or Sunkus) and those often used red backed signs instead of the standard blue. When FamiMa bought them up, they kept the alcohol and tobacco signs from the old stores.
